December Round-up: ༼ つ ◕_◕ ༽つ GIVE SA

Recommended Posts

Surely everyone is impressed with the outskirts of Cherno?

That area is overwhelming.

I'm re-watching that part on top of the 12 story building over and over, it brings tears to my eyes.

Sadly my fps will be in the 0.x range :P

EDIT: Does anyone have a clue what kind of machines the Dev's, in this case Rocket, have?

I'll assume they did lots of optimizing compared to the mod, where such scenery would bring down any machine :(

I don't know, however this is my only worry.

Well I have to say the stream was positively mindblowing. Highrise appartments look fantastic, and Cherno has many more enterables! It also looks gorgeous, bugs and all.

Whilst whaching the stream, I had a sense of the potential of this game. It can go so far beyond the mod, expand concepts and features, make it a real apocalypse simulator. Seriously nothing with the scope of DayZ I don't think has been attempted before. It's going to be a unique game.

FPS is what worried me, it looks great in stills but there was some very evident slideshow stuttering in the stream and Dean had said earlier that the settings/resolution he was using was fairly low. Still, I don't believe they have optimized for FPS much as of yet, rocket mentioned something about texture loading optimization, so there is some hope not sure if that's where the bottleneck in cities lies though.

Edit: Yeah you can see the really low frame rate inside the block of flat at around the 2 hour 13 minute mark, rocket then says "It's sucking frames [the furniture]...I mean how many billions of items are now being rendered in this scene? We're going to have to do some serious optimisation." So he did notice and they are going to work on it. :)

Textures are not what worry me.. (i haz ssd + 1866 RAM)

Truth is, I don't even know what brings down fps so much.. I don't think it's textures loading. I'm planning on getting a hexacore from amd now, we'll see how it plays, but looking at that huge city really worries me. Will it be possible to reach 60 fps w/o sli/crossfire? I'm starting to think it'd be better to wait 'till SA releases, then get the new parts/PC. It ain't gonna be cheap, that's for sure :D

Yeah I don't think it's texture loading either, I've also got an SSD and 2GB GDDR5 on my graphics card which has helped my FPS in cities zero. I don't know much about graphics but my guess is that the more polygons in a scene the more shading that has to be calculated and that's the bottleneck?

I've been thinking about upgrading just for DayZ too. I believe rocket has said that CPU Hz is king for the standalone and that the engine was never well optimized for multicore so more cores is far less important, which is typical for older engines, I can't find the quote though. Anyway I'll probably buy a 2500K/3570K/4670K and overclock it if that's the case. It really makes me doubt the could get DayZ to work on consoles if that's true but Dean seems confident, perhaps he means a heavily stripped down version, it would have to be.

First thing : fuck consoles, dammn peasants :P Seriously though, I am really glad that there are still companies like Bohemia that make real (!) PC games. If you look around, you will see so many "PC" games that are just ports from consoles. I definititly don't miss the console kiddies in DayZ / Arma.

Polygon count, polygon count... I see more polygons it a forrest than in a room with a coutch! I've written down my ideas about this below.

Edit: Yeah you can see the really low frame rate inside the block of flat at around the 2 hour 13 minute mark, rocket then says "It's sucking frames [the furniture]...I mean how many billions of items are now being rendered in this scene? Well, having no clue about programming, but I wonder why all the couches and other furniture from another building have to be rendered if you're not even looking at them? Maybe it is because we acctually see all these things but then the wall renderd in our face just "over" draws it? You know what I'm saying?

Maybe they could just set a custum rendering distance of say 100 yards/meters for "select" couches that are only visible when you are in the same room anyways? That should give a fps boost.

Sadly few games utilize more than one core, although arma allegedly uses two cores... Given that the PS4 features a octacore (eight cores) running at 1.6 GHz (the Xbox one has the same cpu running at 1.75 GHz) we can expect massive multithreading optimisation for games ported from consoles. Which is good because hopefully PC games might come with better multithreading support too. We'll see what the future brings.

Unless rocket eases my mind, I will probably really wait untill SA releases and we get an idea of the performance, before I build my new PC.

some overcritical remarks (with "pre-alpha" argument in mind):

  • what i've noticed, and that's just a personal taste, but why are all the buildings (for example the apartment complex in cherno) so run down (same with cars), as if they were abandoned years and years ago, however you find fresh bananas?! this abiding to these, i admit minor, inconsitencies remains really illogical to me. (bananas are just an example here, you could also say "why are buildings run down but nature hasn't claimed back most of the buildings")

  • props of ANY kind would enhance the experience of the apartment complex to a huge extent, although it may be a ridiculous amount of work.

  • spider webs would make a huge difference (also bird nests, bee hives or wasp's nests); much more foliage around and on buildings

  • broken scopes look really nice, however it seems as if you could relatively easy overcome this drawback. i suggest different (maybe random) textures which overlay to get a more effective drawback

  • Cherno apartments may be a huge sniper arena, my biggest fear...

  • i vaguely remember something like: "if no player is around the server will move them (zeds) pretty simple on a straight line" - Good bye Zombie hordes? but better ask Rocket

Run down buildings. You've clearly never been to eastern europe haha. It really doesnt look that much different from the game.

Actually, that provides for zombie hordes. Rather than tracking their intimate moves across a field, if nobody is around, the server can reduce the calculation for distant zombies. So, in theory, it could lessen the load of having zombie hordes.

I loved how he finds the pistol scope (that was an awesome attachment and something I look forward to using in game) then turns the corner and screams at the zombie out of fright xD

Edit: While I'm thinking about it, the number of bugs in the stream was a good wake up call, and gives the impression that it may be a while, (I could be wrong!) before we get to a release. Just saying as a devil advocate. I think it served as a good, indication to a lot of people though who just keep demanding for it's release and demanding to know why it's not out already, well there's your bloody answer.

That melee combat is worse than what we have now....

Pre-alpha and missing full chunks of animation.

You shouldve seen it 3 weeks ago when it had even less of its animations properly configured.

The most recent videos have done a great job to highlight why the release hasn't happened sooner, even for people like me who may see DayZ SA through rose colored glasses.

I'm downloading the clips but twitch archive is a massive FAILure.

I thought they were a well established content provider?

Also: My roommate went on tour with his band and I have a perfectly clear tube of internet at my disposal for more than a week. Now is a good time for that girl to call me to hang out or the SA to drop. Your move universe!

I...I...I can't even comprehend how you think that. Guess what? It's actual melee now. Not a "pistol" with an axe texture. No, it hits were you swing. So, even when you ignore the fact that it has improved animations, I still can't comprehend how you can possibly consider it "worse".

Man Dean is pulling a weekend on work, that's for sure o.o;

What a dedicated guy he is...

Also...what does he mean, make the zombies more threatening....

Dear BioHaze.

As a representative and spokesperson of the Universe, I've been tasked with relaying this message to you:

---------------voxuniversum---------------------------

 1. 'That girl' can't hang out, she is in the DayZ SA testing group.

 2. 'That girl' has met a handsome moustached gentleman in the testing group, and they are eloping to Altis.

 3. DayZ SA will be cancelled by Bohemia, just prior to release, in favour of a garden simulator (not moddable).

Your move BioHaze.

---------------endofmessage---------------------------

Please bear in mind that I am just the messenger.
