DayZ Developer Blog 8th March

Recommended Posts

Cool. Well now wev'e cleared that up lets talk about about the recent devblog.

Hey you brought it up ^^ Almost makes it seem you dont like me for some reason. All i was doing was prasing the 4000 zombies. If they manage to make them smart enough to be a threat people may actually have to work together instead of "pvp"

The current build isn't playable.

They haven't given an estimated release date because they just don't know. While they've made a lot of progress, there's still a lot of work to be done and they don't know how long it's going to take. Like Fraggle said - everyone just has to chill out and be patient. :)

it will be out before rocket goes away in alpha build or beta. it has to be as this is the last big sales period until sept oct time in games selling. so if it aint out for before rocket goes away get ready for a november launch minimum which is roughly when the rocket will land back .

id also like to address a few game breaking things that i havent heard about yet or know if they are in standalone but.. are very important to be either in it or fixed.

buildings that you can glitch in ! numerous buildings on all dayz maps are able to be entered whether they have no entrances or not. these can be exploited very easy by going through the textures into solid walls and so on.

for eg on hospitals in numerous places you can prone and crawl through walls, crawl through roof top buildings even though they appear solid. this can be done on hotels , tower blocks, churches numerous buildings.

alot of snipers abuse this and hide in glitches wait for people and pop out of invisible glitches then shoot people then go back inside.

in the gltiches you can see through the walls as if they are not there but a person who isnt in the glitch looking at you for instance cant see you . they will just see the preb building and nothing more. so imagine in big towns for eg people with snipers go in glitch you cant get em out . you cant shoot them in glitch either. so this isnt a bit of a bug its a big game changer.

2nd thing is where is third person ? not seen this in game yet and this is massive if it isnt in the game. this would be nice to know as i prefer 3rd person view on all time.

so thanks for info but can you please let us know about the glitching and if third person is in game.

haha mine craft testers  say no more.

I just think releasing the game wouldn't cause complaints, people are not stupid and know what they're buying. If you try to fool people like Warz, then you get that result, if you try to put some bullshit DRM on the game like Sim City, then you get that result. If you say the game is Alpha, buy it at this knocked down price, be honest about it and continue to support it, then you get the result of Minecraft or ARMA 3.

The only way that hacking issues can even begin to be dealt with, is with a major architectural change. How many times do I have to say this before people realize this? Hacking is very bad in the mod, we're just lucky that private servers have been able to pick up some of the slack. In the early days, it was the wild west out there.

And quite frankly, if I'm going to be expecting people to pay for something then I think they should be getting something new. This the one chance I have where I can do something different, I can steer the direction where I want. So I'm going to use that experiement and try some ideas and concepts that I never would have had the chance to on a more traditional project.

While we're on the subject of payment - Will you be opening up the Alpha for Pre-orders, or just opening the flood gates as soon as it's ready to push out?

Rocket, forgive some peoples impatience, although most of us are more than happy to wait until you are satisfied with the game a few just can't contain their excitement.

As long as you don't wait forever (there is a sayin' in the mil, a good game now is better than a grate game later ;) or something like that

Horah! 3 things that kind were "meh" in the blog. First the testers were... awkward and didn't really participate much in discussion, it felt like Rocket had to force them to speak. Wish they could have someone like dslexy on this. Second, the blur/motion was kind of making me sick, maybe it just one of the post options that can be turned off. 3rd, the head bobs a little bit too much, in real life I barely see any head bobbing in my vision, hope Rocket will fix that. All of that aside, great job!!!

Options - game options - head bob (adjust accordingly). Already implemented.

loving it, love the shadows, the vaulting the zombie pathfinding love the zombies this game is going to be nuts

and rocket if you want to make every vid with that type of editing its fine by me

all I want is the info I don't care about the production values

The teams times would be better spent making the game than making a nice looking vid

Hello there

I know this is a rather long thread so some folk may have missed the fact that the video of the test was hastily thrown together in a very short time and completely unedited.

Most showcase videos are shot with a lot of "direction" chatter which is then removed and replaced with normal in game FX in the "dub" at the end of the edit.

It's evident that this was originally planned but time obviously did not permit.

"Pro" tubers do the same thing. It's rarely "raw" footage.

Personally, I'd prefer that the dev's kept in in house rather than source it out to a 3rd party.

There'll be enough time to get subs and make some pennies when the alpha is out.

Rgds

Awesome video Rocket, can't wait to see the new skeletons for zeds and players !

Loved the video except for one very, very small thing that bothered the hell out of me, those Reddit people Rocket was playing with in game were just horrible. When Rocket asked them simple basic questions they would clam up and be awkwardly silent for no reason.Rocket really needs people like Shannon Z Killer when he does videos like that in game.

Sure, but let them get to the game part first. If one pays attention to the devblogs, there isn't a playable game yet.

It's easy for people to say they'll be fine with a buggy alpha that is lacking some core features, but look at the forums for the mod and you'll see the truth of it - and all that bitching is for a free mod. If it's released too soon, the comments will likely change from the 'it's cool if it's a buggy alpha, just give it to us' to 'I know this is an alpha, but x feature is bugged, FIX IT YESTERDAY!!' and 'I paid x for this?!'

Believe me, I'm chomping at the bit to play this game, too. But, I'd much rather wait and have them fix/refine/improve some of the things that plague the mod before release than have to deal with those things in the SA.

I for one, have downloaded the TKOH demo and am checking out how that engine runs on my computer (I know it won't be exactly the same, but I'm hoping it might give me some idea of cpu strain... besides, maybe it'll give me a leg up on flying.) :)

First, make the game as long as you feel it needs. I would prefer to play very late alpha then unready one. My money is stored in "Only for Day Z standalone" shelf till end of year ;)

Second, I like devblogs like this. Last Alien game had great dev videos, but game was crap. It can be otherwise with Day Z.

Short IDEA that came to my head after watching this devblog (footprints feature).

I don`t know how many of you guys watch "The walking dead", but for whose who watch. In last episode there was guy, who was using animals to attract zombies (rats, rabbits in cages). This could be quite fun feature in Day Z - catch a rabbit into cage (made with new great crafting system), then use it to attract zombies in city - which allow to loot some places which are overrun.

How I see this working. I`m not sure about how Arma models are build, but I would add "attractive" var to object (women model always get 100%!). When zombie see some actor (animals/people are the same object?) and check it`s attractiveness. If there are two models in same distance he (it?) will choose more attractive. I would add some function to count attractiveness with distance, sight, smell values.

This could be quite fun feature - some other objects could have +/- addons to attractiveness - for example red shirt give +10 attractiveness and red shirt covered in zombie meat -5. This makes a lot more possibilities in avoiding enemy (of course it won`t affect PvP).

What do You Rocket think about his? Will such feature kill server CPUs?

Btw. I was always wondering why zombies don`t eat animals. I would be funny to see 100 zombies running after small rabbit ;)

I didn't say I want it now, I just meant that they should not wait forever until everything is polished (IE, when it is playable, present it, don't wait until you implement this, implement that, etc)

Looking really exciting! :D I wonder though is it possible to have the zombie pathfinding a little more dynamic? Instead of having the zombie run/chase on your path strictly, maybe it would be 'more realistic' if the zombies tried to take the shortest path towards the player directly, instead of the zeds having to follow the exact curves on your path. I can't wait to see the inventory system. AND CHERNO NOW LOOKS DAPOWUDHAODUWA RAINBOWPUKE!!

Btw, will the big city buildings be accessible too?

That motion blur is giving me a fucking headache.

It can be turned off, don't worry. Not sure why Rocket insists on recording videos with it turned on though. xD
