The Notorious Can Incident

Recommended Posts

I'd prefer canned Kangaroo if we're going with a theme here.

Not a problem. Wombat too?

Perhaps in how we have to take care of our body temperature, water supplies, food, infections, bones, blood transfusions, day and night cycles... etc

Perhaps also in the fact that weapons don't spit tracer bullets like in BF3, that weapons have more recoil than in COD... I won't run out of examples.

That is not ultra-realism. Not when an entire canteen = one can of soda. When blood transfusions -need- another individual to administer them. When the only bone you break is legs, and you can break them by walking over rocks or bumping into another person. It's a lot more realistic than other games, but far from ultra-realism and there are so many immersion breaking unrealistic things left in it's not even funny. It's good, hell it's great, but not ultra-realistic. Maybe in comparison to other games, but not real world conditions.

Some people are just really annoyed how much disrespect has been given to moderators of the forum. They put a lot of effort into this barrel o' fun called the DayZ Forums and it disappoints me that they aren't getting credit they deserve.

I agree they should get credit by all means, from my point of view, a different approach that was subtle would have been much more appropriate rather than seeing the names every time i pick up a can or drink, as Rocket said however it was a miss-communication and im sure if it had been approached better this whole shit storm could have been avoided.

I'm confused, why is it a disgrace?

I've declared my opinions over and over and I'm somewhat tired of it. the survey will show what the majority thinks and let's stick to that then

Try to play the update and test things by your self before spreading the whine everywhere.

It's something basic. You can't shit on something you don't know.

Edit : everyone who have play the stuff have seen that the names only apperas in the description. Speaking of "raping my immersion" and spreading it without have seen the stuff is very stupid.

I agree that the reaction of many was plain stupid. Also the reaction of some in favor of the new cans was just plain stupid.

You cannot take out the most stupid arguments another group brings up, take them out of context, and say that that's the opinion of everyone and that they are all idiots.

I for myself did not complain about it destroying the game at all. I was pissed tough, that the decision to honor a specific group of people, and the way on how to do it, was made in a very small group, in a very short time, without even seeking the opinion of the larger community.

the biggest shame about the whole incident is, that the (in my opinion) rushed decision to put the new items in this update, combined with the obvious communication-issues, caused all the great things about the upgrade to be overshadowed by childish nonsense. I consider this update to be the biggest step taken so far in improving zombie AI. They have never felt so good to me before. They really zigzag less, they only damage after they hit, they don't do damage when running into them. It makes the whole struggle so much more rewarding, when interpreting the zombies behavior actually allows you to tell what he is up to. Once I found the machete, my hatchet was banished to the toolbelt. I even left a few guns on the loot-spots just because I had so much fun playing with it. Ever seen a ghillie with a machete? that's me!

tl;dr: if you don't want the monkeys to throw with shit, make sure there isn't any around them.

Maybe the term "ultra" is too much. But it's still the most realistic MMOFPS you'll see at this day. And this realism creates an impression of deepness and gives players a unique experience, like the fear of getting killed and loosing hours of scavenging, or like the satisfaction of hunting and getting revenge on a bandit, or when you enter a town with a group of well armed friends.

The feel of being all mighty in a vast and persistent space, based on the real world with actual weapons and equipment reinforce this sensation in my opinion

"Oh, boo-hoo, these names ruin the immersion for me! You'd never see these in real life! QQ boo-hoo!"

Alright then, since cans, not everything else, is the biggest immersion component for you, how about adding:

-Ligo brand squid.

-Giant Bug Chili Pasta

-Roasted Scorpions

-Canned Russian Herring

-Cheeseburger

-Armadillo Meat.

-Creamed Armadillo

-Creamed Possum

-Buzzard Gizzards

-Jellied Eels

And I'll just stop there. All of those things are canned, you can read the rest here: http://foodnetworkhumor.com/2009/06/unusual-canned-foods-from-around-the-world-45-pics/

All those things are real, so people with poles up their asses (Strict joke, for those who don't understand) can still have their 'immersion' knowing that those things exist. Have fun. I'm sure now that you'd rather have Herpy Dooves canned Muffins than a Jellied Eel. Oh well, you guys have fun with your immersion

And now to add insult to injury:

Trees breaking my legs ruins the immersion for me. Remove trees.

Zombies hitting me through walls ruins the immersion. Remove zombies.

Firehouses and ATC Towers holding military loot ruins the immersion. Pleas remove the ability to spawn any guns there.

Being able to fit car parts into my small backpack ruins the immersion for me. Remove that ability, and make it so I have to carry it using both my arms, and that I can only move very slowly.

Being able to fix cars using only a toolbox ruins the immersion. Make it so I have to practice a lot, and find a manual and spend several days reading it before I can actually successfully repair a car.

^^^This is how you 'immersion' guys sound. I'm all for immersion, but you guys act like this game is fucking real life. Things will be a little different, get over it. You want immersion? Play Arma and not DayZ, since zombies won't ever happen. There's your immersion.

-snip-

maybe one problem might be there are too many platforms. To take me as an example. I'm almost never on reddit and certainly not 4chan. So my only info comes from here. So i guess there are more ppl like me. Therefor you get these coexisting communities which somewhat differ in interests and ideas at some point.

So maybe it would make sense to say either here or there:

"Listen guys nice idea but post it there, there you will be most certainly heard" Or at least make comments like. "Listen up, there we have this thread going on, check it out, we look forward to implement some of that suggestions eventually..:"

Problem would be solved. At some point the communities most be "forced" to see/hear each other

I just found the whole "singling a certain group" thing to be very over the top. We should be noted and commented on for our work and input, not what we like or enjoy, that shouldn't be brought into the equation at all and last night upset me alot.

I have read both sides of the story back to front and i still have not slept, i understand that some people were a little sensitive over my idea for canned muffins and i apologize for that, but i actually do really like muffins and i thought it would just add a little more colour, i mean sardines... we can do better!

I don't get the whole broohaha... People do understand there is such a thing as Canned Muffins right?

And who cares what the 'brand name' is. Famous Amos, Chef Boyardee and Bimbo are all crazy sounding names too, but they're real.

Seriously people, we're playing a game about thousands of people turning into zombies that chase you and try to eat you, and yet a few goofy sounding brand names on cans make the game over the edge? Yeesh...

Nice arguments. Very constructive and accurate.

Let's all just chill, I was one of the first to support Joel to try and get his stuff implemented in the mod, but now I can see it might have been a mistake.

I still find his work amazing in term of quality, but I can see how the "easter eggs" part of it may be too much for some people.

Another issue : people might want food that looks less western/american and more "chernarussian" in style.

Anyway, mistakes were made and it should now be time to stop insulting each other.

It more like what Rocket was getting at for me. i think the mod itself is going in the wrong direction. i have talked to players that play on my server and i am not the only one that thinks like this. most of us are just waiting for the SA. its all opinon i know but since 1.7.4.4 the mod took a turn in a direction completely away from what it was when i started playing. i got into it for the realism but now most of the things are just silly adds for humor. again just an opinon.

Horde - have all my beans.

I just find this immensely funny!

He gets a cookie from me.

Argamore gave a cookie to Horde!

Can't believe I missed his post.

And I think this topic is getting out of hand, the trolling and hate and spam and stuff..

I don't know man, weird shit going on here about some cans and names on 'em.

I'm honestly baffled why people (including moderators) are still harping on about cans. Anyone who think the issues were about cans has the mental depth of the shallow end of a kiddies pool.

Basically the concerns (valid or not) regarding the new food and drinks cans raised a valid concern regarding communication between various parties within the DayZ community, i.e. the players, moderators, developers, rocket etc.
