Best overall pistol

Recommended Posts

i was wondering which pistol is the best for looting and combat? the 357 has saved my live 3 times now but that's only because its the only pistol I found that doesn't need a mag. how does this pistol compare to the other semi autos and the longhorn?

Pretty much, if you already have the .357 revolver, it isn't worth your time to pick up another, even if you have a magazine.

Really. Trust me. If you need 6 rounds to kill someone, 2-3 more will not make that much of a difference.

Today a guy with a mosin was chasing me and my friend and I unloaded on him and hit him at least twice with my trusty 357 but he had a press vest and some other crap. I got hit in the arm and it was fractured but a splint healed it nicely. he scampered off and I made it to gorka to meet some other guys. the guy popped off about 4 shots and was at about 20 yards away. how does the fire rate, damage and recoil compare to the other pistols? also the ammo is I think the second most common in the game. .22, .357, .308. I have I think over 60 rounds for it maybe 80.

Ok on hearing your reply i am not sure your asking whats best over all but most effective in combat. If what your really asking is the later then i would have to tip it in favour of the FNX more bullets faster fire rate = more damage dealt in a short space of time BUT its not a huge step above the 357 but it is alot harder to find ammo for WAY harder to use due to having to find mags for .

Best over all is the 357 why because common ammo ( although i actually find more .308 than .357) it does not require a mag so has the ease of use factor , has very effective iron sights( well i like them ) and it gives you the fire power to take 2 guys down very quickly if skill/luck are with you. Not to mention if they add a jamming mechanic to gun play then the reliability of the 357 will make it shine even more.....

Call me crazy i have become quite a fan of the repeater magnum combo ,and as i am still finding tons of 357 ammo it makes it viable (although i still like the blaze and the sks but sks ammo is rare now and the blaze having 2 bullets is less or more effective depending on the situation  i am in ( if that makes sense)

Overall, assuming ammunition, attachments, and magazines are readily available, the FNX-45 is probably the best all around. It's got a high dexterity, large capacity, great damage, and of course heavy utility with the unique optic and flashlight.

However, that's only on paper. All things considered, the FNX-45 and its respective parts (at least the suppressor, magazine, and MRD) are pretty damn rare. Add that to the fact that .45s are not the most common type of ammunition and the FNX becomes really difficult to sustain.

Generally the most practical sidearm would be the Magnum, as it has high damage, does not need a magazine, and .357 rounds are really common. With the addition of a speedloader, it also reloads pretty quickly. Unfortunately, the Magnum is one of the slowest-firing sidearms and has a small capacity (6 rounds). Still, it makes a great all-around weapon and works for pretty much anything but high-intensity combat.

The rest of the sidearms also have their niches;

  • The Amphibia S is an excellent silent killer with a decent capacity of 10 rounds, making it great for zombie killing. However, it has really low damage and performs poorly in firefights, not to mention having a super rare magazine. It isn't too bad of a weapon but generally anyone using this will find greater utility in a Sporter-22, so it's a niche weapon at best.
  • The LongHorn is an awesome ranged sidearm, having a really powerful shot, built-in scope, decent accuracy, and an acceptable reload speed. The huge drawback to this is that it is a one shot gun, so it's basically hit-or-miss. While accurate, it doesn't really stand up to the Mosin or SKS, both of which are more accurate and hold more ammo. And, of course, the fact that the scope cannot be removed is also detrimental in some cases, rendering it nigh useless in CQB.
  • The CR75 works as a substitute for the FNX-45 when available ammunition is lower. Both 9x19 rounds and CR75 mags spawn more often than .45s and FNX mags, so it's far easier to supply it. However, it has lower damage and no MRD, and with an equal capacity it's only useful when you're interested in a larger ammo supply.
  • The 1911 still works well as a pistol, but holds next to nothing over the FNX with a lower capacity and only the flashlight. It's good for most of the same reasons as the FNX, but doesn't have the capacity or modularity to justify it being used over said FNX.
  • The derringer is a pretty useful backup weapon. It's not good for combat at all and is extremely short ranged (the gun itself is actually super accurate as of yet, but the sights are terrible and accuracy will likely be adjusted.) but the small storage size and two quick successive shots allow it to be useful, especially to someone who is low on space. Were it concealable or faster to draw it'd probably be a much better alternative sidearm, but as of now it's just a nifty little pistol.
  • The Makarov is alright being that .380 ammunition isn't too hard to find and it shoots incredibly quickly. I can't really justify it over the other pistols but it's not a bad weapon at all.
  • The P1... don't use the P1. It's really only in the game for variety, being that it has pretty bad sights, low dexterity, low accuracy, and low capacity. If you have no other options, then use it, but it really does hold nothing that the others can't do better. It does look cool, though.

I'm not at all convinced.

I've shot people multiple people multiple times in the chest with this magnum without downing them, similarly I've easily one shotted people as well.

I just don't think it's reliable in DayZ. When it comes to backup weapons in backpacks, I'll stick with my Sawed Off

I have played quite a bit with pistols in this game, and in my opinion it goes like this:

357 is king.  No clip, and the bullets hit the hardest.  No-brainer.

But lets assume all of them came with clips, and ammo was not a factor in deciding.

In that case, FNX45-1911-.357-CR75-Makarov/P1-Longhorn.

However, in reality the FNX is all but impossible to get your hands on.  750 hours in, and I have yet to use one.  Been shot by a couple, though.

The Longhorn goes all the way to the bottom, because all it has ever done for myself and my opponents is get us killed.  I am speaking from experience here.  I have been killed a couple of times using it, and I have killed more than a handful of people who were trying to kill me with it.  One shot, that's all you get.  If the guy is a decent distance away, you won't even kill him in one shot.  By then, you are getting return fire on your position, and guys are on their way to kill you, with weapons that fire more than once before requiring a lengthy reload.  I want to love it, but when the rubber hits the road, this weapon fails.

The 1911 and the .357 are brutal.  When you get hit by one, you usually go unconscious, if not outright dead.  Get hit twice, you are respawning.

I put the CR75 above the P1 and Makarov due to magazine size alone.  15 shots is a huge advantage.  They all down players about the same though, maybe with a slight nod to the Makarov, but nothing substantial.

All in all, if I were to take a sidearm, the .357 is my go-to pistol.  Abundant ammo, deadly power, and no clip.  6 shots is fine as long as you make them count.  A bonus is that the repeater uses the same rounds, and is fairly common.  This helps depending on how you are playing.

Edit- Oops.  Forgot the Derringer and the amphibia.  I cant't speak about the derringers power, but in special cases, I can see it being used.  2 slots is highly concealable.  Amphibia as a pistol is kinda weak.  The ammo is only good if you land headshots, it requires a clip, and the pistol itself is quite rare.  As a special use case though, it has potential.

FNX is the best of course. .45ACP and .357 share same damage, and FNX has larger mag and faster attack speed, so that's the reason devs made it rare. However, magnum is also rare now, since it is also a killer. Now the only prevalent pistol is makarov.....everywhere.......

how much more accurate or powerful is the repeater than the magnum? I dumped my repeater for my sporter .22 cuz it came with 3 10 round mags, a 30 round mag, and over 250 bullets. I liked the repeater though. I feel bad now. and I have an fnx mag and I found some fnx pistols a few times but that was way before the mag.

how does .45 compare with .357? I notice lots of people with vests and helmets so I thought the 357 would penetrate the vests and helmets since it is a high velocity pistol cartridge.

i have actually not found one magnum in the .50 patch, so i have been using the CZ75 and 1911, and they have both surpassed by expectations by a long shot, though i still prefer the magnum

oh and was I wise in trading the repeater for the .22 with all that stuff?

Nothing wrong with the .22 seeing you got a 30 round clip with it ... With that 30 round clip the thing is like a small caliber assault rifle( it has such a fast semi automatic action that you can pump the bullets out thick and fast if need be so its actually quite effective even if it does destroy all there gear due to pumping numerous bullets into them..

Just for info, suppressors don't work yet in-game.  So the Amphibia or a handgun with suppressor are as loud as any other firearm.

I really like the military version CR75 pistol if you find the magazine for it, but it's difficult.

It also have a silencer (supressor), but I don't know if it works propely related to sounds.

If you're lucky enough to find one, and mags, then FNX. Rounds are actually more common in o.50 (eg Myshkino tents).

Otherwise, yeah Magnum.

If I had my choice I'd go with the FNX because of the magazine capacity, the stopping power and the attachments. I haven't seen one in ages though. I often find the ammo and magazines at military areas but I guess the FNX is only spawning at crash sites now. Too bad, it was a lot of fun.

I also like the CR75 because of the magazine capacity. I can usually find one fairly easily but mags are a bit more difficult. Still, I usually will find at least one mag for it and the ammo is everywhere at military bases.

The .357 has saved my ass the most though, and I've used all 3 pistols in equal amounts (before FNX disappeared). Gotta love the stopping power of that thing. I recently got into a double barrel vs. .357 close quarters battle, with me having the .357. I came out on top. Barely alive maybe, but on top nonetheless. I guess you could attribute that to the .357 having three times the capacity of a double barrel but my point is that when it comes to firepower, it does give you a fighting chance against larger weapons. I like this gun but I don't find as much ammunition as others here claim to. But the .357, ammo and speed loaders are all fairly common so I think it's probably your best bet if you set out with the intent of finding a good sidearm.

I enjoy standing on a hill, staring down into Elektro, looking at my 357 in my hand (had that trusty gun my entire life) and thinking "This city needs another cleaning..." I then proceed to sprint down, screaming like a maniac, and killing everything I saw :D

FNX is the best, only reason to pick another pistol is if can't find a working FNX and ammo. As for being rare, I found half a dozen littering the Cherno docks not too long ago.
