Is it worth buying Dayz standalone yet? [With Developer responses]

I'm blown away that we are entering 2015 and we still have people on here claiming everything is hunky dory with standalone. I have a feeling most of the people white knighting Standalone are kids that didn't actually have to earn the money for the game. I'm not saying 30-40$ is a lot of money, but what's disappointing is that when someone says "I play DayZ It's awesome" 99% of the time what you are seeing and hearing about is Mod content... But the way steam and the community is in general, you see "DayZ 30$" and you buy it not knowing the huge differences between SA and the mods...

Basically what I want to say is that if you haven't seen Arma 3 DayZ mod gameplay, you should check it out. My biggest gripe is that I spent 30$ on a game that will never leave Alpha, when a already more complete and better supported game exists in the form of Arma 3 Mods and the Dayz mod in general.

It should really make a lot of people who blindly support SA, upset when they see coders building a game faster (and for free) than Rocket and BI can with 80 million dollars.... Maybe he should hire the coders who not just ported but greatly improved the original DayZ mod to Arma 3, and they can actually meet at least one of their deadlines.

Q4 2015???!!? The fact that you are happy with a Q4 2015 deadline for Beta shows that you have already committed to going down with this ever fast sinking ship. And the fact that you think they would even pull off a Q4 2015 deadline being this far behind is also a big sign of just how delusional some of you are.

We have seen games get completely made, go through alpha, beta and are now not popular anymore in the time it has taken Rocket to put Buggy vehicles ported from the mod into SA..

I guess I did come to SA fanboy central, so these comments are pretty much on par.

I love Dayz, the concept is great. I just want people to know that there are better games out there in the form of the arma 2/3 mods... And especially the Arma 3 Dayz mod which surpasses standalone being the most similar... I want people to take that 30$ they would spend on SA and buy Arma instead... Mostly just research any YouTuber, gamer that has extensive experience with arma/dayz etc... Let's just say they are not playing SA...

I never played the mod. I just watched all of frankies videos and bought the standalone as soon as it was out. I have close to 1000 hours of ingame playtime already. 30 bucks? I would gladly have paid double that.

Frankie doesn't play Standalone in 99% of his videos... And when he did he trashed the game pretty badly. Saying that he wouldn't be replacing Arma anytime soon and after he made an extremely short series out of literally one gaming session, he never returned to Stand Alone... That should tell you something.

Look at Rhino Crunch, Devil Dog Gamer... These guys are The authorities on DayZ and play all different styles, yet these youtubers all have only played brief instances of Standalone, each had their own reasons for returning to the mod after very brief SA exposure... Yet it's always the same...

Sure you can say that you got 30$ out of the game, I'm not arguing that.. People bought dream casts and Duke nukem forever, and they probably got many hours of entertainment from them.. But there were surely far better ways they could have invested their money (like buying Arma, where you get a FULL BLOWN game... PLUS hundreds of successful Mods)

I swear the credo here should be,

"Hi, I've never played Arma, or Dayz mod... I like to watch you-tubers play those games though, and instead of buying Arma and supporting the mods, I bought StandAlone because I thought there wasn't a difference on the steam store... Sure it only cost my parents 30$... But Because I've endured hundreds of hours playing, over years of missed deadlines and failed updates... I feel obligated to stand by my mistake and tell myself that it's ok... Everything is going to be ok... I mean it's alpha.. And as soon as it gets to Beta, you can bet things will be better... It's ok... It's alpha... Early alpha........"

I would say that DayZ Stand Alone is the Duke Nukem Forever of our decade... But I have a feeling that the difference between the two is that Duke Nukem made it out of Alpha....

There's probably a large portion of this forum that stands by their investment in SA, who's Dad's did exactly the same thing on DNF forums back in 1997... #familytraditions

I would say that DayZ Stand Alone is the Duke Nukem Forever of our decade... But I have a feeling that the difference between the two is that Duke Nukem made it out of Alpha....

That comparison is so mind-bendingly inane... Progress on DayZ is constant, with major updates happening every few weeks. DNF was announced, hyped and then not heard from again for eight years, then briefly popped up before disappearing for another couple years. There were almost 15 years between the announcement and the release of the final product.

 

And good things do come out of development hell. Team Fortress 2 was in development for 8 years. Pikmin 3 took around six or seven. And both games were well worth the wait. I'd much rather wait another 5 years for an epic game, then wait one year for a shitty, rushed project. Kind of like AC:Unity.

No, I feel bad for buying dayz and wasting 23 euro (My feeling for now)

Cause there are just some fundamental issues with the game that are almost impossible to fix.

Now that Rocket left Bohemia, that really was the cherry on top of the cake...

It is true they keep adding stuff, but they haven't fixed many key fundamental problems. I think having a player base at this point in development hurt them instead of helped.

DayZ mod few months after release was still in alpha state, yet it was more complete, more advanced and less buggy than SA after 2 years of developement.

Oh I forgot to mention, it was (and still is) free.

 I always felt that outside of the initial concept Rocket hampered development more than helped. Great idea man but it was obvious his ability to lead a project was lacking. As far as impossible to fix issues what are these issues you speak of? And why are they impossible to fix?

Kind of amazed me the reply rocket gave to the OP, nope dont buy it. Just wait. Not even close to being worth playing yet. Of cource that was a while ago...But still really only a month or so after he posted that I started playing this game.

 

Thats worse then what I would say by far and I can be pretty cridical about dayz sometimes....but kind of in a loving way lol

 

But really unless your a arma ofp, die hard, and the unforgiving combat those games gave. Along with the harsh survival, perma death, and servers filled with dick heads just waiting for the chance to screw you over in many different forms....this might not be the game for you........not to mention all the bugs and growing pains you will go through with this early release. I would advise only playing if it is something that really interests you.

Game awesome thoiugh love watching and being apart of its growth but yeah as one guys stated above if your not into the hardcore survival game with losts of perma deaths and bugs and alot of traveling this game isnt for you stay away im so sick of the damn kids who play and bitch because the game map is big and immersive and you have to travel all over.Some people need to srick with ther lobby based shooters/.

I've seen one in the last six months, I played two days on the SA and encountered more Hackers Cheaters than actual players.

Yeah Imonna call pure BS on that. I guess anyone who kills you is cheating. I've met my first cheater after 300 hrs of gameplay on SA and even than i left with a small possibility it was just desync.

 

Arma2 & addons? Seriously? I stopped playing Arma2&addons MP altogether after getting tired of login into servers, just to find myself flying with a rocket launcher nuking entire server & getting banned.But hey, i loved every second in mission editor so all good.

This was going on years ago, i dont even want to know how it is now when the game costs like 3 bucks.

Keep playing your cheatless mod lol.

I bought many games over the years that I didn't like but this game I finally threw my hands in air and gave up on. This game is by far one the most poorly designed games. Here just a list of problems I have had. The loot in this game is the biggest issue you. There times when I have no problem find loot and other times where there is absolutely nothing. What's worse is you can't sneak around zombies and finding weapons at times is damn near impossible. Then don't get me started on the Please wait loading screen. 

 

Let me just say this if your think about buying this game don't. Get DayZ Mod because DayZ Standalone is not worth buying.

 

To the devlopers you guys should be patching this game almost daily if not once a week. Your taking money from costumers and giving them a piss poor game in return. I realize this is work in progress but you actually have to show you are making some sort of progress. Thus far I have seen no progress in the month that I been playing.

Your concerns are valid (except I disagree on the no-progress issue) and I can of course understand that the current state of the game might not be exactly what you expected. However, all the issues mentioned are known issues which will be addressed during development. If you feel that you should take a break until the problems are solved, that is fully understandable and up until now, we are of course grateful for the feedback you have provided us!

 

You can always follow the weekly status reports and changelogs and see when it becomes interesting for you to join in again. Also, on that note, along with all future status reports/changelogs, all the old reports/logs documenting the progress the team has achieved is available here:

Early Access is an opportunity for consumers to gain access to development builds as the title is created.
 
DayZ has been in development a little over a year now. We chose to give users the option to participate in the development significantly earlier than most any developer would ever allow. 
 
This does not mean the development magically speeds up, nor does it make the standard development cycle of 3 years for a project this size seem "too long".
 
I'm sorry you are finding your experience frustrating, but this is exactly what we have communicated to prospective Early Access users. This is not abnormal for this phase of a projects development. We just gave you the option, the choice - to gain access far earlier than you would have ever been allowed, prior to Early Access.

 

As I've mentioned prior, software development standard practices include a "bug bar" - As you progress with the core development of your base features many bugs will show up. Triage decides if the bugs are above the bug bar, only those that are get addressed to ensure the title launches and functions at a base level. 
 
Developing a title by following the suggested method of essentially "mastering" a build each time you go to do an update would drastically increase development time, and the time in between updates to stable branch. (In the case of the overall project, by years - in the case of stable updates, by additional months between updates)
 
While some issues do infact go above the bug bar (in the case of infected AI behavior), the work required to replace, redo, or re-engineer them takes extensive work and time - and cannot be "incrementally merged in". So just because the work has not completed and ended up on stable branch, does not mean it is not a priority one focus of the engine and gameplay programming teams.

Edit: Additionally - DayZ is updated (stable branch) on a monthly cadence. Experimental branch, weekly.

Absolutely.  There are two games I can safely say I've gotten my money's worth tenfold.  Minecraft and DayZ SA.  If you can deal with the random bugs and script-kiddies and realize this game is a work-in-progress, it's the best money you'll ever spend on a game.  I've played nearly 1000 hours now and there has never been a certain instance that made me think the game wasn't worth it.  I've died randomly from glitches, had my character wiped and had my gear stolen by some kid who bought some "l33t hax" with his mom's credit card.  I still get on almost nightly and meet up with my friends and patrol the land of Chernarus.

Just so you know, the month you have owned the game also includes the dev team's two week Christmas holiday. :)

You get dropped onto the shore or somewhat inland. Spend countless hours dodging other players, being chased for nothing, dying because of rain, and finally outrunning walkers. I personally have spent over 100+ hours playing and complaining about the way DAYZ has been . Yes, i realize that the game is in ALPHA and by no means am I saying Im not loving the game so far. It has its glitches and so forth but hey... whats not to love about spending hours stalking someone to watch them pick up a mosin scope and planning your attack.

The real reason im writing this isn't to say how much i hate hackers and I wish it would stop raining or there isn't enough loot. I want to know where the game is going, I've read the mission statement showing what the goals are for each quarter this year. Honestly is scares me, I also play Arma 3 and I find myself just getting p.o.'d at the server list and every-time i click on a server it disconnects me, kicks me, or i get in and the server lag so horrible I starting doubting my computer systems ability to hand Arma. Now i know Dayz "isnt Arma 3" but with the talk about being able to customize the game I see this turning into the same issue. Shoot the only way i'm even enjoying Arma is Battle Royale. I would hate to see Dayz get like this, the game is going to push machines to there limit once the game is optimized, but I dont want to have to download a bunch of crazy non-scene mods.

I wanted to experience Dayz from the mod it spawned from. I download DayZ mod for Arma 2 and jumped in, made one noise and im being chased my at least 15-20 walkers. Yes i get this is suppose to be a “zombie survival game” but is it going to get this crazy? Walking into a town and cant really do anything but worry about zombies? I think there needs to be a happy medium for this, even on the website for the mod it says average survival is 1.5 hrs that is way to short… I want to try to keep a toon for a couple days and explore not just run from Elektro to Balota and hope i dont get 100+ walkers running for me or God forbid another toon sees me and kills me. Can we expect a good balance in this area and not just throwing in a bunch of walkers because the game engine can handle it. I know there is plan for more things in the game and more walkers but how crazy are things going to get. I would hate to spend the time enjoying the game now to end up hating it in the end because there is just TOO MUCH going on.

Honestly, without trolling, trying to be a dick, or trying to point fingers at any particular issue plaguing this game that currently shatters it from its very foundation, no.
