Mod zombies vs SA zombies

in-dev or no, improve eventually or no, the SA zombies will NEVER be scary. In fact, vanilla DayZ will NEVER be scary. It's a game designed, partially or maybe primarily to market guns for gun manufacturers (I have some proof/evidence of this, not just pulling it out of my ass - the DayZ dev team have to liaise with the arms manufacturers as part of their job description. Although maybe this is just because they don't want their guns badly represented, but I've never heard of that being a thing before in games ).

 

hence why I'm going to hold out for a mod.

Fair enough. I wasn't quite aware of the intricacies of making weapons in games. While all along the very initial draw of the game way way back was - survival + zombies. And now I'd say survival has been reduced to topping up on beans and water (yes there's a ton of other stuff but it almost never comes into play) and zombies - yes, they're STILL IN DEVELOPMENT - but so are the weapons and how much attention has been spent on each proportionately. I'd say WAY more attention has been given to clothes than zombies.

That's just how game development works, unfortunately.

 

The art team are constantly working on new clothing models and so on, then once they're done actually coding them into the game and having them spawn is a small task, so you'll notice that they keep coming in a steady stream.

 

AI (zombies) is a much more strenuous task. It can take a very long time to make even the smallest improvements. Programming AI is one of the most difficult tasks in game development and very few people are qualified to do it. It's not like they can call the art team in to help because we have enough clothing and so on for the time being, as nice as that would be.

Well to be honest I think Dayz needs the Blood Suckers for that bit of intelligent variety ppl want without making the infected in general to smart. The Blood Suckers have there own mutation going on allowing them to be much much smarter. They have an inbuilt predator stealth tech as well due to the nature of there mutation.

 

Are you proposing that the devs steal the bloodsucker outright, or that they produce a monster that is closely resembling but legally distinct from the bloodsucker? I think I'd rather wait for a STALKER mod.

Good job not pulling anything out of your arse there, champ.

 

Mod zombies are scarier but I guess standalone zombies are more realistic... as far as realism can go when it comes to zombies. Besides, as had already been stated the 'zombies' in DayZ are infected people, not the undead.

Probably something similar but different at best. I think ideas for mutated infected in the future shouldn't be wiped from the board completely. There is allot of potential with mutations. Even if its not a super noticeable physical trait at best.

 

Iv been hearing Namlask is being worked on once modding becomes a thing. Ether way some updated Blood Sucker graphics would be super killer.

They're making a game about realistic shooting (partly) so of course they're liaising with the manufacturers. You need a tinfoil hat buddy ;)

(And their spawn animation is much cooler. Instead of just plopping out of nothing, they crawl out of the ground - may not be 'realistic' - but it's really great).

Why zombies can't use axes or crowbars, even wood planks and shit? It would be fun in my opinion, would add to the challenge. This + better melee mechanics would make the game quite fun as I see it, also open possibilities for zombies to break in locked places, if they have the right tool for the job.

 

I mean, these dumbass zombies are not really fun tbh. Why can't they be smart enough to use melee weapons?

The Z actually doesn't stand for zombie. It stands for zero, making the name of the game Day Zero (i.e. the first day of your survival).

Knock wood they accomplish this as they are markedly more clunky then they were in the mod, the SA zombies run through far more map objects than any mod zombie

 

And here I though the Z stood for zombies.

I know you know better than that.  The Z in DayZ has never stood for Zombie.

 

Mod zombies were a joke.  Anyone with 50 hours logged could walk through a horde and laugh while gunning down someone and then duck into a tree or through one of the few buildings available to lose them.   Come on now Baker, I know you know I know you know I know.

No, most certainly not. This would be game breaking for me if they add this to the vanilla game. Let modders do these things. There is no thing which can turn humans in these super creatures. They shouldn't be even in the games or movies unless they didn't come from an human.

 

I agree, it doesn't fit DayZ but I fully expect a mod inspired by Z Nation to pop up with all the silly zombie variants.  That show does a good job of boiling down the zombie genre into their silly hack of a show.

They are ok, demons i cant stand.

 

Its pretty much the same over and over because they dont have the team to make it better.

 

but they also go through the walls too in arma 3, exile, ryan zombies....

The "zombies" in DayZ Standalone aren't f*cking zombies. How many times do we need to say it? Zombies crawl out the ground, infected people don't!

And the day a mod based on this game does a better job than the vanilla version of this game i loose faith in its development in general.

Yes - well, mods are only based on all the heavy work that a dev team has put in, starting from the engine ground up.; so one or two flashes of genius + 'some' work can make something good

But any mod in fact appeals to a minority - if a mod appeals to ALL 100% of the original vanila buyers more than the vanilla game, then probably on that day the whole industry should shoot itself in the head.

True and the whole argument about what a zombie SHOULD and SHOULDN'T be is just fucking stupid. Its just ppl set in there ways with how something is presented.

Yes its kind of interesting how "zombies" turned up in culture over the last 10 years or so - now they are everywhere and everyone kind of thinks they know "what they are"

All ya need is a bunch of extras with messy face makeup and torn clothes and you say "act like zombies" and they all do their own thing

I like watching the zombie crowd extras in about 100 (zillion)  movies - to see who thinks ya have to claw your arms around, who thinks you're supposed to shuffle/stagger, who thinks its more kinda howling and staring at the sky... lotsa fun.. where did that all come from ??

 

like bloody orcs.. ONE writer invents them, and suddenly they ALL OVER the damn place.. just cant get away from Orcs.. they show up everywhere ya look.. big and little orcs, dumb orcs, intelligent orcs, invisible orcs, giant-armor-plated fraggin' orcs, half-breed orcs, friendly orcs, medieval magician orcs, space orcs..

 

Pingu is real though, I hope we ARE clear about that..

There are quite a few movies and other media where zombies DO NOT crawl out of the ground at all.

 

This. 

 

28 Days Later.  The Crazies.  The Omega Man / I Am Legend.  Maggie.  Even the zombies in World War Z technically. These are still technically "zombie" films.  Yes, they are living humans infected by some sort of "rage virus", not undead corpses like the Romero films or The Walking Dead.  But these are still "zombie films" for the following reasons:

 

The "zombies" mindlessly attack "normals".

The "zombification" process is permanent and untreatable.

In most cases, getting bit by a zombie turns you into one.

 

So I would submit that at the very least, the "zombies" in DayZ should have the following appearance:

They should look like sick people (pale or discolored, bloodshot eyes, maybe puss or ooze from various openings)

They should look like they have been walking around in the rain and mud for weeks.

They might even look like they were attacked or have been attacking something else.

 

Whether they have glowing eyes or varicose veins is purely up to the art team.

 

Whether they are "fast" or "slow" is up for debate IMHO.  Personally I like the "slowing rising tide of undead" like the Romero films and Walking Dead.  It adds a sort of different tension.  Then again, the kinetic frenzy of "fast" zombie films like World War Z, the Dawn of the Dead remake and 28 Days later adds a different, but also cool dynamic.

 

They SHOULD NOT have an assortment of mutants and other zombie creatures like the Resident Evil films.

Have you seen the Day Z Standalone "zombies" up close? They look ..... pretty sick. They have blood leaking from their facial orifices, look disheveled, and are pale and covered in dirt. They aren't fresh and in their Sunday Best.

They look much much fresher than one should look after being outside and in the wild for days and days.

 

You think at the very least a couple would loose there shirts or worse being they act like animals now without any human intelligence.

Even though mod zombies were glitched as fuck, I still enjoyed their big number.

 

I would like to have a big horde of glitchy zombies that are a big threat rather than none. I know we will have more zombies once theyre fully fixed but while the devs are working on the zombies I would like to  still have the glitchy zombies in large amounts rather than no zombies at all.

 

Also would like to see something like this someday...
