Suggestions for the DayZ standalone - thinking outside of the limitations of an Arma 2 mod.

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if a trip mechanic can be added. So, how it works is that depending the speed, terrain and the obstacle you run over. There is a dice that is rolled with a certain amount of faces and one makes you trip. The faster you go the less blank faces the dice has, and the type of terrain is also taken into account, is it a soft marshy ground or is it a road? Then finally is it a root that you trip over or a small pit?

I just made this in about 2 min so don't expect the best of grammar or spelling.

let me get this straight. you want to turn DayZ into a turn based board game? rolling die, for a chance to trip? and do what, break your leg? zombies can already one hit you to break your leg or worse.

The suggestions is hell of entertaining to read and will carry some sort of meaning to a surviving game if implemented correctly.

The matter of building a place we can call home in the game kind of add some indirect objective to the game. And this is what we need a sort of objective to bring about a feel of acomplishment in the game when its done and this will bring hell loads of players.

terrain deformation will ruin the gameplay cause there will be some trolls that will deface the terrain in a very bad way.

What i think would be great is being able to carry big thick steel sheets together with pillars (or even concrete) in trucks or cars to be later set down on the ground to act as a wall and hence a fort after much development later on. There should be more utility vehicle such as bulldozers, maybe a movable crane and why not a fuel carrying truck?? Things like that to facilitate the building process and of course the ability to create a sort of squad so that teamates location around your player is easy and they can contribute to building the fort and work as a team.

Now for convience of the server i think that admins should give a green light about the location it is being built to prevent a bad gameplay for other players.

And i kind have got an intersting idea: Why not include books that players can read in real time to get the knowledge about something.

This is huge, ranging from medical use to crafting useful object, creating small weapons to construction of a fort, etc.

And i am for the more you do things the better you get at it, this can promote gameplay like one is specialise medic, the other a scavnger, etc in a squad.

And finally with the radio system the use of frequency would be so much awesome. Dude set your radio frequency to 142.3, so much fun. interestingly browsing all frequency to fall on an interesting conversion, so much adrenaline.

If you have since some of the idea above somewhere else its purely coincidental I did not check all the posts and the all 33 pages that this thread has.

I am so excited about the standalone.

Btw great work ruarz

I have a suggestion, I'm sure no one has suggested because it IS a little odd. But maybe a mini-game hosted by private servers where players are soldiers parachuting into dayz map and have a certain time limit to meet up at a certain rendezvous point or something before a zombie army attacks. Objectives? Survive or defend or something. This is to take a breath from the actual dayz, since it is more team work and more laid back since you spawn as a new character with weapons already and hence nothing to risk. I think that this is the first, awesome thing where its a realistic zombie style with an army of players. Or maybe the objectives are to survive as long as possible sorta like a wave system where after each wave you can loot ammo, find bandages or manage to safety bandage yourself without being attacked before the next round. To me this seems pretty cool, thoughts?

This IS a mini-game, so should it come with the standalone or separate purchase? Also I like it but I need other peoples opinion on this? And this is btw the first suggestion of its type. So opinions? Good/bad?

I havent read all 33 pages granted so im not sure if it has been discussed, but if the direction and aim for the game is realism then i would like to see bullet and wound realism.

Realistically if you are shot, depending on where that round hits and passes through- Simply bandaging it with a field dressing should not be end of the repercussions. If you hit with a 9mm round from an angle where it passes through your but cheek, hits only muscle/fat no arteries or bone, a field dressing on the entry and exit site will slow blood loss if you only walk from that point on, but long term requires being sewn closed, stapled, or cauterized. It also should impact movement speed until healed.

A player should carry that wound and its restrictions for some time, granted nobody wants to play a game where one bullet prevents them from being combat effective for a realistic amount of time, IE for days of healing, but there should be repercussions for trying to murder to loot someone and getting shot in the process. perhaps say 12 hours server time for muscle/artificial damage like a graze or clean entry exit of a round somewhere non vital.

Taking a hit that passes through a kidney/liver/stomach is a slow but almost certain death. While u may have time to hide your loot somewhere you arent going to be able to run full speed, certainly not outrun a zombie. A round in the arm could pass cleanly but could also hit the bone, causing a fracture or chipping the bone, hollow points or soft lead tipped rounds have less chance of deflecting more chance of breaking a bone, FMJ deflect more easily, break bones less often. Heavier rounds like a 45 deflect less and impact more energy giving better chance to a break.

simple blood loss dmg calculations and bandaging dont cut it for me. If a round pierces your lung you can survive with the right care, and you could sprint at full speed through the pain until your O2 saturation drops and you cant supply your body so you slow down, eventully pass out, plus blood loss and internal bleeding. Just because you go full auto on someone with your AK-47 and they only hit you once with a makarov should not mean you get away scott free with all their loot at the expense of a bandage if that one shot passed through a lung, hit your spine and deflected it through your stomach..

Granted text/cutscene or UI indication to alert the player of the damage they have suffered would be desired. in the above scenario chest and stomach pain would be indicated, and a sucking chest wound.

I think this would promote group gameplay due to strength in numbers, would make lone wolfing it more challenging, would add the realistic drawbacks to griefing/murder should you get wounded making a player think twice before shooting at someone one on one. In the real world a thug with a full auto AK that has no discipline, experiance, or skill can empty their clip at someone 50 yards away in one trigger pull hitting nothing but air, while one round from a little .25 acp fired with skill can kill them dead.

Maybe im asking too much, but bullets physical damage characteristics are huge for me as well. a .223 fmj out of a 16 inch barrel has the advantages of speed, flat trajectory, and accuracy over a .45 acp, but creates a smaller hole (entry and exit) and a smaller temporal wound cavity (less damage to organs that it doesnt actually hit and less muscle/arterial dmg near the wound path) it also has less energy to work with. if that .45 is hollow point it expands considerable slowing faster and dumping energy faster. The difference being at the right angle at .223 fmj could hit the chest just to the left of the sternum, miss the heart lung and spine and exit through the back, a slow bleeder that leaves the victim combat effective if weak constitution or shock doesnt disable them mentally. That same wound path with a .45 hollow point will 9 times out of ten tear the aorta if it passes within an inch or two, and can tear the lung open due to the fluid around rapidly expanding out of the way of the bullet. so inside 25 yards a .45 is more deadly round for round than an m4/m16 the m4/16 has advantage of accuracy, rate of fire, and clip size. getting that first well aimed shot at an unarmored adversary means win with the .45.

I could go on all day and there is no best solution, no best weapon overall. its a measure of pros/cons. US military ammo for the .223 is know to boattail at a given distance that varies due to many factors (temp/humidity/wind speed and direction to name a few) and once it does looses a lot of stopping power. a 7.62/.308 nato on the other hand tends to tumble through the body at given ranges depending on barrel twist rate and length doing massive internal damage. the original m16s did this to a point in vietnam with the twist rate of the barrels specified by eugene stoner till the military "Knew better" and changed it.

I would just like bullet type/weight/speed weapon barrel length and range to factor into lethality. Where the bullet impacts and exits and what organs and major blood vessels it hits or passes by and theretical damage done to factor in. having that impact how the wounds are treated would be awesome as well. One bandage shouldnt cure a lung hit or the entry and exit holes through your buttcheeks. If the angle is just right you would need 3 bandages and a mirror for that.

I have a suggestion regarding the „Shooter“ Problem.

Jump to „Here is what i came up with!“ if you dont want to here another moan. ^^

Let me get this straight at first. IMHO DayZ is a Survival-„Horror“-Game with Zambies in it. Not an Casual FPS „See my Big Highscore Mothfucker!“ Wich is the reason why im playing it. I like the upcoming Panic wenn i am unarmed, Out of Beans and here the Z’s closing in. Having Bandits is a great Idea, another Threat do Fear! I am fully aware that beeing killed i spart oft he came! I even can imagine my self running arround making traps. Yellin „Beans or Life“ and shit. Could be Fun but I like survival more

But let‘s Face the Fact Bandits now are mostly Shooterfans hunting for there Highscore. An Anoyance nothing more ruining the Game. I mean whats the Deal, hacking myself a as40 TWS an shooting everyone from Buildings in Cherno? If i wanted to do that there is Arma2 itself or Other Shooters….

So thats where i startet thinking: How to force Players beeing Bandits instead of Killers?

- Here is what came up with:

Problem:

Main Problem ist hat Players get rewarded with the Loot of those the have Killed.

Besides the Banditskin there is nothing negativ about it.

Task:

Let People be Bandits without spoiling there fun but have Killers punished.

Solutions:

Let them be hunted by there Victims. The Idea behind this is not New. In Fact we all have seen those Movies with Characters Hounted by there Past.

So lets make a Killer regret what he did and stop him from is doing.

Make him have Visions, Voices and Ghosts hunting him. If you kill more it gets worse and worse unto a Point where you are constantly Hounted by your Ghosts.

The Players has Flashbacks in form of Overlayed Pictures and hears Screams out of Nowhere. The more he kills more frequent and longer they until a Permanent Point . This will scare him at first and annoy in the End by making it nearly impossible to shoot.

The Humanitysystem can be utilized for that. So Bandits that steal wont get Visions and the unnassesary killing is reduced.

Oh one Perk for the Heros if a Killer targets a Hero, he shivers like in Pain so a Hero is harder to Kill.

Speaking of Heros. How cool would it be finding a mere „insane“ Killer beeing able to give him Medis only Heros have to rescue him bit by bit from the Darkside…..

So hope you like my Idea. Oh and Sorry fort he English im just a Kraut trying hard. o0O{Squaaaa Squari ah one time i am able to say „Squirrel“ Just keep trying^^}

o0O[There should be PVP-Match Server and Surviving-Servers]

I think that the Stechkin APS should added to the military pistols list. It is not as common as the Makarov but it is a fairly common Russian Selective Fire Machine pistol and law enforcement use to this day. It fires 9x18mm Makarov ammunition and should definitely be included in the game. It would be similar to the Uzi but would fire more common ammunition making a perfect all-rounder. Good at killing Zeds due to cheap ammo and relative quietness. It could be used in semi-automatic mode to kill Zeds. when facing player the user could switch to full auto.

Hopefully 9x18mm with be buffed in standalone to make the ammunition type valid for PvP

No, sorry, I wrote this at 10pm for me. What I mean is that when you go over a certain obstacle (like a tree root) you have a chance to trip and then you are put into the prone stance.

1). more variety of the low tier gear/weapons.

2). more to choose from in clothing.

3). bigger map without the possibility to go outside it.

4). flashlights should work vs NVG.

5). Stamina for running.

6). ATV can cross bridges.

7). less high tier weapon spawn places,

8). more "realistic" zombies

i think an accurate seasonal pattern would add even more immersion tho it shouldnt be introduced like that until late into the beta once were out of alpha just to see how its running. but say like it is now seasons change every 4 months so why not do that for DayZ to were already on a accurate 24 hour timer. also legitimate weather and tempeture patterns for the area your in should be regulated like say if ur in the northernmost part of the map it should be colder then the southern part.

I feel that Dayz should have a more interesting color pallet. For example, my suggestion is for DayZ to have extremely red lighting when the sun is going down to make the game feel more eerie. Integrating creepier color schemes on certain times of day and or in different areas on the map will heighten the game's horror aspect if done correctly I believe.

Okay I got 2 suggestions and I don't know if they already been posted.

1. Make a single player version in the standalone because some times people have internet problems and that sucks, and also make things when you need two players (like a transfusion) able for one player in single player.

2. A tired system like when you run or sprint you get tired, but when getting chased (don't ask me how they would be able to do this) by zombies they get adrenaline and so they run faster but when they stop they get really tired.

1st of all, there will be no singleplayer, due to the fact of easy looting without risk of another player. P.S. another reason singleplayer sucks. If your internet sucks, do something about it.

2nd. Blood transfusion should require two people to encourage teamwork rather than suicidal bandits. This also means that the game will be harder, but hey, I think its better this way.

Before I forget, a little suggestion - maybe it has been suggested before, sorry, but I didn't see it anywhere. Anyhow, your character should be able to switch to melee weapons without dropping your main gun. This also means that there should be a secondary slot - pistol, and main weapon slot - your main gun, as well as a melee slot. What do you guys think?

melee slots and secondary firearms, so if you have clothing with holsters and pockets or anything that can hold your weapons you should be able to hold whatever guns you want, a belt holding a pistol a fencing sword and maybe a small double barrel shotgun. Or a golf bag and you have with it two more snipers and maybe you can let your m4 loose with a rope you tied from it to you, maybe but it would keep moving and bumping to you all the time you move.

The only current objection I have with the game is how often you have to eat and drink in the course of a day. The servers do a day and night cycle over 24hr period. You should only have to eat and drink maybe 3 to 4 times in a 24hr period.

G'day All.

Sorry if these have been mentioned before. Has anyone thought of growing DayZ, creating new towns or cities? In order to get to the next town, you must have transport (boat, car or aircraft) with enough fuel to match, not to mention water and other supplies needed for the trip. The next town can be a new server that you log into. Over time you may have ten towns/cities or lots more, (some maybe even based on real life places) that everyone can travel to and from.

Maybe an army base or two but these should be the hardest to get through due to the high value loot you might be able to score or a place that has nothing (your choice).

Having the ability to create a safe zone like inside a building would help and I think this has already been mentioned before (sorry if it has). These safe zones can be over runned by bandits/zombies if there is too much noise, light during night and anything else that can attract people. These areas can also be used to pause the game for players for when they wish to disconnect.

There is honestly far too much that can be included into the new stand alone DayZ and there is so much you can steal from other games that are already out (not just zombie games).

Let's not forget being able to store food, weapons and other items by some means would help out a lot of players who work together. Able to dig holes and create traps if it isn't the owner that is opening up these caches.

Well, as I said there are a lot more ideas that can be used but overloading a player is the balance that every creator has to get right. Thanks for reading and sorry if the above ideas have been mentioned before.

Pleeeeeaaasssseee add boat trailers!!! They are trailers that can be towed behind land vehicles, that allow boats to be transported inland. Also please make a few more different types of boats :)

You know, most of this has already been addressed in the OP if it hasn't already been announced by the devs:

1. OP: -BASIC WISHLIST- High-end military gear should be far rarer and harder to obtain. There should be a greater emphasis on civilian weaponry, particularly hunting rifles, shotguns and melee weapons. Weapons in general will also require maintenance afaik, meaning that if your gun is in crappy condition it is liable to jam.

2. OP: -CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES-

3. Devs have announced "Chernarus Plus," an expanded and altered version of the Chernarus map to serve as a starting point for the SA; there may also be a nearby island such as Utes accessible by boat or aircraft.

4. Good idea, this has been discussed on the forums and should be added to the list here; the same goes for the L85 thermal scope, which should be more sensitive to interference from glass etc.

5. OP: -A REVISED HEALTH/STATUS/WOUNDING SYSTEM- under the "Breathing" header. Currently, being out of breath affects your aim and produces heavy breathing sounds. I agree with you that it should also affect your running speed, which would slowly go down to a walking pace after so many minutes of uninterrupted running/sprinting.

6. Absolutely.

7. See 1.

8. OP: -CHANGES TO THE ZOMBIES AND THEIR BEHAVIOR-

i think an accurate seasonal pattern would add even more immersion tho it shouldnt be introduced like that until late into the beta once were out of alpha just to see how its running. but say like it is now seasons change every 4 months so why not do that for DayZ to were already on a accurate 24 hour timer. also legitimate weather and tempeture patterns for the area your in should be regulated like say if ur in the northernmost part of the map it should be colder then the southern part.

I'm not sure players will be willing to put up with four rl-months of a particular season in the game. For example, I'd probably enjoy a snowy-white winter scenario for a few weeks, but then I will long for the summer weather again. Instead of forcing a four-month cycle, perhaps different maps (once they are introduced) should exhibit different climates? I guess as long as server admins can decide how they would like the weather to behave (in general) on their servers, everyone has a choice and that's cool. I'm all for choices.

1. Personally I'd love to see a single-player campaign. Needless to say, loot gathered in SP would not carry over to MP servers. It could server almost more as a gameplay tutorial than a narrative campaign.

2. See above. The stamina system definitely needs a few tweaks.

Disagree on SP, simply have two separate characters for SP and MP with no overlap between them. Due to the lack of other players in SP mode, there would have to be new challenges to make it interesting. NPC's should be avoided but perhaps they could make it a lone survivor scenario, i.e. "you are the last human on Earth, go follow some mysterious radio broadcast to the promised land" or whatever. Sort of like a gameplay tutorial with a narrative.

Has definitely been suggested, including in the OP, which no one seems to read: -A REVISED INVENTORY SYSTEM-

Also, Rocket has said that the SA inventory system is being rebuilt from scratch to make it more intuitive, and that includes having appropriate slots for rifles, handguns and melee weapons (assuming you have found the necessary gear, i.e. gun sling, holster, tool belt, etc.)

The only current objection I have with the game is how often you have to eat and drink in the course of a day. The servers do a day and night cycle over 24hr period. You should only have to eat and drink maybe 3 to 4 times in a 24hr period.

Couldn't agree with you more.

It annoys me when people like you who have 0 posts that you make a new account to post a suggestion without reading the rules. This has already been suggested, and MANY times. Please refrain from suggesting, unless you are think that no one has posted it already.

To be fair, your suggestion concerning the inventory system (re. switching melee weapons) has also been made elsewhere a million times. It's even in the OP. I don't mind so much when people rehash old ideas, since there's nothing new under the sun, but don't get after the noobs for doing the same.

Pleeeeeaaasssseee add boat trailers!!! They are trailers that can be towed behind land vehicles, that allow boats to be transported inland. Also please make a few more different types of boats :)

That would indeed be awesome.

Excellent, keep up the good work ruarz! What about the idea of Polaroid photos (to supplement the Notes idea) -- is there enough support for this idea for you to add it to the Community Wishlist? I'm certainly not the first to suggest it.

In reply to Bakst.

I agree with you single player should be an option for players and if you ever played the single player mod "daizy" you would know a lot can be done with it other than just zombies, my first play through of it whilst i had internet problems i ran into a group of 5 computer controlled bandits and got my arse handed to me as they had a sniper in the hills 3 bandits in cover behind a wall next to balota and one guy further behind them, earlier on that play through i saw a heli fly bye me too and as its got cheats in this SP mod i spawned a heli and followed and soon after got killed by a that heli over stary I haven't played since i uninstalled steam to fix it and it deleted my arma files somehow and its now gone haven't i haven't download the mod again since then but i plan on doing it was fun to play.

I loved how the NPC bandits used tactics to fight me and the fact there was people in helicopters too, at first i thought it was a bug but after i ran into the bandit group on my next spawn i don't think it was, so something like that added to a possible single player mode would make it more enjoyable.

I've got a simple and reasonable suggestion: remove the possibility of carrying blood/blood products in soldier's/survivor's inventory and option to give blood transfusion in field conditions.

I am medical practitioner who deals with various blood products, plasma and transfusions. I'd like to assure that these actions are basically impossible. Blood requires certain conditions to be stored properly and when those are neglected the transfusion of such blood can cause massive damage or even death.

The possible option for IV transfusions in field conditions are various IV volume expanders - crystaloid or colloid solutions. Former are represented by Hydroxyethyl starch (HES/HAES, common trade names: Hespan, Voluven) and many other. Examples of latter are of NaCl at 0.9% concentration or Lactated Ringer's. Actually they are first-line therapy for any hemorrhage, life-threatening or not.

I surmise blood products in-game should be stored only in hospitals and certain limitations when carrying the into the field should be imposed (basically, the time-stretch when they remain usable).

I must admit, whole blood trasfusion is a life-saving and *only* therapy that can save life when severe hemorrhage and shock occurred (Whole blood can't be stored for more than 7 days actually, other blood products can, if conditions are appropriate).

To sum it up:

Blood/blood products - usable for limited time when carried in backpack, require certain conditions for prolonged storage. But more potent in critical conditions.

Blood volume expanders - capable of being carried with any other player's gear. Sufficient in most combat conditions.
