How was your Day(Z)?

Recommended Posts

On that day halp swore himself he will never use a shotgun in this game again.

So having spent 2 weeks looking for a single Iz-43 shotgun until finding one yesterday, I just found 2 more within the last hour! I have to agree that the shotgun doesn't feel very effective against other players, on the 1 or 2 times I've had to defend myself with it, but I just love it for killing infected. :-)

Edit - oh yeah, re the compass. I once got a pristine, worn, damaged and badly damaged compass (i.e. one in each condition) stood facing South and all 4 gave a different direction. None of which was South. Also, for me at least, the sun is almost always due South, not even vaguely East or West!

This cant be? do you play WOT with the same nick? in that case we are in the same clan...

Greetings fellow Dinger, I am indeed the same one from WoT.

My thoughts eactly... it works so well versus infected yet it always finds a way to dissapoint me when i need to defend myself.

uhm..Good luck finding home  ? Btw, sun shouldnt go completey west anyway, I believe the sun rises towards SE and sets towards SW because the days are getting shorter in autumn/winter. Dont take my word for it, i could be wrong altho I read this almost every weak on reddit when some1 posts a broken compass :D

This all happened yesterday but I'll post it anyway.

Logged in outside of Berezino. I walked down the coast for a while, not seeing any players. Then, as I was walking, I saw a player running down the road. I hid behind a tree, watching him. Suddenly he walked into a bush and didn't come out. I sat there for about 10 seconds, debating what I should do. I figured he had either logged out or was AFK, but I was also worried that he was a bandit waiting for someone to walk by so he could shoot them. Finally I got up and walked over to the bush. When I got there, he started moving and drew his weapon. I already had my pickaxe out, so I hit him a couple times and killed him. I took his military boots and some of his food, and then continued down the coast. I ended up in Elektro, where I ended up being shot several times. I somehow managed to survive, and ran into a house. I stayed there for a few minutes, waiting for my blood level to increase. After a while, I left the house, and ran into a couple guys. One offered me food and ammo, which I declined, having enough of both. Then out of nowhere, the one that offered me supplies drew his firefighter's axe and killed me. I heard the other guy say "Whoa whoa why did you do that?" and the guy who killed me was like "Back up, back up!". I heard a bit of a standoff happening between them before I hit Respawn. I respawned outside of Berezino. I headed over there, and got some supplies. I was on the third floor of a building when a guy walked in, put a green jacket on the ground, and left without saying anything. I was a bit weirded out, but I took the jacket because it was better than my shirt I was currently wearing. As I headed to the bottom level and grabbed some tuna off a shelf, a guy walked in and was like "Whoa whoa, umm hey." I said "Hey", and he was like "Hey man there's a robber in town that I just escaped from. Just letting you know." then he left the building. I headed up to the area of the city that's on the hill. As I was running down the street, I saw a guy run around a corner. I headed around the corner that he just went around, but I couldn't see him. Suddenly I hear, "Hey buddy". I turned around, and the guy was approaching me. He then asked, "What kind of gun is that? I might have ammo for it" I replied, "It's a blaze" He was like "Ohh yep I've got some ammo for that I think". Suddenly out of nowhere I got shot in the head by a sniper. The guy I was just talking to said "Holy s*** holy s***, f*** f*** f***" then he said, "Please don't shoot me". I respawned outside of Berezino again. I looked to my right and saw a guy approaching me. He came up to me and was like "Hey man where are you headed? Berezino?" I said "Yeah I just got sniped by someone in Berezino so I'm gonna try to find my body". He replied, "Oh okay well I'm heading there too cause my friend's there, want to come with?" I said "Sure", so we both ran to Berezino. When we got there, we parted ways. I found my body, although most of my supplies were taken by the guy who shot me. I headed down to the lower area of Berezino, where I heard gunfire. As I turned a corner, I saw a dead new spawn. I then turned around, and ran right into another player. He said to me, "Why you shooting players? Huh, huh? Why you shooting people?" I said "Umm I haven't been shooting anyone." He mumbled something I couldn't understand, then he ran into a building. I headed into a small house and logged out.

I had a talk with Eno yesterday and wanted to check out the ´´Chez Eno'' place. I spawned south of the factory. Server was quiet, just 5-6 person online. So I thought to myself i should be safe for now and went check some of the buildings near the factory. There were tons of loot everywhere inside, got a pick to defend myself a book of matches and some clothes. I continued my journey further north through the orchard. Ate a bunch of apples til i was stuffed and resumed my trek to Brez. I was following the railroad tracks and saw something on the ground.. A crossbow! Sweet. A few minutes later, i arrived at brez and checked the first house to see if there was as much loot there then at the factory. Went upstair in a room and as i turned around a guy was standing in the doorstep. The guy had aa shiny fireaxe in his hands. Backed up a bit and the guy said no worry, i'm friendly and put his axe on his shoulder. I put my hands up to show i didnt want trouble as well. As i was typing some greeting to the guy he pulled out his shotgun and boom... You are dead.. sigh..

I respawned just north of brez and then went to Chez Eno to pick up some stuff Eno left me there. I knew he was looking for a cooking pot, so to thank him for the stuff he gave me i went to look for one. I knew i saw them mostly in big appartment building so i went in the ones in brez, to my satisfaction, found a cooking pot in the first appartment i went in and bring it back at Chez Eno. Putted the pot in stash and logged for the night.

Thanks Dave... I've had some steaks I wanted to cook but haven't been able to. I admit I HATE going into those apartments so I avoid them altogether. I must have run around them to every other building three times. Go figure.

ZH was home last night so he and I spawned back in by the NWAF. We were looking for some high cap vests and some gorka gear for him. I wanted my Paut-Rev Gorka ensemble as well... We already had more than enough in terms of weapons and ammo and I haven't fired a shot since that guy startled me in the server over a week ago. We'd come from the military base and found it surprisingly dry- definitely not worth the trip. We moved around the area with caution- as one naturally does whether there is 5 people in the server or 50. A LOT of boots- grabbed a sposn backpack and I think ZH found a high cap vest in the quonset at the tent camp on the north end. I did find a gorka jacket but that was promptly ruined by a single stealth zombie hit.

Sigh.

We went into just about every building we could find around the entire airfield... nothing. Figured we'd do a quick search around for crash sites since he'd never seen one and I've only ever seen the one from a few weeks ago with Schwab. We didn't go too far with it and headed back to the military base so I could track our way back home. I have a pretty easy to follow route that takes you from Berezino, along the HV lines that go to the west... through Novy / Stary Sobor... and then from the northern edge of Stary you catch a set of telephone lines that branches to the west and takes you straight to the base. From the base it's easy to shoot the gap between Vybor and Kabanino. To get home you just reverse the process and it's easy to do without a compass.

It is a lot of running and ZH needed to take a break from it for a bit but I wanted to unload some of my stuff (I'd found a first aid kit, still had a pumpkin... and a deer pelt I wanted to use to make a high cap vest equivalent.) I kept the pumpkin for later and went back to do a quick run around the office building. Just as I was entering some movement caught my eye to the west outside of the mill. 1...3...4...6?! zombies running around after something.

A couple days ago I'd seen the same thing happen with a cow taking up the pole position... I almost dismissed it thinking it was the same but in this instance I could see a blue drybag in the lead. He was on the run- weaving in and out of buildings and I wasn't sure if he had a weapon or not. I was leaning towards not. It was the first person I'd seen on the server and I wasn't going to let this guy get overtaken or beaten to death and lose out on my first interaction in 2 days. Out comes the trusty fire axe...

I ran over to him- he'd made his way to a cluster of buildings across a field to the west and I gained on him quickly. As I watched he'd managed to get all the zombies into a group, pulled an axe and just started circling them and swinging like a madman. I got into chat range as one after another dropped and I realized that a guy dressed the way I was running at him with an axe pulled out was going to look a wee bit aggressive... so I slowed to a jog and started calling out over the direct chat.

"Hey! Hey- I'm just coming to help... I'm coming in from towards the water. I have an axe drawn- looks like you're managing okay though."

He ran around in a couple more circles and dropped the last two zombies before answering. "Oh- hi... Did you see that?! Like 5 or 6 of them."

"Yeah it got my attention- thought you were going to need some help."

"I saw them all chasing a cow and then they veered off after me. Are cows new to the game? I've never seen one before." We were keeping our distance from one another but the tone of the conversation was very relaxed.

"They're not new- but they're also not all over the place. They are quite a few around Berezino- over by the construction site. Sometimes when they get chased they run through the city. On another note- you doing okay? I saw you took some hits... need any bandages or anything?"

"I'm actually starving-" Pop goes the pumpkin. He stuffs his face into that and I told him about "Chez Eno."

"If you need anything else I have a stash of food and other supplies that I can hand out and help get you on your way." He polished off the pumpkin.

"Nah dude... all good here. Now I'm energized- and it shouldn't be too hard to find some more stuff." I got the SLIGHTEST sense that he thought I might have been luring him somewhere and if the roles were reversed I absolutely would have felt the same. Memories of being lead into the woods west of Berezino with ZH and two randoms to light a fire and warm up one of their characters come to mind.

I didn't push the issue. "Okay- well you know where it is... if you need anything don't hesitate to come on by." Didn't see him again. I headed back to the "Farm" and got some things cleaned up around the green house. When you grow a lot of stuff you end up with an abundance of completely useless (currently) plant material and it ends up everywhere- looks awful. So I went about cleaning that up... had a full crop of pumpkins, zucchini and tomatoes... In the future that plant material can be used as fertilizer instead- which will be great.

Now then... have to go back in this thread to where Krazy elaborates on crafting leather.

Ahaha i remember when i first saw a bunch on zed running around trying to catch that elusive cow it was so hilarious. I waited til they were really far and shot the cow dead with the mosin/lrs and the zeds stopped right there. There were like 5-6 zed standing there in the field. I was laughing so hard that at first i didnt see that fresh spawn entering the field, all the zed turned around and chase him back in forest. I felt a little bad for the guy because by the time i got to him, zeds was feasting on his poor soul...

Didn't realized that the crafted leather vest was used he same way as the Hicap vest. That's interesting, i might try tonight to craft me one. On a side note, does anyone get raw meat or just is it just meat when u skin because everytime i skin an animal i don't get raw meat.. i can just go ahead and eat it without any cooking..

I said high cap vest in my post- but I meant assault vest... I think the leather is fewer slots than the high cap but more than (or at least as many as) the assault vest.

I use the leather one, its 10 slots and the high cap is 12 isn't it, did both backpacks but cant really see a reason of making the leather one seeing that it has the same amount of slots but is a lot brighter and therefore easier too spot. Made a leather jacket as well but that one couldn't handle rain at all and my character got wet instantly when it started to rain... The west is awesome tho, wish you could use spray cans on them tho, its a bit bright.

Did do a fire yesterday and cooked a lot of meat, where/how do you find the rocks to make a proper fireplace? Is it true that i actually have to use a pickaxe or is there another way? not that keen of carrying one around

to find rocks u just need to go on a rocky ground (or the beach) and look down you will be able to search for stone. Might need a couple of search to find one. You need 8 to make the fireplace but they can stack in your backpack.

So I've been playing dayz for a while now and have given up on the whole military gearing up fetish. I dont even really bother with military sites anymore and have banned myself from server hopping and decided to play private hives.

Ive been playing on a server called 'grumpy old men' (or something like that). Had a rally good game yesterday when I spawned into a town on the north east coast, quickly found a blaze some ammo and a speed loader clip. Then ran inland a bit and located an axe... I always try to find an axe! And all the other bits I needed, like food, water and a few rags, rain coat and back pack and some sticks. This is my normal load out, but I prefer an sks or mosin

So I then headed back to the spawn area and took up a position on the roof of a building overlooking the police station. From here I spent a few hours helping people in trouble. Sniping zombies chasing unarmed freshies and redressing the balance of power when I saw armed and geared up players picking on guys less well armed. It was great fun and the first time I've tried to play a 'role' as such trying to help people out!

All in all a great dayz until the server crashed :)

Yesterday something happened that completely surprised me. I came upon Vybor base, having run all the way there from Topka. When i approach the base I hear a V3s approaching. I hide and see a guy jump out. I decide to steal the truck but i don't want to kill him so I just jump in an drive off, he runs after and shoots but my laughter is cut short when i get stuck on a rock. I have to get out and stick my hands up. To my surprise i am not shot dead right away but rather the guy is friendly and even gives me an AKM drum mag. He then tells me where theres a heli crash and offers to drive me there. Unfortunately the v3s is stuck so we cant, but still he doesnt kill me and I leave for the crashsite.

 Amazing.

Today I killed my second ever player.

But before I tell you about that, I need to give you some context.  I've now seen quite a lot of DayZ videos where players get hit in the head and knocked out.  i now understand, sort of and not that I would ever do it, why some fresh spawns will try and duke it out with fully kitted out players, even ones armed with guns - because one lucky hit is all you need to knock the geared guy down for a few seconds during which you grab his weapon, kill him, then loot his corpse at your leisure.  Actually, the fact that most geared players wear a helmet which prevents this from happening seems to have escaped the attention of the sort of player that does this and I find that very amusing.  However, if you don't have any head gear you are vulnerable to a single lucky or well aimed hit.  Point one to note!

I've also seen, and experienced, new spawns trying to attack me even though I was a new spawn myself and then, when I have run away, they have chased me relentlessly, for miles sometimes.  2 stand out instances are the guy who chased me all the way from Kamy to Solnichniy shouting "I want to give you Ebola" non-stop.  I replied "Sorry, you want to give me a bowl of what?" then he asked me where I was from (still chasing me) and I, of course, replied "Chernarus" and asked him the same question.  He said he was from "the nuclear disaster at Chernobyl"  Fine, I can play this game WAY better than you my friend.  "Oh really?  What year was the disaster then?"  "erm...19...49?" came the hesitant reply.  Sigh..."Mate, if you are going to come up with a back story for your charcter, at least research some of the key facts" I berated him, applying additional insults based on his overall lack of preperation and failure to fully immerse himself in the whole RP experience side of DayZ.  One must take ones simple pleasures where one can ;-)   Fortunately, as we continued to run down the road I spotted someone coming the other way who was armed with a fire axe and I yelled for him to please take this freaking nutter out for me please, which he duly did, as I kept on running.  The other experience was actually last night, where another feckless maniac kept trying to punch me.  I kept him at bay with a sledgehammer, my only possession, but he kept ducking out of range as I swung.  The stand off continued until i tricked him into backing away only to put the sledgehammer on my back, turn 180 degrees and leg it.  I made it to a small cluster of buildings with maybe 10 metres on him.  I vaulted a low fence, laughed as he smashed into it, then jinked my way through the town, twisting and turning, jumping fences, running for walls then breaking at random angles, etc..  I lost him within 30 seconds and got away.

So, my default tactic for dealing with hostile randoms is to run because I know that I can lose them.  But what if I am not alone...?

For something different I joined a random, high pop, persistence off private server.  I'm in Kamy and the police station is just in front of me.  Ok...let's see what DayZ has in store for me.  On the way to the police station I grab a hatchet from a shed then round the corner and oh look, an AK-74 sitting on the roof of a Police car.  No mag of course, but still, just lol.  Grab that (even though I'll never use it) and raid the police station.  I clear the ground floor and am just about to go up the stairs as another fresh spawn enters the building.  We both back off in surprise and he opens comms. "Don't kill me please, I am friendly" he says in very good English but with a German accent.  "No worries man, you don't kill me either, ok?" I reply.  Whilst I quite fancy the idea of hooking up with a random player to see what happens that old DayZ "trust no one" thing kicks in and I find myself saying "Ok, nice to meet you, I'm going to go off this way - see you" and I run out of the side door.  I hear him reply "ok, bye!" and then I'm out of there.  Kamy's not that big but it's still a decent enough size that I'm happy to continue looting the North side of the town even though there's potential danger in the area - besides, I got quite a good vibe off him.  I'm actually mentally kicking myself for not trying to play with this guy when I find a Longhorn and fire axe.  Right, I don't need the hatchet and I don't want the Longhorn - let's see if I can make a friend.

I find German guy in a house near the police station, ask him if he wants the hatchet or Longhorn and drop them on the ground between us, then back away.  He's clearly both surprised and suspicious - this obviously hasn't happened to him before but he thanks me graciously (a very polite man!) and takes them.  Then, for some reason, I again back away.  Argh, why can't I just ask him if we can stick together??  What the heck is wrong with me that I just cannot trust someone, even when I am playing what is effectively a throw away new spawn character?!  I return to "my" end of town to loot some more and within 30 seconds I find a Mosin.  Right, an AK-74 might be great and all that but..yeah, let's be honest and practical here - I ditch it and grab the Mosin.  I move into the street and see 2 players doing the dance of death - my German friend is being attacked by a new spawn.

Remember my rule for dealing with hostile new spawns?  That's right, run.  But that's when I am alone and now I am not.  One lucky hit from the maniac will be enough to incapacitate my friend and then it's game over for him.  The maniac isn't using comms, nor is he responding to anything we say.  It's late, I'm tired and I don't want my gaming experience to be ruined by a total f**kwit.  Mainly though, it pisses me off greatly to see a decent guy having his game ruined.  Frankly, it's rude and I do not like rude people.  The fire axe comes out and I launch myself into the melee.  The maniac takes an axe to the body and starts bleeding.  I just stand there, swinging my axe in a slient, cold fury.  He takes another hit and drops to the floor.  I check his pulse, see his name is Sacha and then open comms.  "Sacha.....you're a pratt."  He's never going to get up again but I bury my axe in his head for good measure.  My second ever kill and I don't feel an ounce of regret over it.  The gene pool is a little cleaner now, if ony for the next 30 or so seconds. ;-)

The German thanks me for my help and finally the ice is broken - we've got a common bond now, a shared experience that ties us.  He asks if we can run together and I gladly say yes.  Finally!  We loot the rest of Kamy together, sharing loot and gear equally.  He clearly can't believe that he's met someone who not only doesn't want to kill him, but is actually asking him what he needs, pointing out where stuff is and sharing.  We make it halfway to Msta when I have to go.  I really don't want to but my time is up.  I drop my Mosin and Fire Axe for him to take and log off.

Today was a great DayZ :-)

well yesterday could have been a tad better, had the game glitch away my server list "favorites" so i actually don't know where i pitched my mil tent stuffed with equip  <_< Then later on after going thru the NWAF and looted a Ammo box "p" "finally" and two "p" round mags for the AKM i then ran to Grishino to check the police station and then my game crashed.... in middle of zombie infested Greshino..

As expected next time i started up i was standing on the coast "Cherno" and seeing that i have my tent in the northern parts "if i ever find the server" i will have somewhat of a run to do.

As a sidenote i had the game crash on me three times yesterday and before this patch i never crashed once, is the game less stable now?

There are some issues with the 0.54. In case you haven't, delete the startup parameters (-nosplash), it seems to help some people (personaly i still run -winxp -malloc and some others).

Then, for some reason, I again back away.  Argh, why can't I just ask him if we can stick together??  What the heck is wrong with me that I just cannot trust someone, even when I am playing what is effectively a throw away new spawn character?!

Haha, I was experiencing the same yesterday. Trust issues seems to be the thing in dayz lol. I get your feeling all the time! Not to mention, how many times i bump into a survivor just so we say "hi" to eachother and stare in akward silence aka "is he gonna shoot me now?" "now?" "how about now?".

Yday I met a girl survivor three times. I was checking the new lakes than headed toward Khelm. Im thirsty so i drop my sporter in a bush nearby and take a sip. At that momment a survivor runs pass me.  "friendly, friendly". Wearing a pink raincoat she indeed looked like she's not looking for trouble, but yknow, girls of chernarus are usualy heavily protected by their TS buddies and used as baits :D so lets not get all too friendly.

Second time i saw her in Khelm. I see her carrying an SKS - probably no ammo. I was already double carrying my guns so i took a risk of giving her a blaze. We could have just grouped up but i get that weird feeling of VOIP company again so i head my way.

I continued my route towards Krasno thru forest. I spotted a chicken and just when im about to shoot it some1 appears from behind.

Same voice. I started laughing in VOIP, like, no way it's you again. She offered me some shotgun ammo which i didnt need and soon after ran off. Pretty sure she didnt come after me for some shotgun ammo knowing i have a 30rnd sporter, more likely she got her trust issues going and backed off :D

Ran to Krasno where I immidiately spotted a guy with a cowboy hat & no backpack. Friendly encounters always soften me up (baaad baaad thing!!!), so i just assume he's friendly.

I check the plains for any animals as he finaly catches up with me on Northern part of the town.

Hidding behind a house he asks me if im friendly. I replied "but ofcourse fellow survivor, I've seen you entering the town before you even got that drybag&replaced your cowboy hat. No worries"

Got my trust right there. He came out and asked me to group up. We headed towards Chernaya Polanas car dump. He would hardly say a word but this time im just gonna blindly trust him.

Server restart.

How was my Dayz journey? I have been playing 40 hours now. I finally found military base and gear up. Got 3 pistols and AK + Camo suit. I start to run other city but get lost. I run literally in forest one hour. I was thirsty because I drink all my water when I was running there. When I finally found small city I saw 2 zombie. What happen next? One big Dayz logo pop up in my screen and all what I can do is wait. I hear how zombie hitting me hard and when that dayz logo disappeared I saw all is grey. One hit more and I was dead. Next was big rage quit and delete game. Hf

The private server Eno and I like to play on was down all day yesterday so I hopped on my public char and took off.  I was decked out in all green (green rain coat, green hunter pants, green beanie, and hunters backpack) with a magnum.  I am hoping to avoid pvp on this character (for now) and to try the lonely survivor role out a bit.

I logged in within the apartment complex north of Cherno.  I proceeded to build a fireplace with 8 stones (upgraded) and put the raw cow meat into the fire.  It quickly became ruined -- I thought we didn't need a pot if we upgraded the fire?  Anyways, so I decided to go find a pot and cooking stand, but decided to avoid Cherno and went north of Balota airfield in hopes of looting the towns west along the coast.  I made my way past Balota airfield, checking things out and saw no movement.  I climbed the large hill (west) overlooking the airfield and was able to take in the view of the prison island.  I sat down to relax and admire the view before I realized that there could be a sniper aiming at me seeing as I was out in the open, so I quickly hustled into the treeline and kept moving west.  I found a pot and cooking stand in the first town (yay) and found a mosin in the police department which I quickly painted green thanks to spray paint in the nearest shed.  I realized that my long range scope was missing from the update (I had been using it as binoculars previously).  So I couldn't attach it to my rifle (sniffle).  With that, I found the new compass in the next town over and decided to head north to try out my new cooking stuff.  I checked the compass and it seemed to be working correctly.  I dropped it and picked it back up several times to make sure it didn't goof again.  It did not change at all thankfully.  I then logged off once I safely made it into the treeline and am anxious to complete the cooking task now that I believe I have all of the items.

I really want to team up with krazypenguin.  I love your stories!

Hf

Why did a logo pop up?  Did you change some video settings?

My thoughts eactly... it works so well versus infected yet it always finds a way to dissapoint me when i need to defend myself.

I'm no fan of the default Izh, but I've killed more people with a sawn-off than with all other weapons combined, probably. Granted, I only killed maybe twenty or so in all, but still. Just point and click, or double-click if you want to be absolutely sure they're never getting up again. Forget aiming. Though this is primarily a defensive weapon, great for close quarters. It won't do you much good fighting at a distance (the default Izh does better at that). Even better if you can find a few snaploaders.

The gene pool is a little cleaner now, if ony for the next 30 or so seconds. ;-)

That wasn't you, was it Sacha? ;)
