I usually have a lighter and some change.

Random items would be cool if we are to have items. Two from a pool of fairly low level stuff:

string, rags, torch, can opener, battery, matches, pocket knife, map etc - items like that.

I can only speak for myself, but it is rare that I have nothing in my pockets; even inside my own house. Wouldn't be caught dead without a working but lighter and my pocket knife.

My keyring has a tiny LED flashlight on it which is actually pretty bright. You can open bottles and cut carboard with your keys. If you are not afraid to work at it you can slowly saw through things with the right keys, I had cut one just for sawing when I worked at a place where I cut keys. ;) I used to always carry a lighter, typically the windproof ones.

My car is way worse. I tend to have a duffel or other carrying bag in there, often old clothes in case I go somewhere and need to get dirty. Gloves, boots, and winter gear. In Summer that means a hoody. First aid kit + extra stuff I like to have like a barrier for mouth to mouth, extra gloves, baby diaper(slap it around a limb and pull it tight then use the little sticky tabs to hold it, instant large bandage that doesn't leak), and more. I no longer have the wood axe in there, but there is a large knife, some rope, bungee cords, and a collapsible shovel.

If I crashed someone out of the way I could survive for a bit, possibly even hike out of there.

Is that really what you keep in your pocket? What do you keep a string for?

I prefer this vs Rust where you just spawn with a giant shlong.

I spawn with a giant shlong in every game I play. :(

Cool, I definitely approve. I get to keep my t-shirt and I'm not granted a good pvp weapon as soon as I find a cattle prod or stun baton which are common as mud. Still wouldn't mind random spawn gear, though, just to add a bit of variety. Green shirt green jeans freshspawns is pretty boring.

That's a bit disappointing.  IMO the flashlight was the perfect unobtrusive tutorial for how to play.  You combine the battery and learn how to combine/craft.  You put it in your hands and learn how to do that+raise/lower a "weapon" etc.

Tearing up your shirt also served the same purpose, and created an interesting dilemma off the bat.  I always tore mine up immediately, but it does offer a decent amount more protection than not if you don't.  There's also the risk of it getting ruined before you could use it as a bandage too.

In any case, I thought both those things were a nice way to familiarize players with some of the mechanics.

But the problem with ppl exploiting graphics to see better in the dark has not be addressed yet. Therefore it makes the flashlight in general virtually a useless tool completely for the time being. Im hopping maybe with the new engine this gets addressed. As of right now ppl were pretty much just dropping the flashlight every time they spawned with a new character as it pretty much only took up space inventory for something more useful you could carry.

Starting gear has always been confusing to me. Right now, I have my wallet, car keys and phone on me which are almost always on me. Why don't we have a phone? They have flashlights and everyone has a phone.

Better yet, why not randomise the start gear factoring starting with absolutely nothing - there's no reasonable argument not to do this as long as the random things are reasonable.

Personally I'd set it to 50% nothing, 50% random item. Everyone starting with the same gear just seems to be stupid to me.

LOL but think of the crap you'd have to go through to get through the night - much more fun and most people are only going to join day servers anyway. Start gear should be random from a pool and a chance of nothing too - consider this - when you start the game and you have 2 pockets and ur stone knife is in one. What's going to win over the can of beans or the glow stick? It's useless and you'll find 20 in your travels before night fall.

In fact, now I think about it, it's down right moronic to have it in there just because the original did. When a bad idea is shit, keeping it in for nostalgia is not a good idea.

It's time to drop it. ;)

When for example starting a new character on a private hive and its night a glowstick can help you a lot. At least when 0.57 hit stable and the only servers were night the glowstick was a gift from gods :D Indeed many people just find a day server but that is kinda sad, they don't get to experience the different environment in night. And they don't get to be scared by bushes, their own shadow or the moon. I did. Maybe im just a pussy.

This is why you make it mundane stuff. Here is a list of things not worth suiciding over (and why suicide, they're that dependent on one thing they can't live - that's a pussy right there)

Can opener - rare

Glowstick - common

Nothing - common

screw driver - uncommon

wrench/spanner - uncommon

Can of food - common

There's a list right there you wouldn't suicide for. Also, since we spawn on the coast, the stone knife is an instant get thing already - that's starting gear right there if u go get it and it's pretty powerful too (or was 4 months back).

I constantly have a can opener in my wallet, at least one knife and a flashlight on me and normally a gun and 2 mags and a TQ as well. Things that wouldn't survive being washed up on a shore, probably my cell phone.

Incidentally my EDC pistol has a pistol light on it as well.

I find it rather funny that the guy in DAYZ spawns with a chemlight or a flashlight and nothing else. True a tourniquet may not be useful for most things in DayZ and spawning everyone with a pistol could make things sporty but the fact he has what amounts to nothing is a little silly.

No can openers. Starting with one, even if it's extremely unlikely, would confer a massive advantage. Spawning with something that can open cans - like a screwdriver, is fine but an actual tin opener would be too powerful.

Random clothes would be nice. Should provide no more than 4 inventory slots which would provide a decent variety of starting clothes. Jeans + t-shirt, Canvas pants vs t-shirt, tracksuit, prisoners uniform, etc. Should also be a chance to spawn a hat, and shoes should be random too (within a set of variables). Could also be a small chance to spawn certain special items, like a respirator or a chest holster.

So we should base the survivor on what you carry, or what most people carry around with them in real life. Why on earth do u carry a gun around with you - are u one of those weirdo people that has all those beans in his basement? I forgot what you call them....

Just showing that different people carry different stuff, it isn't everyone who carries a rag and a chemlight. You apparently washed up on the shores of a deserted island during a zombie apocalypse, it is  a fair bet your character would have some survival gear on them but everyone has identical spawn gear? No. Even if you don't want to go the can opener route I know plenty of people, white and blue collar, who carry Swiss Army knives or even Leatherman or such multi tools around with them. Hell 5 minutes with a can and a piece of concrete and you can open it.

Oh and why not carry a gun IRL? What is your plan if you are the victim of a violent attack? Give in? Die? Run away and hope the people with guns get there in time to protect you? I don't know where you live but I'm willing to bet violent crime still happens there, even if not on a large scale. As a responsible, law abiding citizen why should one not be prepared and equipped to defend themselves and their loved ones if they need to? It happens that I live in a country and city where the violent crime is pretty high. It is silly not to be prepared.

Straight out the mouth of the NRA rule book. Europe doesn't have an issue with guns and we don't want them, thanks. What's your plan - to kill another human being - glad that's so easy for you to think u can do, murderer.
