Devblog update: Where is the Standalone?

Recommended Posts

I have been away for a few days and just checking in on news about the release. So nothing has changed, we're still waiting for news on the CB test and no streams have gone up yet :( Oh well back to gaming

It's speculation based on the fact that Dean leaves to climb Everest in April and the recent Q&A.

So when he goes to climb the mountain, can you please make sure he is covered in bubble wrap and connected to at least 2 or 3 ropes. I mean we don't want any unfortunate accidents and the Day z coming to a girding halt or not reaching it's full potential.

I think that there should be a weight system connected to food...So if you drink more soda, eat less healthy food, or just eat a lot, you get fat, possibly even sick...If you only eat the bare minimum, you start to look gaunt and skinny.

If you hunt, cook and eat animals on a regular basis, as well as being physically active, you become leaner and more muscular. Possibly even gain a physical/stamina advantage over players that go solely for processed/convenience foods and get less exercise.

Also, water holes could be contaminated by dead bodies, animal and infected corpses, making water sources potentially dangerous, or even as traps that make people sick and require medical attention... Of course, there would need to be signs that the water was contaminated, to make things fair.

Water sources could be valuable resources.

Dang... it's a shame that even arma 3 no Moon is nowhere to be seen... and therefore no moonlight.

I'm starting to believe that the theory that the military blew up the moon in the Arma universe is true.

I don't know what videos you have watched but it is improved. Do you know how dark it really gets in countryside when there's no light source nearby?

Interesting. But still too dark IMO.

Yes, I've been to the countryside multiple times with no lights nearby except the moon, and once my eyes get used, this is how bright it can get:

Well it never gets so dark as its in arma2.

That arma3 video is already 100 times better than what its in arma2, I hope the brightness doesnt change by the direction you are looking at. What is in that video could be cloudy night, and somewhat brighter when there is a moon light.

That is the most annoying thing in present lighting system, it gets so stupidly dark when you just turn 90 decs... doesnt matter if you are in foreset or a field.

Will we have the ability to jump in the standalone? My spacebar gets lonely when I play DayZ...

Hell no, think of this scenario, someone irl is shooting at you, do you then proceed to go all Call of Duty and start jumping up and down to avoid bullets?

And it's the moon that makes all the difference.

You see it's the entire surface of the moon that reflects sunlight back to the dark side of the earth, is so bright it makes it easy to distinguish features at night. Remove the moon from the equation and all you're left with is star light. The star sky is incredible beautiful on cloudless and moonless nights, because the atmosphere isn't filled with light particles that drowns the majority of stars out. On a moonlit night you see hundreds of stars, on a moonless night you see thousands or millions. Star light simply isn't sufficient to make a difference for the human eye trillion of kilometers away from earth. The star closest to the Earth is 270.000 times more distant than the sun and while the sun's light only takes 8-9 minutes to reach earth, this star takes more than 4000 years to reach us and it's 1/17.000 weaker than the sun.

Night vision googles enhances light 50.000 times, but on a moonless night, with the star sky covered with clouds, there isn't much light to enhance.

In ArmA/DayZ the sun nor the moon or the stars are static objects on the sky. The sun follows the calendar and clock, it rises and sets at different times of the day depending on the time of the year in the game. The moon follows it's own calendar, when it appears on the night sky, whether it's a bright full moon or an almost covered new moon. The stars and constellations also rotate 360 degrees on the night sky.

I'm not claiming that I have big knowledge here, but a fullmoon definately doesn't light up a completely non-light polluted area as much as it does in ArmA/DayZ or as in that picture. In the picture, the sky is obviously lit up by the sun, maybe a short while or so before sunrise. The ground has had it's light amplified by the camera, otherwise it wouldn't be able to produce such a crisp image.. there's a reason for the flash of light when the picture is taken beyond just brighting it up some more and catching every flaw on your skin. But again, cameras are not exactly my field of expertise and they might have some functions and abilities that I don't know of.

The way that sky looks is exactly how it looks where I live during many sunrises, assuming it's a fullmoon. Let's say it's about as bright as it is in Norway at 4am during summers, just a short while before sunrise. I cannot say how it is in any country further south than where I live, but I know it's more static with sunrise/set regardless of season. Like.. 12 hour day and night during winter and summer, while here during day we have 18 hour sunlight during summer and just 6-8 or so during winter. But regardless of season, when it reaches it's darkest, even if it's fullmoon in non-light polluted areas, it's so dark you can scarcely see anything.

The sun is, from what I can read but wouldn't bet my life on since it's not my field of expertise, 400 000x brighter than a full moon. You can only imagine how bright that would be if the moon had really illuminated as much as in that picture. But I can agree that it needn't be pitch black, but it's just not enough to light up as much as it does in ArmA2/DayZ.

I like how vaulting works in BF3, something like that could be useful (if you "jump" while running into an obstacle you quickly vault it). Realistic jumping mechanics, as in you jump really low and could only jump far if you have some momentum, could be fun and more important pretty useful. Imagine gearing up with little or no gear to keep your weight down and mobility/speed up and then climbing the drainage pipes and moving through towns via the rooftops. Scavenging made awesome!

Good idea, but level design of cities in the game are not thought for parkour ahah. Anyway, climbing walls with different animations depending on the weight equipped would be pretty cool. Would give the newspawn who have no gear a little advantage over well equipped bandits, in the way they could more easily climb over stuff, vault, or even have a slightly better runspeed.

No obviously it's not, that's where the "imagine" part came in. :)

And I didn't really mean parkour anyway, just that it would be fun to climb to the top of a building and crashing down on a building next to it as a last resort escape!

I don't know whether you have played DayZ but with the amount of running involved i would always be thin and healthy regardless of the food i ate haha

0:00-1:15 it's (cloudy) full moon on the video and then it's without full moon from that point onwards. I agree on that brightness changing, it's so annoying.

In Arma 2 when the sun is set down there is this über pitch black 2-3h that's the biggest problem because you really can't see anything but after that the brightness goes up to this or bit lower if not clear sky:

arma2night.jpg

It is bright but man just black/white is ugly :D I'm really hoping that we can see Arma 3 lighting in DayZ because the difference and improvement is so big if you compare it to Arma 2.

It saddened me that Standalone did not come before new years, but I am glad they are getting more and more people and more and more funds to work with :)
