I run slow, is it lag, or something else?

Recommended Posts

When playing with other people, I constantly fall behind.  And yes, I am holding down W and Shift. In just over two minutes of running, I can easily be left back a couple hundred meters.  Is there anyone else who has this problem?  I've tried testing my "naked" running speed with a fully loaded player, but it makes no difference.  Is this related to performance or lag, or  are there some settings that I could have borked that would cause this?

I think, now do bare in mind this is my hypothesis, is that your connection to the server is causing you to become behind? Of course I have no evidence to support that. But again, its a guess.

You're carrying something in your hands and they aren't

Back in the mod days I would always fall behind, because I was getting a constant low fps. Then when I tried a different dayz mod that improved performance, within seconds I thought wow they really increased the run speed, but the person I was playing with who had a better computer said it's the same as usual. Turns out I was just getting a constant good fps instead

Umm are you doing the double click w? Check key commands, w is jog and two hits on w is run fast. I use arrow keys so I had to manually set my arrow keys for double click up arrow.

I actually don't know what w and shift is.

Holding down Shift while holding down W, your character starts to run. Holding down W and letting go of Shift, your character returns to jogging.

I play with emuthreat. My in game name is "mrGreenJeans". My guess is that the problem might be his internet service provider. Or the firewall in his router/modem? I'm not really sure. Just throwing ideas out there.

I have come across other players who "run" slower. Their character is clearly in the running mode, but they fall behind rather quickly, like emu.

I hope you find a solution. Not being able to run as fast as other players can get you killed.

All of the above are possible but it could also be PC performance.

Before I did some recent upgrades and optimized my settings I would often gradually fall behind my friend when we ran.

Now we run at the same rate. No problems.

This happens , too, when you live very far apart.

My mate lives over 14 flight hours away from me, and when his ping to the server is much higher than mine he always falls back behind me.

Strangly, he still doesn't seem to be affected by this in combat situations.

Wow. Thanks for all the ideas.  Sorry if I befuddled some with my two-key sprint setup.  I just went and set my run to 2xW just to check.  What does "Fast Forward" do?  I've been thinking frames is most likely what's responsible, but haven't been able to find anything to confirm it yet.

I do get pretty bad frames usually, anywhere from 8-12 to low 20-30 frame range, despite having tried any and all of the published fixes.  I have a suspicion that AMD processors might be a hindrance at this point. By chance, I have exactly the recommended hardware, with double the stated RAM.  This even happens when my ping is in the 60's, so I've ruled that out.  Turning down the video settings has little effect, aside from making it harder to identify things.  I know it's a dead end trying to squeeze any more frames out of my setup without hardware uppgrades--which shouldn't be necessary, given that I've met or exceeded all recommended hardware specs.  And I have cable broadband that performs consistently at 50 down, 5 up.

If it is framerate causing the slowness, please help me to try and summon up the new renderer faster by dumping roasted pumpkin seeds into the pond at Prud. Every little bit helps.

Hi guys,

I sent emu a pm, as I had a few thoughts of my own, as I recently encountered this very thing, when introducing a friend to pc & bohemia titles. We tested in Dayz & Arma 3, and the issue was always the same. Slow movement.

It actually stems from getting an average of 8-10 fps. When you start to run in the single digits as an average, it impacts the users movements ie; moving slower than everyone else.

Unfortunately for those that cannot tweak their settings further to average a rate of 15-20 fps, will have to wait for further optimisations from the engine.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Emu - to your question about fast forward.

Fast Forward bind allows you to sprint with one key pressed down without needing to hold W as well.

ie; I bind my Fast Forward to my mouse button side, and I only have to click this to sprint

No idea why your frame rate affects your run speed (never heard of that in any game besides arma/dayz) but that's what it is.

I don't think it's hardware related at all. When I play with my wife in the same room, on the same 150mbps connection, with very similar rigs (mine is in my signature, hers is my old 5.2GHz 2600K/32GB RAM/RAID 0 120GB SSDs with a GTX 760), one of us always seems to run faster than the other at any given time. We can be fresh spawns, or fully kitted.

It doesn't matter if we're both healthy with nothing in our hands. As a matter of fact, my wife recently ran FASTER than me with her SKS in her hands while my Mosin was on my back.

If anything, the only reason I'd believe without substantial proof would be packet loss/desync.

It seems like this issue is related to connection. For example, sometimes when playing with my friend who has an old i3, he runs faster than me despite having worse ingame performance.

No idea why your frame rate affects your run speed (never heard of that in any game besides arma/dayz) but that's what it is.

In any other game the position of the player is calculated on real time and speed independently of the fps rates. However with the ArmA engine, your player position is severely client based (this means your client tells the server where you are. Hi hackers! :D) and has the GPU in mind. Which implies, your player position isn't updated (and then send the data to the server) until both the CPU and the GPU have finished their calculations. This means, when you have fps drops, your actually missing some "steps" or "ticks" on the update of your player position. Falling behind the rest.

TL.DR: if, lets say, your character advance is calculated 20 times per second, if you have fps drops with the ArmA engine this means you're missing some of those. Making it to 18 times, or 15 times, or whatever, slowing you down ingame.

P.S: This also used to happens with Saints Row 3. My old pc couldn't handle it and I when playing coop, my friend always had way more speed than I did with the same car (I was playing at 15fps, he was playing at 60fps).

Cant be connection, at least not always, since when this happened to me I had a potato pc (8-20fps playing Day Z Mod, standalone wasn't out yet) but my internet connection was a 100/10mpbs, much better than my friends had at the time.

Then why does it happen to me and the wife? Both have very good computers, same 150/50 connection. Neither of us ever lags as far as frame rate or latency; desync is the only thing we suffer from every now and then.

It still happens to us...

Desync is an unrelated issue. Desync doesnt slow you down, but teleports you back, rollbacks your player position. Result may be the same (you fall behind), but the cause is different. OP isn't talking about desync but about a clearly lowered speed of his character.

Well I'm describing the exact same thing, and mine isn't caused by latency/frame rate issues. At any given time, either myself or my wife moves visibly slower than the other person. As stated before, we can be completely healthy, fully energized and hydrated, and it still happens. We've even switched gear and had the same result.

Just the specs of the package signed up for at your isp does not ensure the best connection to servers. Since my friend is located in Canada and has a lower speed connection, we play on US servers where I will end up having worse ping/bandwidth/desync stats due to sitting in Europe.

Didn't mention that but yeah, I not only had higher bandwith than my friends but also lower ping and better specs overall. We are all from Spain playing on German servers, Im from north spain and some of my friends from south spain, having those considerable higher ping that I do.

Grimey Rick has got to be right - I dont see how framerate can change anything. But if you are loosing packets up to the server, the server may think you've stopped moving (after a few milliseconds of no reception) and then start you moving again when it gets the next packet.

You won't notice this, whatever your framerate, because your own machine keeps on doing what you started doing, until it gets an instruction back from the server to correct your location. If that happens frequently then overall you'll run slower. You don't notice location correction until it gets so big yo start rubberbanding;

I don't know this - but maybe a senile pc with a low framerate might just be so weak that it's slowing down packet send too?

*

for nerds : I tune my system to over-stress the bandwidth even though I loose packets, because with UDP there is no resend cost, so overall I gain (check it out). At the top rate more packets get through. This wouldn't work with TCP natch, so if I leave it like that I'm slowing my TCP a little. But what the hell...

This would happen to a friend of mine, while playing Chernarus (not plus) on a2. We could switch to Takistan and have no such problem. This was always consistent, his connection was never suspect. I have a typical Arma pc (overclock, ssd, high v-ram) He had a slow AMD, when I covinced him to lower his view distance on Chernarus it helped. He would always jack up his settings on maps that where more optimized, then have problems on maps with a lot of foliage, Lingor was another slow map for him.

Not sure about Grimey Rick, that's odd. Possibly his PC is just too Grimey, we all know he how indecent he can be.
