john5220 15 Posted December 27, 2014 Where do you go exactly? and if you go to the nearest village for food etc and a backpack where do you go after? somehow I think most people go to elektro? I am just trying to figure out how to play this game most efficiently. Tired if looking for food etc just to get killed or char wipe by a stupid server. Dagwood 680 Posted December 27, 2014 If you're new to the game, I recommend staying away from online maps and other shortcuts that are available on the intermets. When you spawn in, find a road that goes inland/uphill and follow it. Loot towns that you stumble upon. Get lost following windy roads through the hills. Loot more towns. A backpack is important for carrying things, yes. Early on, grab all the ammo for all the guns. You never know what rifle you'll end up finding first. Eat food as you find it. Most importantly, enjoy your ignorance while it lasts. Discovering things for yourself is much more rewarding than repeating what you watch on YouTube.
john5220 15 Posted December 27, 2014 yeah I remember I once reached a castle in the middle of nowhere. I still have the screenshot of it when I was ontop. Where I was even on the most populated server no one would ever find me I was like lost in oblivion, fun times till a glitch killed me :( sad part was I lost my beautiful SKS with a pristine Pu scope. Dagwood 680 Posted December 27, 2014 Those first few avatars are the hardest to lose, I know. Keep joining mid to high pop servers and just explore and learn the mechanics. When you get bored, head to the coast and get into trouble. There is no right way to play. Experiment with different styles and strategies. It will keep the game fresh. And please don't listen to the mouth breathers that will tell you not to get attached to your gear. That attachment to your gear/character is what makes dayz great.

Irish. 4886 Posted December 27, 2014 Ill drop a trade secret here.. I immediately loot shacks. If they are looted, I move inland right then and there.. if not, I loot more until I find looted buildings, then I move inland slowly towards the NW.

o5pr3y (DayZ) 77 Posted December 27, 2014 Depends on my mood.Maybe rip off my clothes and run around talking to people with a Borat accent, or loot the nearest buildings as I head inland.

cobaas@live.ie 62 Posted December 27, 2014 My first characters never made it off the coast...haha yeah, i remember the first time spawning in back in the mod, near elektro with a revolver, crawled on my belly through elektro and got killed by zeds within five mins haha, couldn't figure how the zeds worked at all! Great times though
StayAlive (DayZ) 169 Posted December 27, 2014 (edited) I drown or walk to the nearest city, while picking up weapon, food/water on the way. When I started playing Dayz i used to explore the inland, this i would recommendeveryone to do at some point. Right now though, it's much more interesting killingpeople at the coast or using them as target practise. Edited December 27, 2014 by StayAlive
St. Jimmy 1631 Posted December 27, 2014 I try to get everything out from the nearest town. Then if things doesn't look too good I'll go to some inner land towns/houses. After that it's berry picking time if I haven't found enough food.

Evil Minion 943 Posted December 27, 2014 The general travel direction is away from the coast unless I spawn in Svetlojarsk - then I head north to those little villages. Thats because Novodmitrovsk and Cernaya Polana have their own spawn points making them unattractive to visit as its likely they are already looted. My "objectives" in "early game" are:Get hydrated - the easiest one as you just have to find a water source and drink your fill. Can be postponed to keep some space in your belly for food. Get energized - depending on server and patch this might take some time. It's usually traveling with looting or gathering in between but you can also stick to a place and go for the framing/trapping way. Once you are able to hunt or fish it's easier. Get healthy - a combination of the above and "stay alive". If you can avoid taking damage it's easier as you only need to regenerate blood. Get a knife - the most basic sirvival tool. With the Stone Knife it's easy now but it used to be a pain in the ass. Get matches - it's the only way to make a campfire so you need a box to enjoy the benefits. Get a melee weapon - not the same as a knife as there are more effective choices available - axes, the farming hoe, brass knuckles or even a fire extinguisher. Get practical clothes - appearance is secondary here it's more about getting inventory slots and staying at the right body temperature. Protection is also a factor so a helmet migt be worth a try as well as keeping your shirt until you really need those rags. Get a backpack - the increased space is a great step forward and allows for more tools/supplies/materials to be carried making you much more flexible. Get basic medical supplies - nothing fancy but you will need rags or bandages for crafting or bandaging. Everything else is optional (tape+sewing kit is a more risky but working alternative). Get a working ranged weapon - it does not need to be a gun as it is more important to actually have some ammunition. A shortbow with five arrows does count while a M4A1 without bullets does not. With all those points completed I consider myself in "midgame" where I try to improve my gear, gather more supplies and get clothes that actually look nice. With the immediate need for specific items gone I am more flexible in my travels. The furthest I made it before having completed the first stage was the Vybor military base from an Elektro spawn (aided by a V3S I found on the way).
PhillyT 554 Posted December 27, 2014 I used to head directly inland. Really early on, I decided to make my home Polana. I roam between Polana, Gorka, and Dolina gearing up. HAving a "home" adds a lot. More than a few times I interact with people entering my city. I started the whole home thing in Zelenogorsk but found I rarely met anyone, and when I did they were server hoppers or those running the Path of the Warrior. In both cases, things normally ended in violence. In the Three Valley area you are more likely to meet friendlier players, normally moderately geared or relatively new but not super fresh or beginning players (they don't really think to come to Polana or Dolina). Now though I make a pit stop along the coast, looking for a row boat with all the sweet waterproof gear.
rickyriot 1009 Posted December 27, 2014 Run! That's the first thing, and I keep running until I know I am some distance from the beach. While sprinting I open my inventory and drop my torch (keeping the battery, after all a cattle prod is a useful low level weapon if found) and rip my t-shirt into rags. Now, I've not respawned on the beach since the craftable knife was introduced so I have a feeling that might change my tack a little.
Karmaterror 982 Posted December 27, 2014 ......Try to get off the beach ;)
Killawife 599 Posted December 27, 2014 The beach is long but I usually go to Elektro, cherno or solnichy, whichever is nearest. Not to pvp but to gear up.If I'm at cherno I go to the apartment buildings, then to balota airfield, Zelenogorsk, green mountain, veresnik, NW airfield, then usually die or go north. If I'm at Elektro I gear up, then either go north or east. Or south ;)If I'm at solnichy I always go north as the run south is so long and boring. I usually avoid downtown Berezino as its a deathtrap. Sometimes I go north of Berezino to Svet but mostly I sneak along the coast to the wreck and then to svet and then polana. After that it varies. I usually don't care much if I get killed within the first five or so hours of spawning so running inland immediately is not something I do. Its more fun interacting with people and the funniest moments usually happen when you are gearing up and don't have a lot of stuff yet.

VermillionX 78 Posted December 27, 2014 Walk up onto the road, look left and right, run for the nearest house/town that I can see, take everything of use in that town and leave, avoid Elektro, head inland at the first turnoff.
