RTX 2015 Presentation Slides

Recommended Posts

There was no audio for the live stream of Hicks' presentation at RTX 2015, so I watched and kept an eye on the slides. Within the next few days a video should be up that includes audio, but that's out of my control. For now, I have screencaps of the slides that were shown along with transcribed text that's *much* easier to read.

Future Goals:

htevIu7.png

* DayZ will support Steam Workshop as its primary method of mod distribution and installation.

* Single Player (64 Bit client only) will be supported as an offline mode that in addition to allowing offline play, will allow mod authors  to test their work without the need of a server (in most cases).

* DayZ Server Package will be released on Steam approximately when DayZ reaches its Beta milestone.

Coming in 0.59:

qxPrccl.png

* Expanding on the existing 0.58 vehicle repair/maintenance mechanics

* Bug fixes focused on quality-of-life playability
*** Animation glitching
*** New inventory related issues
*** Increasing quantity of animals throughout Chernarus

* Extending server uptime up to 24 hours

* Introducing new vehicles into the world

* And much more

Base Building:

xEH5F0c.png

* Lets talk Base Building!

* DayZ has expanded the limited base building options that DayZ Mod presented
*** Currently 3 types of tents
*** Barrels for multiple uses:
***** Storage
***** Fireplace / Lighting
***** Clothing Dye / Leather Tanning
***** Storing fluids (future addition)
*** Upgradeable Fireplaces
*** Horticulture / Farming
*** Containers / Backpacks

I6LsXZS.png

* Its not a base without walls!

* We need to support an easy way for survivors to "refresh" large base areas rather than have to interact with each item

* No base is impenetrable

n9qPeVe.png

--------

MzQdfHO.png

Character Lifespan & Soft Skills:

54iDzRe.png

* It is a well known fact that in DayZ -- you should not get attached to your gear

* However this led to the value of a character itself being trivial, once he lost his gear

* Soft skills, and character lifespan is intended to help curtail this

* Character lifespan will provide a visual representation of the age of a players character

* Soft skills will allow for users to grow "what their character is" while being very careful to *never* use a skill in place of player ability

Thanks for doing the work Tatanko. Nice to hear "Increasing quantity of animals throughout Chernarus in .59" and "while being very careful to *never* use a skill in place of player ability".

Besides that really nothing that we haven't heard before. <_<

It was nice to see them reaffirm commitment to certain things and give us a better idea of what their end goals are in some areas. Wishing we had a better view of those concept drawings for base building :(

You missed the best slide of the night!

GJ7TXIG.jpg

Amazed that the RoosterTeeth people could screw this up so badly.

The best part is what their Director of Technology tweeted yesterday:

He wasn't wrong.

Yeah, the one looks like HESCO barriers, right? How would we build that?

if they are the recoverable style ones im sure you could just open it up and empty it out then relocate and fill it up again. would be a ton of work but do-able.

but then all someone has to do is open them up and let them empty so the owner of the base would have to keep filling it up again and again lol

Bases look pretty much like I was expecting, given the info we've had in the past.  Will be interesting if there's any actual new information or solid details with the audio.

My only concern with that sort of set up, which is really just a fortified camp, is how vulnerable it will be to helicopters once they're in.  Guess we'll have to wait and see how that's handled.

**

Thinking about it a little more I guess there's some solutions to helicopters, like being able to build posts (could be light posts even so they serve a greater function) to make landing/hovering over the camp difficult.

There's also presumably the ability to just build your camp in the woods, which would make a pretty good defense against them.

Assuming you'll still be able to parachute, I reckon people will still find their way in though and then shennanigans will ensue even if they're locked in, of stuff like just throwing items over the fence then suiciding =P

Base building is just one of those extremely difficult things to balance, but hopefully it'll be more than just tents with a wall so you can actually secure your stuff better.  It should of course always be vulnerable, I'm just spitting ideas of how helicopters potentially make this style too vulnerable.

i think those who were dreading the "h1z1" scrap-bases-all-over-the-place-look will be very disappointed with those base screen shots.

HIZI bases are butt-ugly, all cubic. From what I read on reddit there are dozens of ways of blocking entrance with stupid items like furnaces, sleeping places, barbecues and things like that.

I'm disappointed that zombies were not mentioned, like devs don't even try to fix them

I don't think we'll be let down with the end result :)

What about the new renderer and zombies?

Those topics were never intended for today's presentation.

My favorite parts is the soft skills tied to that alive character. Giving people a reason to value life. So awesome when you have something real to lose other than gear.

Thank you guys for all your hard work, I know people are tripping right now and getting upset over stable/test, but that is all old stuff and they just don't get it, they want it now! I look forward to the things you will accomplish when your new scripting engine is in place, and your whole team can work on just that platform. And not have to focus on developing a new engine AND keeping a playable game for all the people that had no idea what they where buying into are satisfied.

I am excited, but I really hope we don't get the ridiculous "Epoch" style basebuilding. *Shivers*

So they didn't say anything? They should, they are the most important problems Dayz has.

And you are wrong, the new renderer was indeed intended for today's presentation:

"Lead Producer Brian Hicks will be speaking at RTX 2015 - discussing the plans for apocalyptic Chernarus moving into the end of the year. From expanded base building options, new vehicles, modding support, character soft skills, and upcoming engine changes Brian will discuss and demo some of the upcoming changes to the post apocalyptic survival simulator DayZ. Q&A to follow!"

I understand they need their time, but there seems to be a bit of secretism surrounding those two topics which should be now the biggest concern for them. And for you the fans, by the way.

I'm not. Dude, their company name is Rooster Teeth FFS. Like who signed off on that.

RTX looked like some serious amateurs. For starters, they had audio sync issues for hours before Hicks. Secondly, how old are those cams? That menu looked over 20 years old like they signed them out of a university film lab or something. Lastly, whoever accessed that cam needs to be fired. The first thing an audio engineer should do is check the cables and we didn't get that. How do I know? Because you could hear the plug buzzing.

What I think happened is the plug got pulled out by some cosplay weirdo but only pulled it out so it wasn't making contact and appeared to be plugged in. Reason I think this is, I heard the jack being manipulated before the presentation as it was buzzing in a controlled fashion bouncing off the female end of the device.

I'm going to reserve my comments about base building until Hicks gets that video up.

"Engine changes" doesn't necessarily mean the new renderer , the engine is much bigger than just the renderer ;) .

The renderer is the most problematic problem right now, one of the two reasons this game is not working right now the other one being zombies, and therefore the biggest part (in terms of importance) of the engine ;) . You should stop defending them and acting as fanboys. Just an advice.

I really hope to be wrong and I still wait for this game to become a playable game. Yeah, it is an alpha, an alpha with two major problems about which we are not receiving any news.

 You're being serious?

What does the renderer have to do with CLE? Nothing. CLE is the most problematic right now and is why the player count is down.

FACT: People defending the devs (who haven't really fucked up big yet) are the minority. Haters like yourself are the majority and a dime a dozen. I'm sick and tired of coming to this forum and reading the constant hate. If you stop hating, maybe it'll have a positive impact on what the devs are doing?

I couldn't imagine being in the devs shoes and listening to the same generic ass cookie cutter hate related responses. Mind numbing...

I am not a hater. I played Vanilla Dayz Mod for hundreds (probably more than a thousand) of hours. That means I like all the decisions they made with the mod, and I also like all the ideas they have for the game.

You can review my past posts to check this. I have logged in after a while to ask about what I think is the biggest problem Dayz has now: performance.

That said, my apologies. I should read what you have to say about the game. What is CLE?

Thank you.

By the way, I should also say I particularly like the idea of your playable character having skills that develop with time, so that objects are not the only thing that defines your character. This will certainly help with certain problems like people in clans which have spare items not appreciating their lives.

What is CLE?

CLE stands for Central Loot Economly.  If you haven't even done the assigned reading for the past three months, perhaps you should reserve your judgements until you can make them from a more well-informed perspective.  Things are getting done, just maybe not in the order that many people want to see.  But those people aren't doing the work, so my sympathy falls flat.

Zombies are in the game, just not in great numbers, and definitely not respawning.  If you go and explore, you would occasionally get scared by a couple because of your guard having been let down due to zed scarcity.  Trust me, it's a real treat getting surprised inside a building; even more so if you fire a gun.

Everybody play nice, now ;)

Judgement should be reserved for when the full presentation is made available. This is just a "teaser" of sorts, nothing more.
