Ruined gear.

Recommended Posts

As a new player to the game,  I was wondering what everyone thought of the ruined gear mechanic?

Myself I see it as kinda annoying.  If you work hard to get in a position to kill someone (I'm generally a friendly player)  and manage to take somebody out,  you should kinda be rewarded for that kill.  It seems to me that gear gets ruined way too easily.  A single burst shouldn't ruin nearly everything a player is carrying.  This is just my opinion.

Like I mentioned above I try to be friendly wherever possible but we all know that isn't possible most of the time.

Would be interesting to hear the community's thoughts. Thanks.

I think the ruined gear mechanic is absolutely necessary for the atmosphere of the game. It's more incentive to try and not get hit so your own gear isn't destroyed - And since murder is just a choice you have in game, there ought to be rewards/punishments in taking someone else's life.

I like the mechanic, but I think there ought to be some scaling with how much it ruins. Occasionally its a bit silly where one bullet ruins a vest, shirt, and backpack.

I honestly think until they get to a point where players life span is worth something and we need to work together all gear should get ruined on players killed by other players to remove incentives to work against each other but that's just me.

I play immersed in the "world" constantly have that shat on by people who log on and try and get as many kills a easily as possible in a short play session like battlefield or COD even though there's no one keeping score or leaderboard.

I've walked back to the coast geared numerous times with a spare vest, waterbottle, knife, etc. trying to find a random freshie to give a head start in the game and have never once had it work, they see my Gorka coat and SKS and want to punch me out for it.

I look forward to vanilla getting to the point of weeding out players looking for a shooter or just grievous gameplay.

I think gear gets ruined too easy also and should be tuned down.

I think bandits doesn't really care if the gear of the players they kill gets ruined, they are gonna kill anyway, some of them, mostly NW airfield and Myshkino campers, just kill players and don't even loot them, I guess because they are afraid of being killed by another camper. Others kills fresh spawns, surely not for their loot.

So nobody thought of the possibility to do a hold up / robbery? You don't necessarily have to kill someone to have his/her gear. Anyone can shoot someone in the back like a coward. Communicating and controlling an interaction is much more challenging AND rewarding...for both sides. And no gear gets ruined, maybe this is what the devs intended...

Robbery is a great addition to the game, but I think most bandits like to kill players more than getting his loot.

I totally agree and understand Psychonaut_78, when you kill a bandit you like to have his gear, and see that all is ruined after kinda sucks.

I like bandits and dumb bandits even more, I think Dayz would be really boring without them.

This will also be the reason why they want to introduce "non lethal weapons". If in the finished version an SVD is so rare that it may not be ruined to get it, players will have to find other tactical ways to get to this loot. A simple kill is not to be rewarded, whether it's a bandit or friendly babe.

I like the mechanic because when you think about it, most stuff in a backpack is kinda lumped together anyway and if a powerful round burst through all that stuff, you'd be hard pressed to find stuff that wasn't busted up after that. Also if you've noticed when you're hit by say a .22 or .380 your stuff is less likely to be catastrophically damaged. Like many other things in this game it could use some tweaking but I like the incentive to hold people up instead of blast them, and sometimes you get genuine dismay after finding out you've ruined everything that could've been useful on a character's body. Side note I really hope sorting out ammo comes back :X

Not sure how this quote system works on mobile :-P some really good points being made in the thread so far.  I agree that there has to be a consequence to killing other players.  But as another poster pointed out there are tons of people who kill for killings sake and don't even loot bodies.

I don't want to see this game be a PvP based shooter.  I much prefer the hardcore survival aspect of the game and want to see this increased.  I also only kill if I have too.  Maybe a compromise could be that ruined gear isn't so common?  I have seen a whole body of ruined gear from a burst from a gun.

I also like anothers suggestion to hold up players and I think it's really cool that you can do this and it's definitely something I'm going to try and get better at.  I've been held up a couple of times and it's great fun in a weird way!

I have faith in the devs to deliver.  I just thought this could be a interesting topic to discuss :-)

If you keep your server down on loot spawns it wont turn into a massive pvp shooter, but it is a pvp-pve shooter. There is no end game, and pvp is the end game, once your done building your base, get all the loot you can, you will turn to pvp. At some point you will change. There is only so much vanilla people can play. This is why modding is being introduced for the other experiences.

@OP i completely agree with the ruined gear part, why i intend to remove that part after modding.

Well, you are pretending to be a survivor in a pretended Russian country pretending to be able to run for miles and miles without resting. You are pretending to be alive during a pretended outbreak of some pretended infection and try to stay safe from pretended infected pretended inhabitants and pretended wolf packs. You pretend to have a backpack full of pretended gear and you carry pretended weapons which you pretend to shoot at others who pretend to be a survivor like you, both of you most likely pretending to be friendly. I guess pretending to be a robber could be added to the list?

;)

I think it will be adjusted in the future. You guys are right one round(or even more) through an article of clothing isn't going to ruin everything inside of it.

I have 2400+ legit hours in the game and i rob people, and if i shoot someone down while pvping, i will go up to that person tie them up and rob them and most the time let them go.

What i've been doing lately in NWA is shooting someone down and then stripping them naked and giving them the choice to live or die, if they choose to live, i tell them to walk a straight line down NWA strip without getting off until they reach the other side, if they make it to other side in one piece they are free.

Just wait for the new player controller to get added into the game; after that, we'll see how the bullet damage works.

I'm hoping that there will be positional clothing feedback when hit, such as that a hit the the left shoulder will ruin items in the upper left corner of the vest, shirt, and backpack, leaving the right and lower portions of those containers undamaged.

@OP:  Have you tried just shooting people in the legs and restraining their hands?  This works fairly well, when you can pull it off, and you get to feel like a really badass when it works out okay.  I kinda feel shitty after taking way-too-easy kills, just to get the kill, ruined gear or not.  Like playing basketball to win, but against a 5 year old.

Other than the shooting problem, I experienced some even worse item degradation:

- falling from some high place (a couple of meters)

- getting clawed from Z's

The first one have ruined my shoes, trousers, almost all items contained into the pockets.

After the last one I got 10 shotgun shells and some other item ruined with a couple of hits by a single Z (no bleed on my char)

Yup best to put tons of apples in your bags, pants. Until that is adjusted. and apples get fixed.

Thanks man for your post(s) :-P yeah that's definitely another option!  I just need to get good!  I've got 80 hours so far so still a n00b...  Learning every life though which is one of the things I love about this game.

Some other very good suggestions.  I guess the new player controller will change many things.  Looking forward to seeing the devs vision realised.  Still would like ruined gear to not affect every bit of equipment tho,  but like others have said there are other options.
