I miss the global text chat channel that was in the MOD

Recommended Posts

Not the global voice one - that was incredibly annoying!

As a solo player, I used to enjoy socialising with other players on the server. I realise it's not very realistic or authentic to chat to players at the other end of the map (but then neither is teamspeak). But from a socialising and meeting new players angle, it was really good. It get's lonely out there nowadays.

I wonder what the dev teams plans are, apart from walkie talkies, in the long run, for player communication. Maybe there'll be an option for something like it, for server admins.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?

Last time I heard the plan was that something like Side-Chat (which made it possible for everyone to write and talk globally) will not be available.

When they get walkies to actually work, they'll be the new side chat.

As a (most of the time) lone wolf I would like to have a global chat which you can enable/disable.

Because you sometimes don't meet or see a soul for ages I think it would be a nice addition to remind you that this is a multiplayer game.

I would also like a notification when someone dies. Just a "player x has died" would be sufficient.

I hope so, as I used to really enjoy the banter. I treated it as something aside to the authenticty and immersivness of the game itself, if you get my drift. It just a nice was nice way of socialising, outside the 'game experience'. I find myself playing for hundres of hours now with barely any social interaction with other players (not players' characters, but players).

If folks want a strict, authentic reasoning behind having a type of side chat, maybe everyone should spawn with a mobile phone instead of a torch? ;-p

Pretty much all of what you're suggesting will not be in Standalone, as the Devs removed it for a reason. This does not mean it won't come later down the line on Private Shards / Mods - but not in the Public Hive (at the moment anyway).

Would be cool if the amount of static on the voip for walkie talkies was directly related to the distance they were from you.. (eg. Tracking someone down using the static on their channel when they talk, or get two other friends and triangulate)

But it DOES get lonely out there....thats for sure

I don't miss the 9 year olds screaming words that would get me banned from this forum for writing them here

No side chat is a blessing, I think the radios are fine for people who want this kind of chat, but to be fair I always have the radio on and have only heard someone once on it and they were singing, which proves my point really

I liked it too , Wish it was an option private servers could make active if they wanted, It was nice to chat with everyone while i had that 2 hour run across the map.

People have been saying this for three years.

Global chat, either text or voip, is extremely important for players to warn others about potential threats like a crazy KoS'er or hackers.

In before the 'unrealistic, immersion-breaking' brigade arrive.

I'm post-mod so never experienced it, but would love to have global text (not voice).

None of you have mentioned how global chat was used in the mod by murderers/bandits to prey upon new and friendly players.

If you want chat, go join a public TS for DayZ or join a clan.

I'm VERY happy without it, thank you.

I will never forget the days gone by.. when asking if there is friendlies in Cherno, only to hear back "Yes".. so hey that's where we all go, most of the server, but when we get there all that happens is WE DIE haha

Maybe we could have a beginner mode that as this feature for rookie players. Keep it a separate character from 1st and 3rd person servers and I don't see the harm.

So what's the moral here? A server with enforced global TS (some are) or voluntary server TS, or any clan TS ...and that's including TS for anyone who joins the game with 2 mates... is realistic, not-game-breaking, true post-apocalypse realismo, and ultra-immersive ?

All these dudes get washed up on the beach with their modern comms equipment still fully functional, still tuned in, and still attached to their heads ? And they don't even need batteries? That's highly realistic?

So DayZ enforces the headset rule?.. You have to have a microphone to play 'the real game' and you have to join at least 1 teamspeak channel? If this is true, let's be honest and have two TS channels with each DayZ server, and call one "Red Team" and the other "Blue Team" ? (that's a joke, ok?)

But using a radio you find in the game, and a battery you find in the game, to give you the ability to TYPE and for your text to be SEEN by anyone else with a radio, a couple of Km away, is unrealistic..??  hmm... in what way?

Because, as you know from way back, typing conversations with someone at a distance is called 'side-chat'.. it always has been.

There is no plan at all to introduce side-chat in DayZ - but I HOPE there is a plan to get the radios working, and text-only radio would eliminate the vocal nutters who play crap music and shout all day. So let's HAVE radios ... because radios and side-channel are the same thing, right? We are using different words to describe the one same function here.

How about -  for a start - a single channel radio, and anyone who has one, can type text that can be read by anyone else who has one, within a reasonable distance..

Use no multiple channels, use no voice...just keyboard..one channel -  simple. If you don't like it or you don't want it, most probably you only want to TS with your mates so no one can overhear you.. then throw the radio away, dude!

THEREFORE : turning on an in-game radio opens the text-no-voice side chat, turning off the radio closes the text-no-voice side chat.

How does that wreck the game?

How? well..yes - you're right, it would spoil the game by being unfair to the TS people. It would slightly reduce their 'hyper-realistic' advantage

Or else go figure a way to block TS out of DayZ altogether (heh!) and lets be really immersive. But in fact, let's be real about how the game works. How can you use the words 'TS' and 'immersion' in the one same phrase?

Doesn't that make you feel silly?

xx

p.s. On side-chat, on my working radio, I'm hoping BadAsh is listening, so I use my keyboard to type  << BadAsh I agree with you dude, I never talk to anybody in this game.

Face to face - voice talk - with a player, I wait through his 3 seconds of silence so I KNOW he's TSing his mates. Then I shoot him: 4 seconds is too late. >>

It's also extremely immersion-breaking, and takes away from the atmosphere.

No, it gimps the casuals who don't play with friends and use TS.  Those who do have a huge advantage.  It's not immersion breaking to have a working radio system in the DayZ world.  Suggestions from three years ago include having to actually find a radio handset just like you do for your map , compass, etc, in order to communicate.

If we really want to go down the immersion route, then let's put a long ass respawn timer because you should not be able to jump back into the game after dying.  Let's also remove the 3rd person camera.

As one who rabidly hates the current status messages it's odd that I really miss the side chat and death notifications. Side-chat was just so entertaining in the early days of the mod, especially at night. Ahh, the days when you could find 39/40 night time servers with scared people on the chat, the red glow of flares calling you to battle and dozens upon dozens of relentless zombies on screen simultaneously. I don't miss having to wait 20 minutes to log into a server but nothing beats those early days of the mod and the side chat was a big part of it.

Oh, I don't care about the whole Team Speak debate.  Just pretend you and your friends happened to wash ashore with working coms and flashlights or whatever.

I do like the idea of a "global side chat" (or whatever it was called), but tied to the walkies or otherwise embedded in the game.  I've also suggested the idea of fixed radios at places like ATC towers, Green Mountain, police and fire stations, pretty much any place where you would expect a radio.  Maybe even the ability to leave a repeating message (because that can't be abused :D ) until someone else comes along to turn it off or change it.  Echoing what other people described, I liked being able to listen to the inane chatter while tucked away off in some safe corner of the map.
