Armor and equipment

Recommended Posts

The discussion is created for my suggestions regarding armor and equipment. If you know what exactly I am saying, it's things like vests, helmets to gasmasks, facemasks with different elements and perks for your character. If possible, DayZ wouldn't even be compatible with such things added to the game but in the future release of DayZ right? That would be pretty sweet.

If you were to think of any piece of armor or equipment, what would it be?

Full-body chainmail suit. Hood and all. Then a gas mask over my face for added protection against non-contact diseases.

Why? Because no teeth can bite through chainmail and rip your skin open to the point of drawing blood which would then get infected. Plus, it's lightweight. So it doesn't hold you back or limit you a whole lot.

Here's some suggestions toward armor and equipment:

  • Leather Jacket - A Brown leather jacket, offers no resistance versus firearms or melee weapons. Is slightly resistant against some bites or scratches. I'd like to vote that normal freshly spawn survivors start off with some basic clothing like this here leather jacket.

A-2%20ELC%20SHH%20small.png

  • Surplus Flak Jacket - Most common form of Armor, relatively poor protection from anything barring small caliber handguns (Makarov, 9x19mm firearms) and only protects the chest region. Can also be equipped with a ballistic plate. Hero skins are issued this type of armor by default complete with a ballistic Cermaic plate.

  • Kevlar Vest - Police Issue Kevlar Vest capable of protecting the users torso from handgun rounds (Makarov, 9x19mm weapons and Shotgun Pellet ammo) but lacks the ability to hold a ballistic plate.

  • Police Riot Gear - Police Issue Riot Gear, covers the entire body cannot protect against firearms but provides a strong resistance against melee weapons (Crowbar, Hatchet) and unarmed attacks (Zombie Attacks). The amount of armor however increases the amount of noise generated and speeds up the amount of thirst and hunger.

Riot_Gear.jpg

  • Osprey Body Armor - British Military Body Armor, covers the chest and can only be found at Military Camps and Bases. Provides protection against all handgun rounds (Makarov, 9x19mm, .45 ACP), Shotgun Pellets and intermediate rifle rounds (5,45 AK, 5,56 STANAG, CZ550, Lee Enfield). Also includes a space for a ballistic plate. The large bulky armor however increases the rate at which thirst and hunger set in.

  • Interceptor Body Armor - Body Armor worn by the United States Army. Covers the chest and can only be found at Military Camps and Bases.

  • 6B23 Body Vest - Russian Body Armor, found only at Military Bases and Camps. Covers the chest and provides protection against all handgun rounds (Makarov, 9x19mm, .45 ACP), Shotgun Pellets and intermediate rifle rounds (5,45 AK, 5,56 STANAG, CZ550, Lee Enfield). Also includes a space for a ballistic plate. The large bulky armor however increases the rate at which thirst and hunger set in.

  • Dragon Skin Armor - High Quality, near impervious body armor, found only at Helicopter Crash Sites. Covers the chest only. Provides protection against all handgun rounds (Makarov, 9x19mm, .45 ACP), Shotgun Pellets and Slugs, intermediate rifle rounds (5,45 AK, 5,56 STANAG, CZ550, Lee Enfield, AKM). Does not include a ballistic plate cover, as it uses its own unique dragonscales plate.

tac-nsg-front.jpg

  • Ballistic Plate - Used to supplement body armor that can accept a ballistic plate. Comes in two variants which adds different protection values. Comes in two variants:
  • Ceramic Plate allows for protection against intermediate caliber projectiles such as 5,45 AK and 5,56 STANAG and some high caliber projectiles such as Shotgun Slugs, AKM and Lee Enfield rounds (It takes an additional shot to kill with these weapons to the chest). They are only found at Military Bases.
  • Steel Plates allows for protection against both intermediate projectiles such as 5,45 AK and 5,56 STANAG and high caliber projectiles such as AKM, M14/DMR/M24/SVD, Lee Enfield and CZ550 however are only found at Helicopter Crash Sites. NOTE: Steel Plates only protect against the M14/DMR/M24/SVD, Lee Enfield and CZ550 for an extra 4 shots to kill, meaning it takes 3 shots to the chest to knock someone out and an additional shot to kill, it still induces heavy shock when hit however.

Even the top 3 heaviest chainmail suits(on your example) barely weight anything.

You do realize that 9Kg's worth of metal doesn't feel like any weight at all when it's distributed across your entire body?

Sure, a bag with 10Kg's worth might feel heavy after a while, but that's because the weight is mostly supported by very specific points of your body, mainly your shoulders, with relatively thin straps. But most soldiers have to fight with WAY more stuff than that. 4-6 times more, to be a little more specific. (A bulletproof vest can easily weight up to 20 pounds, which is about 9Kg. But it doesn't cover you nearly as much as a chainmail when it comes to zombies.)

35-50Kg was a usual pack load for us even on exercise or on a tab, i only weigh 67Kg myself at 6ft tall (horrible weight i know) but still lugging about that weight for a few hours at a time was do-able, exhausting but still able to fight after ward... (weight doesn't include weapon and my webbing kit)

Just a full biker suit is enough! Its warm, its has a good resistant against pretty mush everything zombies can do (try wearing one and you will know).

You would easily survive a bunch of zombies with light bruise all over at most.

And it is COOL!... And common.... and realistic... and not so loud as those plate and chains... and light... and comfortable... and so on.......

Gas mask and NBC suit would be cool if they added poisonous fumes or toxic areas. I think flak jackets or body armour of some kind would be neat as a rare drop, maybe also a military helmet as a rare drop (could stop small cal bullets and maybe have a % chance of stopping higher cal bullets depending on velocity and bullet calibre). Some kind of additional footwear would be neat such as light footwear that would reduce noise but decrease foot protection would be neat I suppose.

Scavenger's list of Armour is great.

All that I would add is that if you wear Armour you will not be able to wear camouflage gear. Otherwise snipers would be pretty tough to beat.

Also anyone who is hit with bullets should fall unconscious (the number of hits should be equivalent to a killing blow, so if it takes two bullets to kill without armour then two hits should render a player unconscious).

This opens up a way of knocking someone out then rob them. But still gives the player a fighting chance to survive.

I was going to mention the same thing. Pretty difficult to come by in Eastern Europe though.

I want a freaking bomb disposal suit that can take a satchel charge to the face :D

Downside, you can only walk with it, no running. impervious to zombies but enough of them might actually block you in.

As long as your character suffers a weight/mobility penalty proportionate to the armour worn, that's fine by me.

And you'll not be running far in an NBC suit and respirator.

Your armour stopping a bullet shouldn't result in your character being knocked unconscious. Knocked over/down yes, but not knocked out.

Current issue ballistic helmets are only rated to stop direct hits from 9mm pistol rounds.

On the idea of 'protection' different levels of gear

Civilian-low to medium grade protection, common. This would be the low grade/improvised stuff, thick leather jackets/armor, sports equipment, lowlevel police equipment (stab/ballistics vests) construction hard hats, hunter's gear (cammo clothes with thous reflective strips built in, harder for zombies and animals to see but a player paying attention can spot you), bike helmets, latex gloves and face mask (minor infection protection), steeltoe boots, ect.

Paramilitary/Specialist-medium to high, somewhat rare but not as rare as military stuff. Things like SWAT gear, the sharksuit mentioned above, stuff a PMC could get thats not as good as government issue, gasmasks, HAZMAT suits (major infection protection, but of course your only wearing a thin piece of brightly colored plastic so...high visibility and noise and almost no other protection)

Military-high, very rare, includes flakjackets, helemts, combat boots, ect, would include NBC suits (helmet, gasmask, flakjacket, gloves ect, high protection from infection (slightly worse than a hazmat) and ballistics/zombies.

And the average Joe Schmo is going to know how to equip this armor properly right?

Forget about armor lets just make everyone superheros.

I think he means most of the body armor (lots of straps and whatnot, oh wait thats a knee pad not a codpiece), and honestly I don't think there would/should be any chain mail/medieval era armor or weapons (plenty of stuff we can use without having to raid the non existent Devil's Castle museum and giftshop or the Cherno Natural History Museum, why use a rusty and corroded hanger sword when you can find an officer's dress saber in good condition) A suit of chainmail, while yes providing bite and scratch protection, would be heavy as hell, and wont protect against zombies trying to break your arms, legs, rip of your head or even punches.

I agree with Draco 122's list defiantly the body armor like surplus Kevlar and such for bullet protection and riot gear for bite protection obviously couldn't wear both at once.

And yes a Bambi used the search function and looked befor posting!
