Hero vs Bandit Play Style

Recommended Posts

Greetings Survivors,

I’d like to start by expressing how grateful I am that we finally have DayZ on console! I, as I’m sure many of you, have been waiting years for this. So thank you Bohemia and Microsoft for making this happen!

As I’m sure many of you have watched Frankie play, and may have heard him talk about the progression of play style within DayZ. He mentioned how some start out friendly, become kos bandits, then may eventually start holding people up, or even helping them in some capacity.

My question to you all is, what play style do you see yourselves as?

Considering we have yet to have a game like DayZ on console, most console gamers are used to kos games like cod, PUBG, and so on. These games seemed to have created the mindset to shoot first. Doing so, seems in my opinion, to take away from the potential experiences we could have if we were to try and establish communication.

My hope, is that we evolve as gamers, at least in DayZ, to try and create a more dynamic experience. As some who may wish to be friendly, could easily be swayed to the dark side by being constantly kos.

What are your thoughts?

My style is to stalk, try talk out of sight, then let them see me briefly, keep trying to talk, they never do, so I put bullets in them before they can put bullets in me. I can't wait for the day someone actually talks and I get to play in a group. It's getting lonely.

That’s a good tactic to try and safely establish communication.

Ive been playing with a friend who always uses party chat. I’m going to stay in game chat now. In the hopes of doing that and seeing if I can chat with anyone.

I did have a one way conversation with a guy who wasn’t using a mic, but could hear me. I held him up, then asked if he needed food or water. He motioned no, and we were on our separate ways.

Let me know if you’d like to team up. I’m always interested in playing with new people.

Yeah, with 99% of my previous encounters being a victim (when I try and approach in a friendly manner), I am sticking to the shadows and staying out of sight.  I won’t hesistate to shoot first and ask questions later if someone runs up on me.  I’ve accumulated way too much gear in addition to a knight helmet I found in a deer stand.  Yes!  I’d like to be more of a hero and have more dynamic conversation, but as what was said above, people are just too volatile at the moment.

I am hoping to play as a helper as much as I can.  I have had only a few encounters so far, I tend to stock to low population servers to avoid KoS Bandits, I have been helped by 1x person who left me a PET bottle after I spawned, and 1x encounter at a Barracks where I was up a tower and spotted another player, who hadn't seen me until he was half way up the ladder.  I spoke first (don;t think they had a mic, stated I was friendly and after a tense few seconds we went our separate ways.  Every other encounter has resulted in my death.  Usually from a concealed sniper. Although last death was a bandit that held me up in the barracks/outpost in Electrozavodsk.  'Drop your shit' i think was the words.  I ignored him and went about my business.  then he shot me in the back!
As mentioned before there are so many people playing this as though its PUBG or similar, I hoping that these people either move back to PUBG or change their play style a bit.  I too will need to change my play style to be more cautious.  And find a gun and ammo combo that actually work.!!

In reality; people who are classing KOS'ers as the bandit's are far from the truth. They are not the same and to call a KOS'er a bandit or relate KOS'ing to being a bandit isnt or shouldn't be done.

A bandit playstyle is in the game to make some sort of opposition to play against but brings a playstyle of a bandit by communication/action in ways of holding players up and taking gear etc etc

For you to have "hero's" as people call them then you need to have the above playstyle of a bandit otherwise the hero is just a helper for players against the elements; sharing food and water or kit etc and it really does dumb down the whole point of being a hero as basically you're just a mule, a lacky, A giver of gear for players to just pass on by and have forgotten you and your generosity  in minutes.

If the bandit playstyle is played correctly then the hero playstyle can be better implemented/played out by players bringing more immersive gameplay and more random, spontaneous interactions between players.

A KOS'er just makes the game bland or at least moves the game in a direction soley focused on PVP as interaction which to me, does make the game bland as I just pointed out. It cuts off different aspects of what can happen and every meet or sighting of a player becomes another battle or easy kill ( as most are, if you see the player first then its easy to stalk and kill, having the jump on people works wonders on DayZ).

Everyone knows the game leans towards KOS already as it has done on PC in majority of circumstances but without private servers etc and even a functioning switch to game chat then I feel the game is fighting a losing battle towards less interactions already.

My point though, its up to us as players to make the game what we want and to call a bandit a KOS'er will put the wrong mindset/playstyle in the head of wanna be bandits.

Myself; I do what I need to do to survive....that means I'm hold you up for food, I'm a do it, I have to shoot you cus you wont surrender?  I'm a do it.....You see me figting zombies or players and help me? I'm a help you....I come across new spawns,Believe unless they pester me or wont stop following me then they will live but the way the game is kind of going....2 months down the line all I'll be doing is shooting first to protect myself LOL

I don’t necessarily agree that one needs to be a bandit in order to pursue the hero style.

There’s a difference in holding someone up, taking all of their gear, and potentially killing them, as opposed to holding someone up, and having them briefly drop their gear to try and establish trust.

The differing factor is the mindset of said player. As we have already discussed how console players have been tinged by these kos games, that play style, even when talking about being a bandit, no doubt bleeds through to this game.

We should try our best to shape the game and this community to something more dynamic, as mentioned in my op. Although, it will undoubtedly test ones resolve. As we will expect to be killed more times than not.

Dont get me wrong, I won’t hesitate to shoot if I get a whiff of hostility. That said, I’m currently fully geared up, but have no intention of killing innocent players, or robbing folks, as I don’t need anything. This is the point where that dynamic aspect can come in to really make the game interesting. Escorting Bambi’s through hostile locations, hunting kos bandits, ect. All the while keeping your eyes peeled, particularly on the Bambi.. You just never know.

Time will certainly tell where the community takes this game. My hope is it just doesn’t turn into another GTA or PUBG mindless kill fest.

Well, Imo, You do need bandits to have heros. If a so called hero has no bandits then hes just a fellow survivor helping out other survivors in times of need or it just means everybody is the so called hero? See what I'm saying.

I know there's a clear obvious difference in the the 2 different scenarios. You have chose a different approach to what I mentioned about holding people up. I said it in the perspective of being a bandit and you said from the perspective of the way you should be approaching any player; with caution until you establish their motives.

I wasnt arguing or disagreeing with you on my reply; I was stating how I feel there is a difference from how you class a bandit and a KOS'er as youve said yourself its down to the player and his mindset how he chooses to play. Just with the implications of what I mentioned about game chat etc players are drawn to KOS rather than talk as they are potentially in party's etc and cant switch in to voice comm.

Just if you want your scenarios of what the game could reach then we need ALL type of players active in servers...Heros, Bandits, KOS'ers (to a degree), Noobs and active groups and clans who play solely on select servers...all more possible when private servers come out.

I understand your point of view. You’re right that all the different play styles helps create a varied experience.

So far, I’ve really only encountered kos style players. Aside from the one unarmed guy I held up.

It’s definitely a risky approach to give people the benefit of the doubt, though the result, If positive, could create lasting experiences.

I think becuase people are trying to play with friends or are in party chat, the majority of players cant switch to game chat and talk to you even if they wanted so most times people shoot to be safe...I'm guilty of it myself but I aint dieing due to a flaw/bug in the game lol

Most players are just like how people are in real life; just got to go with it. They will use you for protection if you have more gear or if you can help them or escort them; they are your best buddy until they can slot one in you lol

Couple of new spawns Ive helped when passing through electro etc have been friendly but if they was geared no doubt would of been different as had a sniper pop shots at a 3 man group as we passed through another time.

Once all the bugs are worked out and players can communicate and also have more content usable; meaning they have more to live for, maybe will make people less inclined to engage.

Tbh, i dont mind alot of PVP or even KOS at times cus in reality if shit goes tits up in the real world, Zombies not included, then I'm sure many groups and factions would fight for whats left anyway.

I like to always be friendly until attacked. I will hel peopl out if I see them. If I die though its nothing I know loot paths so all good. I just hate dumb teamates. If they screw up I immediately drop them

I hate Bullies so I like to take out Bandits. But I do always say hello and from the replies I can normally tell. But if someone sits up high over military zones then Iwill monitor thdm if they shoot at survivers then they have to be illiminated.

I'm into both , mainly bandit when with friends in a party due to the bugged ingame chat . But when I'm solo and someone has there gun on there back I'll try and talk to them and have given a few people 45. Pistols decked with silencers and hard cases with a knife, tactical bacon and a full hip flask . Fresh spawns on the coast love it, I just make sure to give them a gun and a mag & no bullets till I trust them or I'm leaving and drop ammo as I go .i try radios occasionally aswell as I've heard the odd survivor using them

As each and every reply comes in on this thread it seems more and more apparent how most people are misunderstanding the bandit or see the bandit playstyle different to how I see that it should/could be played.

People refer to a bandit by being a bland silent killer; well it is to some extent but there is so much more to it.

Majority of people say they play as a bandit by being in a party/not in game chat/with friends and they just go and KOS. I know the function to switch to game chat is broke but unless the mind set changes its still no good. Some people slate KOS and with that, especially on console, people are led to thinking that the KOS are bandits but in reality a proper bandit would hold people up, take their gear, tie um up and potentially leave them for dead. I know its still not really a great 30 minutes of fun for the victim but without those crazy scenarios happening it doesnt make for a very gritty, post apocalyptic world. I cant think of much more thats not more unforgiving than being left unclothed, gear-less with a burlap sack to keep your ears warm whilst your surrounded by raw meat in the forest.

Yeeepp. Even when your peaceful. I locked myself in a building and tried to have a chat with these 2 guys but the moment I start talking they are running around looking for me. They realize where im at as im continuously trying to talk. They proceed to look around town for a lockpick and open the door. I warn them listen ill get atleast one of you I promise. One guy server hops into a room behind me as the other guy comes in the door needless to say they regretted the server hop as the one guys gun broke and the other guy was face down in the dirt. I warned you. Dont gotta always fight i was just there for a scope the rest of the loot was all theirs but nope now its all mine including theirs :p

Problem there could be the fact they are in the party together; meaning they cant reply. Not saying they wouldnt of tried to kill you but its just going to be so much better once you can switch between.

Nice kills!

I find the feeling so much more rewarding when you can speak and part ways this only happened a few times for a brief second hardly geared new spawns. If they have any weapon worth while you go down hard. I was walking through one of the north east coast towns and get instant red screen. Just heard the silenced m4. Theres nothing more upsetting then never seeing it coming. Makes you work that much harder to stay safe next time

Finally found someone who talked. I was sketched at first so of course use that amazing lockpick and talk through a locked door lol. He claimed to be leaving so I watched him leave behind a wall only I never seen him go into the woods or through the field so I knew something was up. Unlocked door ran through some buildings and hid in a shack. Sure enough heres the "peaceful" guy who was "leaving" trying to hunt me down. Cant have that so I say thought you were leaving and before he could turn around he was turned into swiss cheese. Sorry not sorry

I’ve recently ran into a couple of geared players. Once with a team member, and once solo.

When I was with my friend, he spotted the guy as we were leaving the police station at Novo. Of course, he didn’t have a mic, but used the hello emote. I noticed his pistol out and ordered he holster it, which he did. His hands were bloody, and other than putting is pistol away, he did t react to any other cues. We told him to take off since he didn’t have a mic, we watched him work his way up into the woods. Then, my friend noticed he was lingering in the tree line with his Mosin aimed toward us.

We had a couple of zombies fighting a wolf right next to the police station, so  I shot the wolf and zombies, then went out to skin the wolf. Wouldn’t you know it, the guy is back next to the slain wolf with his hand up. This time, I aimed my m4 at his head and told him he better lay prone if he can hear us, which he did. Now knowing he was able to hear us fine, I told him he really needs to take off since he has no mic, and for acting so suspicious. He seemed all too happy to comply..

My second encounter when I was solo was at the northern military base. I briefly caught a glimpse of a guy as he ran into a tent. I repositioned around a barrier to get better cover and sights on him. I said hello, and asked if he was friendly. I then see him walk out of the tent with his hand up, m4 in the other. After telling him to holster his m4, he just drops it to the ground..even better. I approached him and asked if he had a mic, shaking his head no, of course.. I could tell, even without talking, that this person was somewhat trustworthy. I told god m to go ahead and pick his rifle back up. After a few more words and a thumbs up, we headed our separate ways.

These stories are perhaps a bit long winded, though I feel they are important glimpses into the types of experiences one can have when they use their head, instead of listening to their itchy trigger finger. Encounters like this could have rippling affects upon other survivors. Maybe one of those guys starts to use their mic, and decides not to kos, but be more diplomatic in their approach.
