First vs Third Person Discussion (Dslyecxi video)

Recommended Posts

1st all the way. I thought Rocket was making the anti hardcore game he wanted to make and not the easy game people may have wanted him to make. So i expect 3rd won't be an option. Or is this a fallacy.

i only ever play dayz in 3rd person..

remove the ability, you remove my coins from the table.

as has been said millions of times, if you dont like 3rd person, dont play there..simple.

but plz stop trying to tell others people HOW to play.

/endthread.

The argument "if you don't like it, don't do it" is a very simple response.  I don't particularly care about paying tax but i don't really have much choice.

Why don't you like 1st person?  Would you really not purchase the SA if it were 1st person only (i am sure it won't be btw)?

No one is trying to tell anyone how to play, but this video just tries to explain how 3rd person destroys realism, immersion and along with that, the tension that made DayZ in particular so great.

Play in 3rd because everybody else is (on those servers that enable it) which annoys me, but your damned if you don't.

The only thing I like 3rd person for is travel.  Gets a little boring when running long, straight distances, and I like to look at the sweet hoodie and motor bike helmet I am wearing (But not pants, who wears pants anyway?).  It also gives me a bit of a point of reference when using melee weapons on servers without crosshairs.  But Dslyexci's points are solid.  I always pop into first person when there is combat with guns, simply because the switch to using sights is less jarring when you are already in first person, and you don't have your character blocking anything that could possibly in front of you.

Not to mention, how are we going to enjoy the shiny new animations without 3rd person?

I'll never buy the "realism" argument.  DayZ was, is, and will always be a game to me.

I've played on 1P only servers.  The biggest difference with DayZ is you easily get stuck in doorways and other tight spots.

Didn't seem realistic to me at all.  Really bad "body awareness."

So 3P works better for me.

The big advantage with 3P is for snipers on rooftops looking over parapet walls.

Of course since DayZ isn't realistic enough to provide any well-concealed sniper nests, that can be looked at as a "realism" trade-off.

A lesser advantage is scoping out a building before entering.  Not a big deal at all.  Leaning in to peek in 1P has a high success rate.

It's just another way to get an angle.

But these are well known methods used in 3P, and so are the defenses.  Caution, listening for footsteps, etc.

Everything else is basically a wash.   The vid showing one guy looking at another player over a wall fails to mention the other guy can do the same, and actually had the advantage of seeing the approach if he was on his toes.  Another wash.

It really gets down to personal preference.  There's 1P servers out there for those who like that.

As usual Dslyecxi sums up the issue perfectly. Its all about risk versus reward. I really hope rocket is listening to the likes of him and CHKilroy more than he is to ones likes Frankie and Sacriel.

All that needs to be said to 3rd person players has already been said by the late great George Carlin.

Sacriel certainly wants third person to be removed, and I'm pretty sure Frankie doesn't like it either. They just use it because it's hard to find populated FP servers.

Seems like all the hardcore people want it gone.

i'd like to play 1st person only, but you cannot give up using 3rd when it's an active weapon like nowadays..SA should be 1st only..maybe add mirrors in houses..

That vid hit the nail on the head.

1rst person all the way. It's better for immersion. The game is much more intense.

3rd person is a just an exploit that everyone uses because it's enabled by default.   It takes the edge off and cheapens the experience.

3rd Person:   Just kick back and crack a beer and play some dayzeeeee, no worries bro I can see around corners and over hills, This is not very hard at all.  Look at my backpack ..so style..

1rst person:  OMFG did I just hear a zombie on the other side of that wall ??  Oh no someone is shooting at me... let me hide behind this large rock, which side is he charging from? (heart pumping)

I've always felt that first person felt a bit too tunnel-vision-like, so I usually run about in third person unless I'm in combat.

Assuming there is some way we can play with the FOV on the Standalone, then I would be happy for third person to be done away with. It would get rid of a lot of people who use third person just to extend their vision.

Just something people would have to re-adjust to.

I agree first person makes for a more immersive and exciting game play.

One thing that hasn't been brought up though is the more wobbly and bobbing camera movement in first person view compared to other first person shooters, which tends to make some people motion sick and nauseous, as I've been told, making them switch to third person.

Personally, I've never had any problems with this, but this more realistic camera movement is rather excessive indeed and the people who told me aren't the most competitive/exploiting kind of guys, so I'm sure this is a valid reason for some to refuse first person view.

You can reduce the head bob in the game settings. It's not even realistic, your eyes adjust to the movement of your body when running.

Third person cut is a must. Third person is good for demonstrating animations and some other stuff but it never should be enabled when you're in the server.

I really don't get the headache argument unless you get it in other games which just means you shouldn't play FPS like Battlefield, CoD, MoH, RO or Arma. In Arma you can turn the head bob off almost completely and then there's less or as much head bob than in any of those games that I mentioned.

/OK Rocket could enable third person in alpha because it's good for some bug testing.

To the Last 2 posts and everybody else who is experiencing the issue of headaches while playing in 1st person: there is a slider in your in game settings to drastically remove the "head bob".

Try it, enjoy playing the somewhat fresh "dayz 1st person" experience.

if BIS is say -  'OK guys, we stop this bullshit 3rd person view, is fantasy super power bullshit, look over wall and see impossible things, is destroy realism of game and we make mistake when we put this shit'

if BIS say this is make me feel too much excite   :P

but true thing is most server is 3rd person and most player is use 3rd person, is stupid to play first person when all guys use 3rd person wall hack system

Wouldn't it be more fair to say: if you don't like first person, don't play DayZ?

There is literally no valid argument left to support or defend third person other than "I want to see how much of a badass I look like" which isn't really a good argument at all. My favorite is how everyone keeps saying "if you remove third person then the majority will stop playing" but I still can't seem to find a singe point as to why that would be so I still will have to assume that it is just because people are to scared to actually play a horror game with some tension. The headache or nausea issue is something that should be fixed with FOV sliders and such and nothing that validates third person.

If you think there are some valid arguments to support third person please give them to me because I am seriously at a loss. :)

1st person only, for obvious reasons.

Tech reason would be 90% of clipping issues would become less evident.

I suggested servers run as a forced 1st or 3rd person only a while back, unfortunatly it was not well recieved.

Iron sights only while we're at it, I was somewhat shocked when I saw my first Dslyecxi video, he plays with cross-hairs !

I think he made a video about that as well, although it might have been another, not sure.

Don't worry, Dean considers Dyslexi a personal friend and he also now has access to the testing as well as the discussions surrounding that, the YT'ers don't.

My two cents:  3rd person view should either be removed or restricted to minimise the way it's used for exploiting, playing only in 1st person dramatically changes the tactics you need to use and adds to the game.  We now have a 3D model of the player and all of the gear in the inventory so checking out your new raincoat can be done there.

If some players decide they're not happy with that then they'll need to go and find another game, trying to make a game that suits everyone never works, tough decisions need to be made at the top in order to avoid DayZ becoming yet another game that tries to please everyone to maximise sales.  In those situations, everyone loses out.

The issue with giving players too much choice is that many choose the path of least resistence, hence the popularity of servers with silly amounts of starting gear and hundreds of vehicles.  The SA will be a more focussed/standardised experience and some of these decisions need to be taken out if the admins hands to avoid the watered down version of the game most people are now playing.

Hello there

Regardless of what I personally think, after some deliberation I keep coming back to that fact it should be a server side choice.

I often spout the phrase "User choice is key" and this should be no different other than the choice should be on the side of the Server Administrator.

I rail against 3rd person in general as it it often forced upon is as a primary play view, I angst about it to Fraggle on a regular basis.

As Boney stated earlier, Make it a choice and let the people decide.

Even if third person remains it should always be off in vehicles. There is NO argument supporting why it should be possible or has a place whilst driving or flying.

Anyways, third person is easy mode. Get rid of it! :)

I would like to respectfully disagree, at least a little.

I do like and prefer first person, even when driving most vehicles.

But there are some vehicles that translate pretty badly to a computer game, and it can make them very difficult to deal with in first person.  This is primarily the small vehicles, motorcycle, ATV, bicycle.

Try driving any of these, especially offroad, in first person and it becomes an exercise in frustration.  Now yes even IRL the ride gets pretty bouncy.  But also IRL our bodies, eyes etc have an amazing ability to steady our view quite a bit in the midst of the bouncy ride.  But in game its much more like a fixed view.

If there was a way to have a bit of a "steadycam" effect when driving these vehicles, I'd be all for it.  Otherwise I find these particular ones mostly usable only in 3rd person.

The only other area is when backing up.  Again IRL I can shift my entire torso, bend around and get a good view out of the back of the vehicle, that simply isn't achievable in game.  But this is less of an issue than the above one and could be dealt with.

Awesome! :)

That's kind of my point though; that there should be other methods to solve the issue rather than allowing third person to remain since the cons by far outweighs the pro's. Why not just be able to "lean" inside or on a vehicle with the Q and E keys? Combine this with freelooking with Alt and we will be very able to see around us. Also as you said the camera sure could use some improvement but I imagine that is a part of the whole vehicle overhaul.

Improve the system instead of letting us have it the easy way, that's what I want!

I guess it depends in what environment we are talking.  Current Dayz/Arma2 is pretty much unfixable in these aspects.  Future games sure it would be nice.
