What is it that drives you to play DayZ a lot?

Recommended Posts

Personally, I dip in and out of DayZ, I've not played a proper session for a few months.

I can't quite pin-point why, I mostly just get sick of walking or running around in the woods with little to nothing eventful happening.

I notice though that a lot of people here (I know you're going to get a biased perspective on these forums) seem to play the game very frequently. What is it that draws you in and makes you want to play DayZ day in day out? I feel like I must be missing something, or maybe not, maybe I'm just burnt out on the game.

^i feel this way exactly. It was great when it came out, and still is, but you really devote quite a lot of time in order to have a good time. No doubt however, that i will be dropping a lot more hours as large features are added.

When they premiered new infected AI and doubled the infected on the map I went from playing 1-3 hours a day to 6-10 hours a day, so I guess the short answer is, killing zombies.

Otherwise, I am fascinated with the development process and will play the experimental builds to try new features and content.

When persistence and base building work well, I will also play more to maintain a camp/base.

I really like a good scary zombie shooting challenge like Resident Evil 4 mixed with an apocalyptic survival experience... I try to imagine so much of the empty places we see now crawling with infected!

I'm not sure what keeps me coming back, its a mix of player interaction (good and bad), the anticipation of a firefight, not knowing who or what is around the corner and the threat of losing my gear if I get caught slippin. I've only played a few games that kept me coming back for more, Dayz, Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies. Some games just have that appeal, sure I get burnt out but I just couldn't stay away from those 3 games.

Hell I still play a SWG emulator and a UO emulator, both games are very dated( UO being the first major MMO) but the friends I've made playing those games keep me going. Its weird, I've been gaming since the late 70's/early 80's, played and beta tested most of the major MMOs but I just couldn't justify putting time into some games because they lost their luster. Maybe I'm just a sucker for punishment

Seeing what changes are made and what improves (and what gets botched) in the dev process, I especially enjoy if it becomes a real grind to survive.

Also, as a mainly PVE/defensive shooter type of player I've slowly learned to really enjoy the KOS'ers on servers.  I've been popped enough times to know that he's always lurking, every moment, and you always feel like someone has a scope on you.  We love to hate him but that distrust of ever other player on the server makes the game far more dangerous and thus more rewarding to simply survive.

I personally play on DayZRP. The interactions and gameplay there is MUCH, MUCH better.

But I play DayZ with friends to have fun. I mean, its a video game. We get together, grab a few AKMs and pvp down in elektro. Or start a farm in berizino and snipe zombies and handcuff bambi's.

You just gotta do

the promise of difficulty that doesn't derive from bugs or clumsy interface choices.

Honestly? I should have got a Box 1 in the performance appraisal for my job this year. I did all the planning for the UK General Election and did it well.

But I got a Box 2 because I stay up all night playing this awful game and thereby arrive a bit late every day. It genuinely sucks, and I have no idea why I do it. I really think I just need to suffer somehow.

so it's your fault  ! ..

... and I was wondering how the UK could be so mistaken ..

I actually really like the hours or even days of nothing, then when it does it's so real. Once stealth worked junior and I were working down the coast uncontested by the ai then we had an "interaction" gone bad. We killed the guy but the adrenaline kept going well after.

Looking forward to more and better zombies when junior and I stopped playing stable we could just use stealth and coordination to clear a town and loot it without fear.

Once I get fully geared I go sit in a high traffic place and wait for other gear players. I'll either snipe them or stalk and engage them depending on the rifle I have.

Mostly it was the making of my character and his "upgrading", just to die in style.

I also find walking around the woods helluva relaxing.

Once I am fully geared and super bored i just go to a high traffic place. There's usually players already waiting for me.

To keep things interesting I try and limit my kit. By this I mean every survivor I start will be of a certain playstyle. A cowboy with a repeater/magnum only,a city civilian with only a pistol grip shotgun. I also limit the major equipment like backpack, pant, shoes, etc. I make sure they are all things that fit the character. This is much more interesting and challenging than...Got to VMC/NW get military gear + automatic rifle. Helps keep it fresh for me.

Yup. Roleplaying is a great way to have fun.

When I play alone I like to be a farmer and only wear a bow and maybe a pistol for protection/hunting.

I do create a character but I haven't really tried out any role playing yet on DayZ. Most RP servers have way to many requirements...I am not making a Facebook account just to play on your server ;) Could be a good way to switch things up though.

I meant the way you are playing, 8bit_Survivor, is already role playing.

You don't need rules other people make.

You make your own rules and limitation and therefore the game more interesting.

I don't play on those "rp servers" either.

For me it's that every play is different. New encounters make it not feel stale, it's never the same twice.

I got a broken collarbone and some screws in it, broken ribs, bust knee = looks like 4-6 months off work

explains the "a lot"

hmm .. guess I could play some other game ?

i think it's the combination of boredom and adrenaline

You do the totally flat boring stuff, but all the time doing that you never know when the adrenaline will hit

alert, contact, action, death can happen anywhere for any reason

This boredom/adrenaline combination has to be something like the real life situation, right ?

xx

And the "You Are Dead" message is a lot less fun too.
