TIL that DayZ runs much smoother on Windows 10.

Personally didn't feel a performance increase at all, but maybe that was because my Win 8 was allready optimized by myself to the maximum (unparked cores, Razer GameBooster, Graphics Card Power Savings Mode deactivated etc.)

 

however, Windows10 seems to have a lot of bugs with other games besides DayZ, and i had to fiddle around with Battleye not initializing and installing after switching to Windows 10, so be warned

 

also another warning: do not use the Teamspeak overlay plugin while playing games on Windows 10, i personally almost shredded my ears and headset with that

as soon as i started a game there was a loud crackling sound in the headset, folowed by the game crashing (Planetside 2, DayZ, WoT)

But if I do that I cannot upgrade my other machine (for free)? I have not seen them advertising that. It says: get Windows 10 for free - not: on only one machine. Is that confirmed, or did any of you update multiple machines (for free). It seems like Grimey Rick is running multiple copies.

 

Also, I've checked it out a little bit and you might wanna go for custom installation to fiddle with those privacy settings. As Win10 is by default gonna watch your surfing habits and report them back to base. And then you will be sent flower printed toilet paper and stuffed unicorns, because Microsoft decided that's what you want from life ;)

That's not what we are talking about at all. He was saying that you can only upgrade your version of Windows 7 or 8 to 10 on one motherboard. Meaning that he couldn't upgrade now and then transfer the OS to a new one later. I'm not sure that he's right about the specifics of all that, but either way no one meant what you thought.

I'm not sure exactly how it's supposed to work, but I have a legitimate copy of Windows 7 Ultimate and a legitimate copy of Windows 8.1 Pro. I was also part of the Windows Insider Preview long enough for Microsoft to give me a free copy of Windows 10 Pro, which is what I'm using.

When I installed Windows 10, I just downloaded the installation tool from their website, installed it, and skipped the part where it was asking me for a serial key. After the installation, I logged into my Microsoft account and it activated itself for me -- on both of my systems.

TL;DR:

I installed Windows 10 on both of my computers simply by logging into my Microsoft account after installation. It seems that one serial is good for multiple computers that are linked to your Microsoft account.

(I didn't read the whole thread, so that might not be what people were discussing.)

I guess I'll try it on my webbook and if it does anything better than Win7, I might consider switching the rest of my systems too. Is it necessary to format your drive or can you do an installation, while keeping old files? I have a lot of stuff I don't really wanna backup, and as far as I remember you can just install the new system without losing personal data. Correct?

If you own a retail copy of Windows 7/8 and upgrade to Windows 10, you will end up with a retail license. Meaning you can change your motherboard. If it's an OEM license and you do the upgrade, it remains tied to your PC.

I upgraded from 8.1 to 10, but found some compatibility issues with my installed software.

So I used the media creation device to make an ISO and did a fresh W10 install.

Definitely feels smoother in DayZ than W8.1.  Though my wife is still running Windows 7 and seems to plays with the same smoothness.

( I also forced the upgrade.  To hell with waiting for microsoft. )

Mine has been doing that as well, I had to move it to a built in USB port.

 

Also Ive had issues mapping mouse buttons, but apparently a driver is coming to fix that issue.

After the upgrade my sound was all screwed. An alert popped up every 3 seconds announcing that I plugged or um-plugged an audio device. un-plugging headphones had no effect. 

 

A complete un-install and re-install of the audio divers fixed it.

 

Other that than all was well.

Tomorrow I will finally have some time for myself (theoretically have holidays and Steak my girlfriend wants to spent it with me.) - so I will be spending time assembling my new Gaming PC I now had for well over 1-2 months.

 

Along with it I shall be trying Windows 10, seeing as I have unlimited licenses anyway, I may as well. I will be strictly using this for gaming while still having my workstation at the same place, so I will be running everything at the same time, just having to switch PC's on one monitor from time to time. It will be glorious and the best way to try.

The reason that there is an upgrade (free for genuine win 7,8 users) and a clean install is that Microsoft hopes to catch many people off guard in the confusion of what exactly entitles to a clean install and an upgrade. 

 

Unbeknownst to users, currently the ONLY way to get a free upgrade is if you upgrade your Genuine windows 7, 8, 8.1 to Windows 10. With a clean install, you cannot uprade your Windows using a Windows 7 or 8 serial. I personally clean installed Windows 10 and used a unused Windows 7 Pro key on it which did not work. 

 

Upon further review it seems the free Win 10 upgrade is only for those who actually upgrade (from windows 7,8,8.1) and enroll in the insider preview Win 10 testing (within the deadline in July 2016) to receive a genuine Windows 10 copy. Having a genuine copy of Windows, clean installing Win 10, then attempting to enter a Win 7,8 key WILL NOT WORK.

 

Hopefully this thread will be brought to light to those who do not know this.

So if you have a copy of Windows 7 Starter, Home Basic,Home Premium or, Windows 8 Windows 8.1 on your PC, then upgrading will give you Windows 10 Home. 

Windows 10 Pro replaces Windows 7 Professional, Windows 7 Ultimate, Windows 8.1 Pro, and Windows 8.1 Pro for Students.

If you feel paranoid about Win 10 turn off all the cortana stuff etc and youll most likely be about as "safe" as you were with win7.

 

TBH your mobile phone and facebook tells most organisations all they need to know about you.

I did a clean install... kinda, sorta anyways.

I did a complete rebuild of my pc  a few months ago and at the same time a clean WindowsXP Pro install.

Then, using a Windows8 Pro keycard, upgraded to 8 and did the free 8.1 upgrade, installed the 2 programs I use and Steam/Dayz. 

This was done over a 2 day period.

 

So my windows was about 4 months old when I did the upgrade to 10.

95% of what I do, I do on Linux. I keep windows for 2 apps I like and Dayz. (I call it my WinDayZ box) but.... I do like Win10. It's actually not bad at all and a huge improvement on 8.

If you disable the creepy stuff in privacy settings then Microsoft aren't actually collecting any more data than Apple and Google do already.

 

I don't doubt that there will be "fixes" for the amount of data that is forwarded to Microsoft further down the line either...

Dear Lok,

I don't use ANY social network (no facebook, no twitter, nothing. Why should I?) Well, I watch documentarys on youtube and since google force me to use google+ just to make more profit off I don't even have an account there. Yes I use whats app, to keep up the contact with my mindless friends and women BUT it does not have any access to my Photos (I don't even have any photos off myself on my phone and there are not ANY photos of me on the internet, neither any "electronic" got one from me), contacts (I need to add the number :) ) and of course not for my mic.

 

About the being paranoid part,  I don't have any reason for that. Yes you are right I use windows 7 but on my second  laptop (I have NOTHING on there just; Dayz SA Game, google search history from a encrypted vpn connection :)! and a small bitcoin wallet. nothing more) On my main big Computer I use Linux. 

 

Yes you are right, those "electronics" can watch me play dayz, watch me youtube docs, yes they can even see me watching netflix on hacked accoutns and there is a chance that my phone company can record my phone calls and dear facebook inc. can watch my messages on whats app.

So please higher your standarts, not everyone is a mind and brainless US citizen who doesnt give a single fuck about his privacy/freedom.

I had Windows 8.1 installed with all the updates, current drivers and bios up to date. I installed Windows 10 and other then removing some of the crap that comes with it, it works well. Personally, DayZ and all my other games ran very well anyway and don't appear any better now with Windows 10. I think the vast improvement you saw was from simply formatting your HD and starting again.

Or perhaps Windows 10 makes much better use of my processor (i7-5960X) that Windows 7 had a few known issues with. My Windows 7 install was only a few months old; it's doubtful several months of use would've made such a big difference after a format. Besides, DayZ is installed on a RAID 0 SSD array of two 1TB Samsung drives.
