Hmm.

I remember Dean talking about how he didn't want many people in the initial alpha. He said something about wanting a small, dedicated group who would actually want to help improve the game rather tan just play or something like that.

Now we have some footage of the latest build, the build that could very well be the initial release. And, let's face it, it was rough- the animations were bad, the zombies were to stupid to be convincing, the inventory worked about half the time, and, heck, sometimes you could even open doors. It was bad at best.

But do anyone else have the slightest suspicion that this may have been done on purpose? Think about it: a lot of people are going to be turned off by how rough it looks. Only those who are really excited about DayZ will play it.

I'd like to post this quote by rocket:

I think the biggest thing is, we're making, particularly for the alpha, it is for a hardcore group of people who really want to play it. So I'm sure you're familiar with Prison Architect. Same deal. Lot of people looked at the alpha, maybe they bought it, and were a little disappointed. It wasn't made for everybody. It was made for a group of people… like I played it, I thought this is great, this is gonna be really good, but I didn't play a lot in the first alpha.

So I think that's the track we're taking. So what I'd say to people is, if you don't like what you're seeing, don't buy the alpha

Just a quick question - but has anyone here actually been involved in alpha testing of a game before?

I only say this because my expectations of an alpha seem completely different to some others expectations.

I don't want to spout the classic "It's only an alpha" response but really, some people are getting all het up about some really insignificant things, or things we know are only placeholders.

If anyone mentions fonts again i swear.............................

Yes , a couple..i swore never again. But you know what happens to never say never..and who the hell is getting Het up without me knowing about it !

I really do not like the new movement at all. It has less momentum and it twitches often. I don't like the counter-strike cross-hair or the cheap attempt to make the gun-play more like it, either.

This looks more like WarZ than it does DayZ, and that's awful.

I actually have to agree with you for once Gummy. I really don't like the animations. I wouldn't say they're awful but they sure as heck aren't great.

An alpha is that thing that comes out two weeks before the finished game is released right..

Seriously though, the zombies need A LOT of work. Everything else is shaping up nicely considering it's currently pre-alpha, my biggest fear is there is some technical limitation as to why zombies will always be a buggy mess though.

THIS is what i meant when i was "complaining". i think they are doing a great job and i am understanding of the games development state and what to expect from it.

what i fear is what smash said, and that arma just cant do the zombies and never will. if they could fix it a year from now then id be fine but if they simply cant... hmm that would not be good.

the animations look weird i agree, but im thinking that may just be because they are new and foreign looking so the seem "off" from what we are used to.

crosshair is super lame. not how it looks just that its there. my heart sank a little when i saw that. fingers crossed that its temporary!

The Q+A sessions I've read/watched are fine for a quick overview or progress update, but it'd be good for the general mood to hear what the plans are with the things so many people "hate".

Hopefully, after the expo-rush calms down, we'll get some indication, via devblog, of how close the animation and handling is to what Rocket is aiming for. I seriously doubt what we've been shown is ideal, by anyone's standards.

If we get a dev's opinion, on a scale of 1 to 10, how on-target features such as inventory, animation and zed-behaviour are, it ought to put some folks minds to rest.

In my time as a sparky, I found that explaining "the mess is just a means to an end" eases concern significantly when folks freak out about holes in the floor, for example.

You wouldn't want to live in a house with bare plasterboard because it's ugly as fuck, but you need something sturdy to hang your fancy, bonny wallpaper on.

Lets hope that the sync issues that Rocket talks about address some of the issues regarding zombies. Seeing a zombie jump, fly past the character and 1 second later the screen greys out signifying a hit was my biggest concern.

I honestly do not have a problem with the animations i have seen.

Maybe i am too used to the old Looney Tunes cartoons when i was growing up and so view computer animations as 'voodoo magic'

I ask hard hitting question.

I ask why many washing machine litter Chernarus streets, and when Vasiliy can expect pigdog to leave Motherland.

See, the animations themselves, it thought were really well done. The thing that I noticed was the gliding over terrain while running.

I don't even understand why it looked unnatural, I just know it did. Something wasn't right.

I feel like I'm repreating myself.

I go now.

@ Comrade Reznikov. Nice one.

Before read 17 pages, I have to ask this:

If you think the actual work showed is nice, you are not prepared to bee an alpha or beta tester sorry.

What Rocket need are beta testers who ask to him sorry you failed in some points, are this ones and you have to solve its, go work again and give me new stuff to test.

-Zombie animations need a full rework the stuff created in motion capture make him look like ridicule. Some times motion capture is not the best way to find dramatically animations, I know you expended a lot of money on motion capture sessions but its a fail.

-Inventory system is not working, this is not a mmorpg, you have to loot more fast, especially before you make zombies running inside buildings, we can't lose time draging items whit the mouse.

-Player animations make him look like ridiculous, again motion capture is not enough, and you need an animator artist to rework on motion capture animations, to make it look like better. Contract one there are a lot of people finding work.

-Remove the way to loot all what is close, if the finally of put loot hidden is to improve scavenger, why I can loot all near me? Opening my inventory?

-Remove quick item bar, this is not warz , the best point of dayz are you need time to make actions. Like change weapon, like open my bag, to take an item etc... Also broke immersion , more stuff in screen, less immersion, UI fail sorry, rework.

I prefer some criticism, to people asking me , nice work give me the game now, is perfect. Take my beans, game is awesome, take my money now.

This is not the way, but the nice point, are they can change way, just need true feed back, no need people asking him how well they do, him selves can see went they do some nice, the hard is see went you do some bad. that’s why they need feed back.

Open your mind.

this is really important. but i think gamers who will play the early alpha despite all its bugs will criticize. they will try to help the game as far as the y can do by testing. as said many times before. alpha is or should be testing primarily, it is not necessarily fun to play ;)

-Zombie animations need a full rework the stuff created in motion capture make him look like ridicule. Some times motion capture is not the best way to find dramatically animations, I know you expended a lot of money on motion capture sessions but its a fail.

nevertheless to me it is a bit too early to judge them. but at the moment they are at least worrisome... Let's see if they really got rid of the mod's limitations.

-Inventory system is not working, this is not a mmorpg, you have to loot more fast, especially before you make zombies running inside buildings, we can't lose time draging items whit the mouse.

Why is it not working? To me it seemed quite decent to use (although matt had his problems, but he had them literally with everything ;)) you can just click and add them fast or do it over the inventory. there will be nothing to worry about imho.

-Player animations make him look like ridiculous, again motion capture is not enough, and you need an animator artist to rework on motion capture animations, to make it look like better. Contract one there are a lot of people finding work.

anims are twitchy at the moment. but i don't see them as bad as some do, really. there needs to be a smooth transition between anims and they should feel more "weighted".

-Remove the way to loot all what is close, if the finally of put loot hidden is to improve scavenger, why I can loot all near me? Opening my inventory?

I don't really understand, but you can only pick up things from your field of view even in the open inventory. so this one is a none-argument.

-Remove quick item bar, this is not warz , the best point of dayz are you need time to make actions. Like change weapon, like open my bag, to take an item etc... Also broke immersion , more stuff in screen, less immersion, UI fail sorry, rework.

The Quickitem bar is really contradicting the idea of seeing as little as possible on screen (hud)....however quickitem doesn't mean you'll get your items instantly, it means you know where you've stored these selected items and can retrieve them by one single key-stroke. (easier handling). i agree that it is an immersion braker at the moment...but i don't really even care to repeat "it's still pre-alpha"....

I prefer some criticism, to people asking me , nice work give me the game now, is perfect. Take my beans, game is awesome, take my money now.

ppl who really care for the game hopefully will never do so. some will always focus more on the bad and some on the good stuff. (thank god we have all different personalities ;))

This is not the way, but the nice point, are they can change way, just need true feed back, no need people asking him how well they do, him selves can see went they do some nice, the hard is see went you do some bad. that’s why they need feed back.

Do people have careers in whinging?

Seriously Have you played the SA? NO, please keep your uneducated comments until you play the game because your sounding like children.

If you don't like it, Go and find something else to play, Just please stop moaning.

All the effort and time gone into the SA and you moan when you see bugs and stuff, were any of you present when the Mod started? it was a crappola of bugs and even doors which broke players, Many times I started off either in the sea or the debug forest. SA will go through the same transition and will come out better and stronger.

Please be patient and wait till you get your hands on it, If you are waiting for a finished product, sorry it will never happen, It will evolve and change, Perhaps certain attitudes will also.

DayZ Fanboy and proud (Why? because it has given me more from a game than any other game out there)

Open your mind.

Make your mind up. You want time to make your actions yet you want an inventory system where you can loot fast.

Loot is only available to loot when it is in your line of sight. For example If it is under a bed it will not show up when you open your inventory unless you can actually see it.

The quick bar does not make the animations any faster just the process quicker. Imagine it as being a thought process of "I want to get my gun out" rather than manually having to open your inventory and get the gun out. If the gun is on your back why cant you access that gun with one button?

And i think saying the animations are ridiculous is a bit of a stretch. I don't know what people expect but as far as i know James Cameron and the Avatar team were not employed by Bohemia.

snip

we have one real problem here with the whole evolution and mutation of dayz. it was unfolding to communities over a time frame of about a year and in this very stretch the game kept mutating all the time. So based by the time you heard about and started to play dayz you experienced the game differently. So guys from the very beginning, the middle of all this and the ones who started playing in the last couple of months all had different initial experiences... Now we are standing here and everyone is arguing what this game should look like. unfortunately for some, dean wants to get back to the very beginning just to intensify this former experience you got out from the mod.

Yeah I remember hearing about Day Z from another guy on a separate forum. So I eventually bought it like a week later. The videos at first showed Day Z as a game where there are some PKers, but people generally will work together.

Now when I get it que me being forced to kill everything that movies because I'm always getting shot at. Even when I first played the game the zombies I could deal with. The damn killers everywhere were a nuisance.

I'm outraged over the footage I saw. Outraged I tell you. So outraged that I'm not going to play the alpha until it's released!! Then I'm going to complain about the lack of military gear and vehicles.

My greatest critique is that zombies are too fast!

Zombies should be slow, but there should be a ton of them, so damage in numbers not in speed and jumping...

Other aspects look fine to me and I understand it is still a work in progress.

I am loving that sentence where there will be only four thermal scopes in the world, this will add the feeling of accomplishment when you will find a really good gun like M4A1 (just an example)...

Rocket must have people burn. He's politely ripping people apart on reddit which is some decent reading. He seems particularly interested in people who think graphics make a new engine and people who still think doors are the enemy in the mod. He has been answering the most common gripes people seem to have so anyone with an itchy reply finger should take ten minutes and check out what's he's been saying before crying about the zombie animations, glitchy attacks, sounds, gobs of loot, etc.
