November Round-up

If you buy me some Prozac and rent me a house at Hawaii, I'll take your advice and gain a few pounds when I'm at it. It's a win-win situation :D

Or you look yourself in the mirror and realize that it is you who needs to take care of your own life :)

Oh, well.

You should rly stop imitating rocket as hes australian just because New Zealand and Australian flags look the same does not mean they speak the frikin same accent :P And also the jokes, make your own don't copy them, try not to make people laugh, you often do make people laugh unintentiönälly  (soz random finnish letter spree appeared?) Thats My young advice to an old guy like you, and I'm sure you will get yer standalone before 2014 and enjoy playing it even with a shitty job and rat infested home wut?

So I am curious what these failures might be on the test server. As of right now, it says that there has been 42/123. That is since the last update.

Sort of underscores several things...

- Rocket's silence is always met with dismay, and his information is always misinterpreted.

- Journalism is dead.

- People who don't follow the intimacies of DayZ's development have literally zero idea of what they're talking about.

this just in (http://www.reddit.com/r/dayz/comments/1qemns/i_dont_think_pc_gamer_really_understood_what/cdc2hyq):

I like reddit because it's a conversation. Because I feel like I can be wrong sometimes, and someone isn't going to splash it everywhere and keep trumping it out every time an article gets popped up.

I've learned a lot here, got some great design feedback (same with the DayZ forums, although I'm more of a lurker there).

It reaffirms to me, that someone who read the reddit thread probably got a reasonably good approximation of the real state of things. Someone who reads that article will probably walk away with the opposite. That says something about what and how we get our news provided to us, generally speaking.

yay!

This could have been avoided.

by releasing the damn game already

Or being just quiet :D PC Gamer made it sound like the client fps is 15 atm.

What? It's obviously rocket's poor choice of words that's at fault here, there are also more than enough players now who think the game will run at 15 fps

The Reddit thread titled, "I don't think PC Gamer really understood what Rocket said...", should be indicative of whose fault it is...

This is why we are not out. We need performance

We think we need a minimum of 15 FPS will 50 players, 2000 zombies, and 25000 loot items. Our latest tests have all shown some runaway systems in the code we have to tidy up. The variable synchronization system that was developed for work with the network bubble, is checking the variables very often. We're optimizing this. Also, there are many string comparisons. These have been refactored so references are used (lookup numbers) to speed up the process. things like animations etc... are generally recorded as strings - ArmA wasn't build to handle very large numbers of things so this has been a large area of optimization.

Can't blame PC Gamer (and  other major sites such as RPS, they published similar articles) for thinking that he's referring to actual 15 fps.

Talking of "fps" when referring to the server doesn't even make any sense to begin with

I had wondered if Rocket found any friendly advice from people who have already programmed zombies in the past.

DayZ likely has fans 'erwhere.

PC Gamers shouldn't have gotten their information from a reddit thread, but from the developers/company themselves. Yes, rocket wasn't very clear on that matter, but again I am hugely disappointed by today's journalism.

I know Finnish Race Driver accent (ain't speaking it though) and watched enough Australian Master Chef to know what that is.

I think you haven't ever heard a conversation of managing Arma server or something like that. Everyone is using term fps.

Neither does selective reading of a person's Reddit history (which, if you're going to use it as a source for your "journalism", you have to read more than one post), where he explains the difference between the server FPS and client FPS. That and the FPS is only one issue in the grand scheme of the report. They allege that it's been delayed, they incriminate Rocket for not giving a release date, and they make vast assumptions about the severity of the bugs cited in Rocket's original post. They also misrepresent what is and what isn't keeping them from releasing the standalone.

Likewise, these are journalists. Supposedly held to a higher standard of sourcing than the average person, whereby you actually have to confirm things rather than merely transmit them.

veryone is using term fps.

Everybody else, including gaming journalists, isn't.

They aren't journalists. They (most of them at least) have no formal education, at all. Gaming journalism is not taken seriously, even by their target audience. The only difference between us and them is that they get paid for writing articles.

He is a public figure and knows that he has to be very careful with what he says, he said as much beforehand

I also cannot seem to find his post in which he clarifies that the client does not have performance issues.

Quite the opposite actually. Among other things, he's recommending SSDs, says the client is not optimized for more than two cores, there are performance issues in cities and admits that having an optimized 64bit edition is unlikely because of the engine

It's cool that he's open and honest but he should not be surprised when stuff like that article happens
