Nice to hear a dev blog is on the way. Been some time.

And a question. Does anyone know, or can provide me with a link/post/quote concerning release platforms in general? What I mean is, I just don't like steam, and I'm trying to avoid using it for as long as I can. I know when SA comes out it'll be exclusively sold on steam, but I wonder whether there's a let's say "retail" release scheduled for the future. Has this even been discussed at all? Also if there's been talk on this, does anyone know if keys are going to be interchangeable? For example, SA alpha comes out, I buy it on steam, use it via steam (meh) until the project matures, retail (as in steamless) version comes out a year later, and I can use said steam key in order to install retail version, thus not having to buy SA twice, not having to miss the whole alpha/beta stage, and also being able to play the game without steam.

Please only reply if you can answer my question, and don't criticize me for not liking steam. I know it's useful in many ways (for both users and devs) and have nice sales, but I still don't like/need it.

I wouldn't expect there to be a steamless version at all, it's not just about the store, the game relies on Steam for everything, you need it to play.

They dropped Gamespy for server browser management and now use Steams instead

The game uses Steam for it's anti-cheat (VAC)

Updates to the game are all done through Steam's delta-patching system.

They are using Steam for anti-piracy and fraud protection.

even Gummy is satisfied

I don't see why anyone is surprised with my response. Two months ago when we were expecting a July/August release I said that that would be a rush job. Now a release before next year is questionable. Rocket's tone has switched gears and it needed to. I think Bohemia wasn't going to be satisfied with anything less than a $20 - $30 price-tag and somewhere along the lines they, and Rocket, realized what they had at E3 wasn't worth $20 yet.

Thanks for replying. I know about the necessity for steam in this stage (server browsing/anticheat/updates), that's why I asked for a future release once we're out of the beta stage. I mean, still we're in pre-alpha, so going with the already there all-in-one release platform makes sense, since there's no time for developing all these from scratch. But once the game matures and gets out of beta, couldn't they work on all these so it doesn't depend that much on steam? Or is this just my wishful thinking?

I don't get why people say they'd  rather wait for the standalone than to have the standalone now whilst there may be bugs......we all play the mod and if we can handle the mod im pretty sure we can handle a a buggy version of the standalone...also this game no matter how long we wait will be released in alpha so its gonna have bugs anyways lol.

Generally when people pay money for a game they expect it to at least run, in pre-alpha that is not the case. Updates often completely break the build to the point where it doesn't even launch.

It truly is a ground breaking feature being built into the core of the game engine. Theoretically it should make ESP/Aimbot/teleporting only effective within the 1.5km (or whatever the distance is) bubble. When coupled with solid Server Admin tools it should allow Admins to spot  teleporters easily and be able to kick/ban a script kiddie in real time, before major damage is done. i.e. teleporting in 1.5km increments could be picked up on by server admin tools. There are many possibilities.

haha is it only me who laughs a little if server admins have the same server tools to abuse and basically do what the mod is trying to stop and has plagued dayz since the start ?

admin logs in checks where everyne is gives himself anything he wants . oh wait we stopped long range esp hacks  what about admins !!! stop the toools letting admins see where you are live ! giving themselves gear and basically making themselves god. there is no point in stopping cheats then leaving other options for legit cheating.

Yes but if people where given the choice of playing pre-alpha or waiting for the alpha im sure they would go for the pre-alpha because at the end of the day there getting to play the game early even though they will experience bugs and problems like not being able to launch the game that's just part of being in pre-alpha and the risk they take for being able to play the game before the alpha version and they would know that already and would be happy enough to be given the option to play and help test the game.

Yes, people are happy to pay for a completely broken game, that's been proven time and time again with other titles. That's a really disappointing attitude though and is the reason developers can get away with making terrible games, people will buy them regardless. Consumers need to start making smarter decisions and demanding quality instead of demanding broken games are released now even if they clearly aren't ready. Releasing a pre-alpha build would only result in the game being slammed critically, why would they want that?

I remember in an interview when rocket himself said "we are in alpha"

So why the sudden jump back to pre alpha?

Its a load of rubbish if you ask me.

This isn't any game ..this is dayz ...a mod being developed into its own game. It has a dedicated fan base now and its not like people are being forced into playing pre-alpha it would be there for people who wanted to get there hands on a earlier version and help with testing etc. It is just that ...pre-alpha, who would slam a pre-alpha ? no one to be taken seriously that's who lol and anyways the game would speak for itself on actual release. As for devs getting away with making terrible games and people buying them ...again this is different as we all know how hard the devs are working on dayz and also those games you speak of have been fully released finished versions unlike this. Infact the same could be said for the alpha version ....people would still slam that...but will they be taken seriously ..hell no especially by the dayz fanbase that know its not a finished game.
