E3 Expo - June 2013 - Interviews and Gameplay

Recommended Posts

Ohhh OK. No Offense if someone asks ...here we go " Rocket will you be able to breast Feed if you a Female in the Game "......response " Not in the initial release, but something we are looking at down the track fpr the SA "

Question to ALL , what is the Game actually listed as at E3 , DAYZed, DAYZed SA, or other ? Kinda weird if it was called DayZ Stand Alone. But who would know, certinally not anyone Involved. What is BI going to call it ?

so your point is: there are no things implemented in the alpha which were not even promised. sounds reasonable. show me a source of anything you just think was promised initally and now is lacking. just one

Nothing to do with the newly created "Alpha Blindness" :) , if you haven't already read some of my above comments.

Interesting " please remember people this is and alpha and not a carry on from the mod but a WHOLE NEW GAME" NO it isn't the Map is the Same, Buildings are the SAME, yes they are more 95% enterable and some random differences . What about Sounds ?? Have we heard SOUNDS yet, most sound the Same. This is E3 , Not hey Look what we Havent done ! .......check all Stands before answering.

ok the map is the same and so are the sounds that just leaves the

engine

zombies

suvivers

animations

pathfinding

loot

guns

cars

ui

AI

and the map has alot more in it and more interiors

they started from scratch using a diferant staring engine (T.O.H not Arma 2) and striped out lots of it then created everything that makes the game dayz FROM SCRATCH

it is not the mod not 1 part of the stand alone is the same as in the mod

There is definitely progress and as long as Rocket preserves and enhances that special magic mix of fear, anxiety survival and combat the game will be successfull even if it will

never look as polished as AAA titles.

But one thing still bothers me, Rocket talks about how they do not have funds for 3rd-party tools or time to implement better tech [because of lack of resources]. I wonder if Rocket was wrong to go with Bohemia which seem to be treating SA as a low-budget side-project, maybe he should have gone with Kickstarter to fund the game, in the it's heyday the mod could have gathered a truly obscene amount of money, enough to send Rocket to the Moon for two months and still have left over to license any engine/tools and complete creative freedom. A project I just sponsored ( http://www.kickstart...iance-flashback ) collected almost 400K from 7 thousand people, imagine what DayZ could have got from hundreds of thousands!

SIMPLE Rocket was employed by Bohemia when creating the Mod, with their agreeance. Then sold the concept to them ( Bohemia Interactive ) for an undisclosed amount. Rocket works for BI and is making DAYZ SA for Bohemia interactive and will answer to them if need be.

Agreed he could have had a min of 30 Mill in something like Kicker, but I just mentioned Why

We all knew it was coming, but think about it like this.

The worst thing that could happen, is that everyone buys DayZ on release day and it all falls over.

The best way to counter the criticism is for us to deliver a good game that solves the issues. So I'd ask people to keep calm when the same thing gets posted again and again. Rather than saying "it's alpha" (or more correctly, "it's pre-alpha"), it might just be better to say "then it's a good reason not to buy the alpha".

I like this for many reasons:

  1. It lowers the sales on release, giving us a soft release where - as the game gets better - more people feel compelled to play. As they see us fixing bugs that they thought would not be.

  2. It keeps us, as developers, motivated to actually fix these bugs to increase the perception of the game, and increase the sales.

  3. Hell, I/boehmia make more money from beta/retail sales anyway. So fuck it, if people aren't happy now then don't buy it until Beta/Retail and I go buy that damned lambo.

We're taking a very different approach to traditional titles, nobody ever really shows a pre-alpha unscripted build at E3. So we can expect some heat, it's okay.

What we do now is fix the issues and deliver a good game, that's the best thing we can do.

please pin it everywhere..thank you

I find it silly how a t-shirt can hold 6 item slots :)

Everything has 6 item slots because it's a work in progress :)

It uses line of sight so items will only show in the "vicinity" part of the inventory if you can directly see them.

that was the question :-)

People here really need to manage their expectations. Since dev's have started showing their games during the development process they have been inundated with negative feedback from their respective communities. Regarding DayZSA specifically, this footage is PRE-ALPHA, the alpha hasn't even been released yet, but Rocket etc thought 'wow what a great idea, goto E3, show off some of the things we have been working on so far, our community will appreciate that'. And yet, look what happens. It is an absolutely terrible trait to judge something before it's finished; you can criticize a pile of wood for being in the way or poorly cut sure, but that woo may end-up being a beautifully polished table (or w/e analogy you prefer).

So as many before me have before, I shall do so again just for the sake of this topic explain what the stages of development mean:

Pre-Alpha = At the drawing board, implementing fundamental mechanics. NOT AN OAK TABLE

Alpha = Basic underpinnings of a playable game, basic controls and functionality. NOT A BEECH WARDROBE

Beta = Work begins to move away from mechanics and systems and more towards graphics, sounds, additional features. NOT MAPLE DRAWERS

Release = The game is at a point where it has most of the intended features in place, some bugs, exploitables and glitches remain, patches follow to address such issues. A WELL CRAFTED BED FRAME, MINUS THE WOOD POLISH.

My God people, grasp this concept so we need not suffer your ignorant musings.

Oh and to maintain the topic's integrity, I'm really liking the new inventory system, drag and drop has always been a great concept IMHO, I especially liked the dragging of items over from one pair of jeans to another, so much more intuitive than before. Also the Z's look like they want to give you a hug :D

In another post I asked these questions ( Sorry for those that already read them )

PREVIOUS POST A couple of questions from the Video. Doubt they will be answered by any Devs as its not Twitter or Reddit

- Are all Zombies going to Leap/jump at me now ( sorry im a traditionalist when it comes to Zombie genre, and prefer slow moving or at the very least not Leaping Zombies

- Whats the facination with Motorbike helmets, Matt almost wets himself when he sees one, looks damn stupid. Somebodies wonderful inclusion that has to be shown now on every Video, looks foolish

I don't believe we will see much leaping zombies. Don'like those much either. And I agree with thos

motorbike helmets. They need a big disadvantage but hdy it's early alpha :P

Most of the map hasn't actually changed at all or very little, that Building that was across from the Supermarket, is still there, man most we know off by heart, in any Town ( Yes agreed we can enter most buildings a BIG Plus ) Most of Chenarus is Identical from the latest build

Still w.i.p. Ivan and the new guy are working on it.

Matt mentioned that Rocket added the Knock Down just that Day, which is the Build they are using on the Stand. I like it , and like the randomness it is going to have

I like it too.

Most Vehicles are burnt out . HUH and then they have loot in them. Watch any Zombie Movie . 90 % of Vehicles are intact, might not be operational but the whole landscape is not burnt out Vehicles. ONCE again this is more from the Mod ie Arma 2 where the environment is part of a War Zone. We are supposed to be particapaiting in a Zombie Apocalypse that just happened are we not ? If it happened years ago why are there loot laying around as it would have been all gone withing the first few months after the Apocalypse.

Good point.

Now Rocket tells the Machinima Interviewer, sorry dont know his name, Standard Arma 2/ DayZ Mod Vehicles COULD be in the SA release. WTF ???? ROCKET " Will Space Travel to Mars be able in the SA Release " , " Not in the Initial Release, but something we are looking at "

Probably meant at the release on the alpha. There will be vehicles at some point.

What I am trying to highlight is how badly the whole process is actually handled. Is it much different to the Mod how things are done regarding communication, no not at all.

The release of DEV Blogs and Videos, NOPE just as badly handled. They were decided they would be Weekly, well that didnt happen, no announcment but they got a Monthly, then when ever. Have been a Total of what 5 ? Yeah sure they arent a right, but dont announce what you arent going to do.

Press releases and Interviews . NOPE all badly handled. Rocket has made a fantastic ( best MOD ) game I like to Play. Clearly in Rockets eyes he has decided Reddit and Twitter are his main forms of communication for the SA. Interesting that he did not show his Face on these Social Mediums when he missed HIS RELEASE DATE of the end of December 2012 for the SA. I'm Glad they didnt and like the direction they decided to take redoing the Engine etc, however he did not answer ONE person for over a Month.

NOW many that know me knows I am a big Supporter of DAYZed , before you Guys with 40 Posts fresh from Warz come a typing, But I am having real trouble from what is being released and how it's released Motivating many from our group and its followers to take up the SA.

The SA has so much potential but get it wrong and it quickly becomes a memory and I dont want that

How communication is handled doesn't really affect how good the game is unless you go on WarZ level.

Got to add that things are going like Dean predicted. Some people are disappointed and hype is getting lost when they see what alpha really means and I think he might be happy about that.

Watching the video with Matt got me a bit worried.

SinglePlayer DayZ with about 6-10 zombies on screen and lags everytime he squints towards vybor..?

Oh my... I sure hope that was a dual core with 4 gigs ram crappy desktop that someone brought to recicle.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz alpha blindness is comming in fast

please remeber people this is and alpha and not a carry on from the mod but a WHOLE NEW GAME

the build he was plaing was single player and only had 1 gun the AK

the game IS NOT READY YET thats why we can play it yet

Look at Minecraft. People loved alpha videos of Minecraft and it excited more people into buying it. That doesn't apply here. In fact this is very much the opposite. If you have to say "its just an alpha" then you're admitting that the alpha doesn't look good. With every new video less people tune in and more voice concern. http://i.imgur.com/YfI7Eht.png

Ok Fanboys, prepare to have your jimmies rustled.

  • Running on a dev PC with what looks to be "Normal" graphics at best, and it lags throughout the whole demo.
  • The hitboxes are absolutely dismal, and trying to say otherwise makes you look blind. The player is being hit from miles away, and before the animation has begun at several points.
  • Zombies are still clipping through walls (something supposedly remedied in the newest mod patch, so what's the dev's excuse for it?)
  • The UI is a joke. You're all talking about the excellent functionality, so I must be the only one here who notices it messing up several times.
  • The inside of buildings is nothing to piss your pants over, either. The textures are ugly, and you still can't run up stairs.
  • It's running on the same engine as the mod, and seems to be more poorly optimised somehow. Call it pre-alpha all you like, but I see no progress here from the gameplay demo from months ago.
  • Inventory system is ridiculous (look at the contents of jeans vs bag), not to mention it's ugly as sin.
  • Doors are obviously still awkward to use.
  • They've added extra buildings (something private hives have been doing for a long, long time.) Sorry if I don't shit my pants with excitement.
  • Rocket has specifically said on several occasions that the graphics will NOT be improved upon, so please stop fapping your guts out at how "beautiful" things look, it's making you look silly.
  • No vehicles at release because they're reworking them... I'm sorry, what? Isn't that the point of the standalone?

It's genuinely baffling me how this is exciting to anyone. It also seems that we've reverted to the old defence of "It's pre-alpha" blah blah blah. By all means, keep allowing it to blind you. I'd say the rest of us will have moved on by the time this turd comes out. To the rest of you still circle-jerking each other over it, have fun. I think I'll spend my money on a game that the developers have put in the effort to make it look like a current generation title. I wouldn't be surprised if the SA was killed by the mod. I'd like to be proven wrong, but I doubt it somehow.

The fact that the forum mods here are going out of their way to give people grief because they don't share their rose-tinted perspective is nothing short of pathetic. Real classy guys, real classy.

kay..see you then when you "suddenly" like the SA ;)

edit: ok you really seem to be frustrated. so better take a step back and keep an eye on the game from the distance. simply wait until everything is as you wish and then buy it and have fun with it.

rocket on the hit detection and infected animations:

"Very Important

Matt forgot to explain the situation with zombie attacks:

Basically, we made a new system for the zombie animation attacks, but there is no event handler for that yet because it just went in this week. We need the event handler to synchronize the animation with its attack effects. Currently, as a placeholder, it simply plays the effect half a second after the animation is started.

The event handler is scheduled to be finished any day now, which will allow us to sequence the attack. It's a very trivial change but will obviously instantly improve the output.

It has nothing to do with hit detection, animations, or anything. It's how it is designed a placeholder.

Because we are rewriting many parts of the engine, problems like this (i.e. known bugs waiting for replacement of placeholder elements) are very common through the development as we wait for the sequence of development to occur.

tl;dr

The zombie attacks aren't sequenced for the animations because its a new system thats 50% coded and waiting for event handlers to allow synchronization, which is trivial to implement once made."

There are allot of answers (or explanations) if you go to rockets reddit overview: http://www.reddit.com/user/rocket2guns

While I do agree that the footage shown does not look very good I still think it is cool that they have no designated E3-demo for showcasing but simply brought the latest build with all bugs present just to show it. How's that for transparency rhinowho?

I cannot comprehend why people are complaining.

I see great-looking urban environments, with enterable buildings that make towns feel like more than just a cluster of giant blocks to hide around.

I see improved animations on an improved character model. The survivor's holding his weapon more casually than before (notice the walking and surrender animations). Being knocked down is a great feature, and being unbalanced by zombie hits makes it really feel like you're being hit.

I see a much more intuitive inventory system. I don't see what makes it ugly, or why that would even matter; it's easy to use.

  • They've added extra buildings (something private hives have been doing for a long, long time.) Sorry if I don't shit my pants with excitement.

Such buildings, especially in Chernarus, aren't usually well implemented. The sheer amount of enterable buildings added must have taken quite a bit of work, and certainly help enhance the sense of immersion. The scope of these new additions certainly surpass, by far, any attempts made by modders on Chernarus.
