Just remember, boys are 100% stupid until they get to about 25 years old, or thereabouts. From age 25 to 35, they are only about 75% stupid. At 35, they typically have offspring and will start to act almost normal. I'm well above that 35 age, but I practice KOS routinely. It is the way I enjoy playing, as I am fearful that other players may take all my oxygen. I need oxygen, so I have no choice really.

 

If I see you in-game, I will shoot at you well before you get close enough to talk. Sorry about that, well, not really sorry, just know that I feel your pain.

Back to topic. I dont really care if u are a woman or not and the fact that most of the People i meet are from another Country (well I try to avoid german servers, but dayum thats like avoiding a homing missile) makes them interesting for me. So i try to get a bit in touch when i go with them for a while, learn a bit about them and their Culture and this makes it a bit more cheerfull in a Game where u are running most of the time. So yeah thats my Point of View. If you are an europe Gamer I would advise you, not to go on a german Server, seriously don´t. I don´t like it to hate on my own People, but its by far the worst Gamer Community I have ever met. Only a few of them are thrustworthy.

Also try to avoid Player groups, they don´t need help and are most of the time hostile.

How do you feel when you meet a girl in Dayz?

 

Provided you are non threatening, seem friendly and not acting in a suspect manner I would have no problems with you.  We could sit and chat and if I have some extra supplies I would offer them up, just like I would for a guy.  But if not, then I won't hesitate to shot you just like I would anyone else.  

 

Honestly, I don't really care what gender you are.  It all comes down to if I think you will try and stab me in the back the second you can or not.  Other than that, it helps if you can shot and understand some basic team play.

I don’t know how to write this. Predominantly, I am worried that most will look at this with prejudice and that the term ‘attention whore’ will be thrown around.

 

I guess what I am trying to say is; please take this seriously, as it is in no way an attempt to seek attention of any kind. It is meant as a serious discussion on an issue, which has significantly ruined my gaming experience to the point at which I am considering giving up on this game entirely.

 

Although I am fairly new to this game, I have had my fair share of really bad experiences (KoS being the main one, but that is a discussion which is already going on). I am not sure whether this is just down to bad luck or simply bad gameplay by me.

 

Either way, what has bothered me the most (KoS aside) is the fact that most people are very discontented about the fact that I am a girl. Some have even accused me of using voice-changing software when they hear my voice even though I never bring attention to my gender.

 

Before anyone says, “it’s because you were a threat/bandit/mean/” that they mistreat you. I don’t play as a Bandit. Heck, for the most part I’ve been trying to play as a Medic/Hero although this hasn’t worked out very well so far. I am very nice and helpful to everyone I meet. Therefore, people have no reason for shooting me or mistreating me. In many cases, I am certain that if I had a male voice, people would be much nicer to me.

 

There was one time where a few minutes after re-spawning, I came across a big group of people (about 5-7) whom started shooting in my direction as soon as they saw me. I immediately went on to say, “Please don’t shoot. I do not have anything. I have just spawned” while holding my hands up. One of them walked right up to me and said, “It doesn’t help being a girl in this game, so bye.” Then he killed me.

 

I am so sick and tired of people assuming that I am some troll who is only pretending to be a girl. Yes, I am aware of the fact that there are not a lot of girls playing this game, but that doesn’t mean that everyone who has a girl’s voice is a guy with voice-changing software!

 

I realize that there are also many people who are under the assumption that girls who play games use their gender as a means of gaining special privileges, but it is unfair to assume that this accounts for ALL girls. I for one have never done any such thing.

 

I have considered looking into using voice-changing software to sound like a male in order avoid situations of prejudice and gender bias, but I am not sure if this would be a viable option?

 

When someone meets a girl in Dayz, do they just immediately assume that it is a man? Do they hold some sort of grudge against girls who play games? What is it with all this prejudice against girls?

First off, Dont let it get to you. Many use "atention whore" or any of those other accusations you mention as a means to justify what they were going to do anyways.

 

Second, altho you may have not done anything wrong there are plenty of female players who DO exploit any sympathy thier shown based on thier gender, and this isn't a problem explusive to dayZ. it's an unfortunate side effect of human nature but it comes almost naturally to many of us to make sweeping generalizations after some bad expereinces. it's kind of that old addage about a few bad apples ruining the bunch. your almost labeled (unfair as it may be) based on the expereiinces and stories about what others have done.

 

Third, There are more female players then most realize. A fair few choose not to interact/communicate wit randoms for the very reasons the op brings up. My wife also plays but only talks over TS or skype within our group never in the In-game chat for pretty much this exact reason. to be compleetly honest; i dont balme her (or you) one bit for not wanthing to be subject to a bunch of immature pre teen kids acting like jerks (more then usual) because they heard your voice.

 

TL;dr - Don't let a few asshat kids ruin your fun. move on and try to enjoy the game. perhaps try looking for a regular group to play with (doesnt have to be a formal clan or antyhing, just a few friends or something) and chat that way. sad fact is this sort of behavior is all over the internet and internet tough guys love finding an easy excuse for thier actions.

Dont forget we are fierce socialists in Denmark and most of us are against weapons, so we dont really want to either fight or kill others, which seems to carry over into the game aswell :)

All we want is healthcare, jobs for everyone and tons of bacon :D

 

 

Its difficult to be anything other then a KOS-prick in this game tbh. Most people are very fond of trolling and fucking with other people, just because they can.

And i would assume, with the amount of 12 year old pre-teens we have here, it is in no way an advantage to be female IRL. In fact it might actually be a disadvantage, because some people are more likely to troll you.

The video on page 1 is a prime example of people hiding behind an anonymous video character, acting like 16th century catholics on a witch hunt.

 

The only thing you can be sure of in this game, is that people are gonna treat you like an idiot and use offensive language.

Personally i dont care, its really hard for me to care about some random dude, from the other side of the world, trying to show his penis size in a video game :)

But that is the nature of the game.

So the best advice i can give you, Caitlin, is to "not give a fuck" :) The less you take it personal, the more you will enjoy the game imho.

I have been called a "neeger" so often in DayZ that I have learned to tune it out. Just like the word "friendly" it means nothing. I think it comes down to the fact that DayZ provides a more visceral experience than many other games. When I kill (or attempt to kill) other people they tend to get super pissed and lash out in any way they can. If they can't put a bullet into my head they try to attack my heart. Little do they know that bullets are my only weakness.

I was playing with my buddy and this other new guy to the group. We were running around Berez, and we spot a player. So, we were going to go up to the guy and handcuff him/break legs. We get closer and it turns out it's a girl. The new guy gets all giddy (like a fucking weirdo) and shit and starts talking to her. They have a conversation and he was going to let her live just because she was a girl. I wasn't having that. I shot her in the legs, and left her to crawl. The new guy got pissed at me and tried to help her. I shot him in the fucking face and hid hiscorpse and removed him from the group. Left her crawling around too. Not quite a true statement that now is it, considering that almost every major city, town and large village in DK has a shooting range, that in a population of 5 mil or so that there are over 300k with hunting licences and that DK has relaxed certain gun laws expanding the acceptable calibers.

As for fierce socialists.....well not really either; fierce democrats more like as DK was the first country to have a democratically elected government system (since Harald bluetooth). I know a fair amount of Danes that vote Venstre or DFP.

Danes are great people though and the other statements, well who doesn't want healthcare, jobs and tons of bacon ! which will now have me dying for bacon until I get back to DK.

Well, I guess for one there is a group of players that are generally toxic and will insult you no matter what.

 

You have a female voice? -> something sexist                your char is black? -> racial slurs          they killed you/ you killed them -> "you suck, faggot....."

 

But I suppose there is a second group of brodudes and immature players that, while oftenly belonging to the first group anyway seem to have a special problem with women sharing their hobby.

I always underestimated those tendencies in the community, until I started to get interested in feminism and some feminist websites dealing with (the representation of) women in popular media like movies or games.

The backlash that sometimes followed up on some very basic and reasonable arguments and demands was quite extreme and oftenly very toxic. Which was surprising in a very negative way, but also acted as somewhat of an eye opener to issues i did not perceive that much before.

 

 

I think considerable parts of the gaming community are reactionary, sexist or simply toxic. We can hope, and work for that to change, but for the moment one unfortunately has to develop a thick fur and show the tough guys who's boss.

There are people playing DayZ SA who are misogynistic and will shoot you if they realise that you are female, just as there are in society in general.  Usually though people will shoot you because they are KoS, or Bandits, or because they are frightened or they think that you are setting them up/scouting them out for an ambush; I don't think it is because you are a girl per se.

 

I can only speak for myself here but I generally try to help people and talk to them, however I am very wary, especially with bambi's who have nothing to lose, no matter there sex, colour, religion or creed.

I find it the other way round, socially awkward teenage boy gamers will fawn all over for girl gamers to the point of sycophancy. Personally I treat women the same as I treat men, after all we all have the ability to be utter cunts, but it is truly disappointing to see so many men show favouritism to the "fairer" sex just because, in real life, they have a different set of genitals and perhaps some attractive lumps in their shirt.

That said I come from the first generation of gamers where there were very few women online so perhaps I just don't fall for their "wily charms".

You can psycho-analyze this all you want but at the end of the day, this is DayZ. You will be killed, mistreated, verbally abused etc. no matter what gender/race and so on.

 

If you think you are being put at a disadvantage because you are female - I'm presuming you play with a feminine name (i'm not meaning to stereotype) - you can always change it and stick to text chat.

 

My girlfriend plays with the group and myself and has rarely been subjected to anything more than "you're a bitch". She's grown enough (and normally armed enough) to deal with these players accordingly.

 

On your point of playing a "hero/medic". That doesn't matter in the slightest. People play this game to kill anything with a heartbeat, learn to avoid coming into contact with KOS players.

last week a long time friend got into dayZ and just the other day got another of his friends, a lady, to start playing. the first time we all get to play together we dealt with kos'ing and the usual crap. it was all taken in stride as part of the game. no one was butthurt over anything.. in fact all of us enjoyed the harshness of the game and accepted the challenge it all offered.

around the third or fourth time regrouping and starting over we went deep inland to some of the smaller/medium size towns to stock up. sitting outside of a house sharing/sorting loot (rookie mistake lol) a group of three 20-something (judging from their not quite squeaker voices) surprised us and everyone screamed "friendly! whoa we're cool! friendly!" there was a few moments of talk. but one of us had trouble putting their melee weapon away so tension was rising. and I wouldn't drop my shouldered rifle when this kid was screaming to do so. well my friend gets shot and it's just me and the lady left.

as soon as she speaks and says I'm having sound/mic issues and couldn't reply to the not-quite-a-squeaker wanting me to drop my gun they shoot me and start saying shit like "hey look! a waking, talking vagina.. no worry we ain't gonna shoot ya lady, we need your 'services' haha. we gots pussy now boys!"

she wasn't offended and laughed it off in a "awww you poor little boys" kind of way. but it makes you wonder what kind of issues these kids have.
