pillock 850 Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) Farming is going to be introduced soon. However, it probably won't lead to us being able to eat vegetables, since they probably ought to take some significant time to grow, before which they will doubtless have been wiped by dodgy persistence mechanics that don't work yet, or else vandalised to destruction by some fucker who happens across your seed patch before it's ready to harvest. cartire 55 Posted August 22, 2014 The origin of the term vegetable is no longer viable. Its very simple actually. And this is the correct way to decipher between fruits and vegetables. Fruit - The part of the plant that contains the seeds. Vegetable - The rest of the plant to include Leaves, Stalks, Branches and Roots. So stuff like Broccolli, Celery, Cabbage, Potatoes, Beets, and so on.
BadAsh (DayZ) 1513 Posted August 22, 2014 Onions and carrots would definitely make sense to include. They would grow wild from abandonded vegetable gardens and keep well in the dirt, ready to be dug up using a hoe, spade or pitchfork. Some sort of cabbage I imagine wouldn't be out of place either.
Nocturnal (DayZ) 85 Posted August 22, 2014 strictly speaking, a vegetable is anything that's not basically a swollen ovary. Lol. Fruit sounds far less appealing when you describe it that way.
pilgrim* 3514 Posted August 22, 2014 (edited) The origin of the term vegetable is no longer viable. wtfThe current up-to-date term 'vegetable' as defined and used in our language is viable of course.Do people really have problems with " what is a vegetable ? "There is a perfectly good explanation of what is a "vegetable" in the sense you mean at wikipedia-vegetable In the section titled:Examples of different parts of plants used as vegetablesthere is a list of all the different parts of plants that can be used as vegetables. Amazing: leaves, buds, stems, whole-plant sprouts, tubers, roots, bulbs, fruits, rhizome, leaf sheaths, flower-buds ... all this stuff is classed as a vegetable if it is prepared and eaten as a vegetableI mean this "technically", and I also mean it in the completely conversational sense, and according to standard and accepted usage, and its universally agreed application in culinary vocabulary, ya know ? and it's precise dictionary definition, whatever dictionary you choose. here are some fun examples:broccoli are flower budsleeks are leaf-sheathsbrussels sprouts are budsasparagus are stem shootspotatoes are tuberscarrots are rootsonions are bulbstomatoes, peppers, green beans, and corn are fruits these are ALL used as vegetables Check it out. Enjoy yourselves. Now that this is cleared up, I agree with BadAsh xx Edited August 23, 2014 by pilgrim

Digging the ground with a pitch-fork is a ball-ache. You'd be better off using a machete or an axe, to be honest.

JPWiser 251 Posted August 22, 2014 Any fruit or vegetable not growing on a tree would be rotten an inedible anyways... I think it's silly we find pristine fruit laying around in the hot sun with no power anywhere...
Whyherro123 2283 Posted August 22, 2014 On a slightly related note, the "Three Sisters" method of agriculture is pretty much the go-to way of feeding yourself long-term in a TSC situation. Corn, beans, and pumpkins planted together in a big mound. The plants support each other, add nutrition to the soil, and provide all the the vitamins and minerals you need. Round out the system with potatoes ( a crop with substantial starch content, can grow in "waste land", where other crops cannot, and has an almost exponential population growth curve if you know what you are doing), and you have agriculture. I would like to see this implemented eventually. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three_Sisters_(agriculture)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Potatoehttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raised-bed_gardening
Katana67 2907 Posted August 22, 2014 Interesting, never thought about it! Some harvestable/growable corn, carrots, onions, potatoes, all that jazz would be neat! And yeah, though I don't really care that it's supposedly unrealistic to find fresh fruit (ostensibly, even though we don't know the timeline) some time after an apocalypse... I think food/drink needs to move markedly away from loot, and more into foraging/horticulture. A can of food/drink in a supermarket should be a very rare and lucky occurrence, if only for making horticulture/hunting/foraging a useful endeavor.

q.S Sachiel 470 Posted August 23, 2014 (edited) Lol. Fruit sounds far less appealing when you describe it that way. and most 'mushrooms/fungus' you eat are really the sexual organ (more or less) of the organism.mmmmmmmmmmmmmm fruiting bodies...Well, it's the same case when you put your nose in a flower really. Had a girl once that was shocked to know that flowers were sex organs, and became worryingly excited that 'bees are having sex with plants'. Such a sweet girl. She was also shocked to find that her father's horse didn't like eating chicken sandwiches and was a vegetarian. pillock 850 Posted August 23, 2014 I can see you have never grown your own potatoes. Forks are the best tools for harvesting root vegetables by hand. Bleh. I was being pedantic about the difference between pitchforks and garden forks. But it's not worth pursuing. Sorry to have bothered you.
