They could act as "boosters", but later would develop addiction which means if you wont smoke ur stamina will be lower etc for some period of time till it resets if you go cold turkey, but if you continue, you will keep being "boosted" till the "boost" slowly decreases after each session to normal and later will cause death if continued ( e.g. 20h of gameplay ).

yes...if anyday,there gonna be happiness meter or something like that,this would must be in...
think when you have travel long distanced,avoiding murderers and sick people...you see good view...
you stop there to make fire...drink some coffee and smoke gigarette....happy...apocalypse is not that bad in that moment.

And, do not forget the vodka ..... as salvation / pain and general Fun & Happyness drink .... with increasing blur effect to the consumption amount.

Nothing would be more effective than defeating someone who wanted to unsuccessfully conquer you, put him in chains and put him down with vodka so you can untie him and easy your way .... as he tries to follow you like an infected man ,

I hate cigarettes, I despise smokers in their property as smokers. I don't smoke and I wouldn't smoke even if I saw a second "dinosaur asteroid" coming in a few minutes.

If you were in DayZ world for real, i bet that would change ur mindset, however i think its hard to implement such things, because of various laws ( DayZ could get banned in some countries because of that, unless they know some approach to fix that e.g. the dying thing i've mentioned, most games has no drugs etc in it because it affects ppl in wrong way, but what if game shows the bad things about it, also giving some boost ? ). 
Even if you hate smoking so much, you would be healthy ingame! :D

yeah..its quite dilemma in games that you cant have drugs,gigarettes or porn but you can hit with the hammer in head of your friend when grilling chickens:D

I tell ya, smokes would hardly 'boost' your stamina :D may help with calming the shaking hands after you've obtained some human steaks.

:edit: May also increase aggression when left without any :D

Still hoping for many features that were announced a while ago to make it into the game eventually.

Different kind of smoking and alcohol were announced but still haven't made it past the items/textures in the game. The files are there, but no effects are programmed yet.

Steroids, Methamphetamines, Fenethylline, Huperzine A, Modafinil, Methylphenidate, Phosphatidylserine, Night Eagle (..duh.. is that STILL classified?) Uridine monophosphate, & local anesthetics, narcotics, food supplements & sleeping pills..    - all stuff you'll find supplied around camp, folks.  On the other hand, battlefield tests show that smoking is unlucky.
