Respect the Game

Recommended Posts

It has been a long while since I actually dreamed about a game when I fell asleep.

I just started DayZ two weeks ago and just had my main character die of infected wounds this morning after about 70-80 hours of gameplay. I had been using an AKM with the 75 round drum, scope, suppressor, and a Makarov 70 pistol because the ammo is so plentiful. I had done a loop of the whole map using a few vehicles and a few pairs of shoes and was back on the coast after finding some of the coolest gear: Ballistic helmet, High capacity vest, hunting backpack... My goal when I died was to start combing the shores looking for new players to help out and go on a zombie-killing spree in big cities while looking for the handguard for my AKM.

Then.... I got bit like I had been bit a dozen or more times before and after stitching up I saw that I was "sick" and had time to look through three hospitals in Chernokorsky and Novoselky for alcohol tincture. I had previously owned (and thrown away) several bottles of the tincture and seen hundreds of medical items that I eventually chucked on the ground to make room for all the ammo I had been finding for my two weapons. I didn't even know there was a "sick" status because I am so new to the game and so when I fell unconscious from either the advanced state of the infection or the dehydration caused by it, I had to stop and think for a few minutes.

My point for all this storytelling is just this: I really liked this game before but now I love it. It is so much more pure than anything that can be had anywhere else. The only thing that even comes close is the early days of Everquest (I am old) when the economy of the game was so hard and strong you could get paid for casting spells. It all pales in comparison to spending 15 minutes trying to get a roaring fire because you got your clothes wet getting water from pond and you are shaking so bad that your AKM scope is jittering all over the zombies you are keeping an eye on out in a nearby field.

I suppose if you are reading this you already know why DayZ is awesome, I just wanted to throw my experience out there. To all the DayZ team I'd just say this: Don't compromise on your vision (Hardcore Survival) and keep doing what you're doing. This game ROCKS!

DayZ and ArmA generally were the games me and my friend had the best experiences and memories in.

Are you sure you got the infection because of bites? I never gor sick before getting hit by zombies. I did however get sick from drinking untreated natural water, the water purification pill is now in function. Also made me die of dehydration, no matter how much water I drank.

Oh ok, didn't know that was in now. So is the treatment alcohol tincture?

Yeah, you gotta clean the wounds with it, but don't drink it, you will die.

This or you can try the tablets, I forgot the name, not charcoals but the other ones.

Yep. If I remember correctly the progression was:

  • I noticed I was sick
  • There was a message saying my wounds itched (in red text)
  • Messages saying I was warm
  • Message saying my wounds were severely infected
  • Message saying I was hot

Now I had early on learned to hoarde water and recently made a habit of going out of my way to stop by water wells and fill up to "Hydrated" but at the time I got bit and infected I was down to two and a third canteens of water in my inventory. After the onset of the fever, I was out of water in about 20-25 minutes of game playing and thirsty.

One of my lessons learned will be to have a better essential medical supplies and take zombie bites a little more seriously. Before dying, I had begun to think the zombie attacks were almost lame because of how easy it was to recover from them.

Last thought: when I got infected I was fighting 3 zombies (I stupidly had my pistol equipped instead of my AKM and ran out of ammo). Maybe it was the number of untreated bites that caused the infection?

My toon dates back to June of 2000 I think. I was a wizard, I got paid to port people. I even ported entire raids into PoH and PoA when they had no wizards available (for free). This is also the first game since EQ that has my attention in a similar way that EQ did... but the best part is you *can* play DayZ for hours on end but you can also accomplish something in 10-15 mins and log out, whereas that was next to impossible in EQ unless you were logging in to check on a spawn quick or something. What server did you play on?

Do you know if the antibiotics actually work/help? I always chuck those assuming they're useless.

So.... I've done some more research on this and according to the Wiki you stand a 15-20% chance of getting infected wounds from stitching up bleeding with a sewing kit or leather sewing kit. I did this. Pristine bandanges (purified by alcohol) are safer but I had ditched bandages to to save inventory space. Whoops. I've learned that to have a long-term survival I will need to take the medical element to this game, even playing solo, more seriously.

As far was what's up with my 2nd incarnation, I realized that using a Makarov for a secondary weapon is dumber than dumb, even if the ammo is laying around everywhere. A sidearm with only 8 shots is just asking for trouble, especially if is in defense to put down a zombie in the middle of a city, which calls more. I have since changed to using both the CR75 and FNX 45 as sidearms (still have an AMK as primary) because they have 15 round clips. Doing another lap of the map and keeping a log on my zombie kill camp, too. When arriving at a new city I hydrate, grab supplies, look for rare loot, and then stand in town center and shoot one round in the air to draw out the hoarde. My record is 7 zombies in one spot after calling them down on me to exact my revenge. I put down 23 today.

Not sure how long it will take me to find the 75-round drum for the AKM that I lost but until I do the zombies will pay...

Yup. As you found out now, you didn't get sick because of the bites.

You got sick because you used the sewing kit to stop the bleeding.

Most in DayZ is common sense, but it is fun to discover all this stuff step by step.

Yes they work. I got sick drinking pond water and got cholera. I was losing hydration faster than I could lose my stuffed status. Ate antibiotics every 10 mins or so for some time and it finally went away.

Sewing kits will infect your wounds.  When I first started playing on .51, I exclusively used sewing kits to patch myself up; until about the tenth time, when I got an infection.  It just seemed more badass than tying a rag around the wound.  And honestly, a rag is only a viable fix for extremities, unless you have a good roll of duct tape to hold it on.  Would like to eventually see the game get to the point where applying alcohol or disinfectant to a sewing kit can craft the item "sterile sewing kit;" just make sure to keep it in a first aid kit if you plan on swimming or wading in dirty water.  IRL, I routinely use dirt, yarrow, or napkins and duct tape to patch myself up; as I am failry reckless in my bush maneuvers while hiking and fishing.  Luckily, I'm not very prone to infection, though this may be due to a fair amount of exposure therapy--another feature that will hopefully be added to the game.

Ahh, exposure therapy. So glad I grew up a dirty hillbilly kid before hand sanitizer and germophobic Facebook MD moms.

How did you consume the water? Best way to drink it is by using the PET bottle. For each ml of water it fills your stomach 0,5 ml. So you can drink twice as much because a water pump is 1/1ml. Edited by IMT
