I'm curious about people's apple/berry picking technique..how do you do it?

I... search each tree twice, once kneeling, once standing and then move to the next whether i find anything or not.  (I find something 1 in 5 I'd guess. I have no reason for this method apart from it seems logical to me!)

Moving to a different tree does not seem to provide any benefit. It's not unusual to have 5-6 failures in a row, before getting another apple.

I generally squat under the tree, not because it improves my apple-picking odds, but because I want to minimize the target that I present to others.

I search every tree or bush 4 times, and if nothing move to next. Sometimes I get 3 or 4 apples from one tree in 10 or so tries. I noticed berries have lots of calories. Few apples and 2 berries got me from orange hungry to neutral.

Agreed. I have the distinct feeling that they are testing / gathering data on this, at the very least. That, or perhaps it's a side effect of accelerated time. Has anyone been paying attention to server time? I generally don't look at the time when I hop off, so I don't know if the elapsed time is still 1:1 on all of these servers.

It used to be that once my status indicators were all lime green, it was relatively easy to get the stuffed indicator and that status would linger longer than it currently does. Now, I seem to be drinking a full water bottle every fifteen minutes, or so and I don't ever sprint anywhere. I need to time this, to see if it is just a mis-perception.

The way I treat dehydration: as soon as I get dark green hydrated I drink until I am light green hydrated and I drink 5 times (500 ml). This gets my water at 4000 ml which is the maximum.

If my calculations are correct, you can jog 8 to 9 minutes from light green to dark green hydrated. So I would guess 55 ml per minute when jogging. Not sure about that though, testing it is difficult.

There are so many variables which can affect the results. I do know that you need to drink 500 ml water as soon as you get light green hydrated. I always drank until I was orange stuffed but that is way overkill. Better to safe the stomach contents for food.

Moving to a different tree does not seem to provide any benefit. It's not unusual to have 5-6 failures in a row, before getting another apple.

I had the idea that when you picked a lot of apples your chance does highly decrease. Yesterday I had 30 times nothing found in a row, that was really frustating for me.

I could be wrong with this theory though.

I've seen a bunch of survival tips here, but as a contrast to all the apple-picking suggestions I want to say few words about me previous survival attempts on .56:

I haven't died from starvation a single time.

I haven't spent any time picking berries or apples. I find those activities utterly boring. If a time will come that 20mins of using a apple tree will be needed to survive, I will quit.

I haven't seen a single animal in .56 so that should give you an idea how much hunting I've done.

I haven't bothered with fishing either.

No rabbit snares used, no fish traps.

I sprint all the time. If someone tells you to start walking everywhere - that person has too much free time.

Just be time efficient and try to think outside of the box.

Check the building with closed doors first - yeah, it still works.

Check all the places that majority of morons ignore. Deerstands, any shitty building that is sitting alone in the wild and is far from the main road.

Elektro spawn doesn't mean - time to check all the buildings. The are plenty of them, so maybe someone missed some loot. Elektro spawn means - time to gtfo.

If you don't feel like walking long distance and spamming use on trees - there is still hope for you.

Kudo to you brother, now do the following. Go to Steam, right click DayZ and click Properties. Go to Contents and Remove the game. Surviving in nature will become more and more viable the more the game progresses.

If you can't live with that then you already can uninstall it.

I don't know if CLE is currently done but I guess that there will be less food, guns, etc.

It's a survival game and with canned and dry food lying everywhere it isn't a survival game anymore.

Holy f% Batman! I can't say as I've seen it that bad. I think the most I've ever gone between apples is 8-10 times. That would test, even my patience!!!

Whoever the bastard who jumped out on me by the Lopatino garages (just south of the village) was, thank you very much for nearly giving me a heart attack.

Also, thank you for not shooting me as I cried friendly and ran away sloppily. Not sure whether you tried or not, you were aiming at me, but I heard no gunshots. Either way, thanks for keeping me on my toes. I started recording a video series last night and it would have really sucked to have lost my character for it off video. :P I just needed dem cargo pants. Only place I've seen them so far.

This was on the UK 2 0-1 server not ten minutes ago.

EDIT: Actually, that's a question that I really, really want to ask everybody.

How are you all doing for six slot pants? The only ones I've found this entire time are cargo pants - and those have only been in the large garage buildings (the ones that can get buses in them). I've not seen any hunter pants, ttsko pants or anything anywhere else. I have searched a fair few military places too, though many of them seemed to have been looted already. But not a single pair of pants.

I've seen a tonne of canvas pants and jeans though, which is annoying. Especially when I find hunter jackets and M65 jackets regularly in certain buildings, but never a good pair of pants.

My summery of 4 hour gameplay: Enjoyable.

Spawned way NE.  Been moving slowly along very north of map.  Lots of decent loot for me: Wire x3, Hatchet, Mosin with clip, Pot & Pan! rope, knife, can opener, shovel, seeds x3 types, bottle x2, canteen x2, gas cooker & gas, large wetbag , press vest, green skate helmet & hunter jacket

And I haven't even past west of Novo yet (or been into it)

Only thing I'm really missing is matches.  (6 slot trousers & high capacity vest would be a bonus!)

Major bugs:

Accidental dupping.. i've duplicated several weapons & other items by mistake.

Items disappearing when interacting.

No infected. (not really a bug)

The garages - that's the only place that I've seen them. I went to the tent base @ Myshkino a couple of days ago and I didn't see a single pair of MIL-spec pants.

Ha, can't wait till the game becomes actually difficult and you can't cheat your way into hydrated/energized status by abusing apple trees and berry bushes.

We'll see who will delete the game first then.

Folks have been complaining about the lack of wildlife. I'm not saying that they are plentiful, but I just saw a cow a little ways West of Dubrovka. So, there are at least some animals still wandering around.

Frying pans are clearly the cause of the server crashes (at least one of them). Just remove them until the issue is solved

I'm sorry to bring it to you mate but if they are going to tone down the apple and berries seriously, they will need to do with the canned and dry goods aswell.

It's called balancing. Even the developers said it theirself, the game has to be hard and tactical. You need to consider if you want to take a shot or not, you need to make critical decisions, etc.

And to be honest, I guess I will not be the first one uninstalling because I can live both ways of looting food and making my own food. Guess my character is a grown up man. :D

I'm wondering when we'll see 0.57 builds, especially considering the loosely-stated goal of updating Stable this coming Wednesday. I'm wondering if they'll even call it 0.57, since all they said was that 0.56 was being rolled into 0.57 (or was it vice versa?).

I've never maintained that one needs to forage to survive and certainly not for 20 minutes. I specifically advise against this in my thread on the subject. But if people are starving to death or otherwise having difficulty, foraging is the most dependable and universally available strategy to offer people. Doing what you're doing is not the most helpful advice to a new player not familiar with the map or what buildings people frequently visit. Specifically, foraging is particularly useful in disproving the claim that it's impossible not to die by starvation.

I love that there are people out there that are expert scavengers but that's not the only way to play just as living off the land is not. Dismissing a perfectly legitimate and useful strategy to get energy from foraging by describing it as "spamming use on trees" is rude at best.

Haha no , but if you look at who Ebrim was quoting and what he said , Ebrim was responding to the kids stupidity (and it is just that) of foraging ... Kiddies like sniperZ are all mad cuz they die when they look for berries so he's trying to misinform people by telling them to sprint everywhere and forget about berries , berries save lives you fools !!!

The consumption of food and the depletion of nutrients shouldn't be so extreme though. Eating just half of a steak, chicken, or whatever meat you find should be more than enough to hold you over for awhile. Hopefully they balance it a little more although i think the reason we deplete water and food so fast is for testing purposes. All i know is if i were to consume that much food and water in real life i wouldn't have to worry about anything for about 6 hours or more.

Lets say a male needs 2500kcal/day, just to have a figure. Now how much does a male need who is running around all day with all the gear we carry, who's body creates additional heat if neccessary to fight the elements he is continuously exposed to. Or a body who tries to cool down with sweating? Also takes energy... . I read somewhere that ppl who work in extreme conditions can use up to 6000kcal/day.

Then there is survival. Yes, you can survive on less, but you loose body mass and are not as able to perform as well physically, maybe even mentally depending on the amount of food you get. Are we getting weaker in the game, slower after surviving a few weeks with a lucky character? No, and I hope that will not be implemented either, it would be an incentive to suicide from time to time to get the perks of a freshspawn back.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think the food mechanics are perfect right now, but even irl half a steak for 6h is harsh. That makes 2 steaks for 24h, most males would loose body mass with such a diet pretty fast, even if they do nothing but sit around all day. Running around all the time and enduring the environment not even included.

Also we are not going for realism. Imagine the price for beef, if all you could get out of a cow is 4 steaks...or how big a group you could actually feed for lets say a week with a cow. This is a game. Reducing needed food as well as food on the map ... will that lead to a better game mechanics? If the time intervals between finding food get bigger and the food keeps us going longer, how would that work out for fresh spawns - find something and be done for 10 ingame hours with food or find nothing and pick apples again and again until you finally find something, be it cans or something for horticultre? Would that be better gameplay? Let's not even think about the ingame time it takes to grow pumpkins concerning realism here.

I'm curious about people's apple/berry picking technique..how do you do it?

I... search each tree twice, once kneeling, once standing and then move to the next whether i find anything or not.  (I find something 1 in 5 I'd guess. I have no reason for this method apart from it seems logical to me!)

General opinion imo is that it is simply a numbers game, you search for apples and with a certain chance, you get one. Maybe it is a little more sophisticated, but picking the same tree again and again is all I ever do. Sometimes I pick up to 10+ apples, I never saw a tree that was all of a sudden "empty". Also never had the impressions that chances go back when a tree is plucked for a while. I always search for a somewhat hidden tree and crouch, that's my technique ;)

SNAP

THE DRAGON

"If a time will come that 20mins of using a apple tree will be needed to survive, I will quit." does not have anything to do with your statement of "Surviving in nature will become more and more viable the more the game progresses." And nothing else he said either. Should such a time come, he will not be the only one quitting the game, a few servers per continent will then probably be enough, ergo ... that will not happen. Maybe you should uninstall the game. Might be more reasonable than telling someone who can manage without apple picking orgies to uninstall it in such a tone.

And never forget that we might have already experienced some of the "worst" loot situations, after all Hicks said at the beginning of the new cle experiments that loot is "supposed to be rare, not -that- rare" (https://twitter.com/hicks_206/status/587668835567804416). I do not know if that statement was only for the more harsh private shard situation or also public, but at the time most private shard servers still had some loot to live with. Still remember the char I played then.

It was only for private shard servers and -some- messed up publics (but I never saw evidence myself of the publics being empty) this was about last month , around tatankos April social, I remember because they were tweaking the loot to be more plentiful the day before we had the social ... So that tweet no longer applies to the current experimental , and definitely not for the current stable , but in a tweet just two days ago hicks said "of course the CLE is still not working as fully intended , we still have months to complete it" or something like that , so although loot isn't necessarily as scarce as when they first added CLE , the loot is definitely being distributed too slowy and too far apart / in very weird areas (and not to mention the lootsplosions that still happen). So CLE is slowly gettin there but point is , at least it's not as messed up as when they introduced it about a month ago !

I know that is does not apply to the current patch, I just wanted to point out that we already had situations with little loot (less than now) where Hicks said that so little is not intended. I managed to survive and later on even found quite a bit. Was managable. Thx for the info about it only being about private shards.

It will take months to get to the point where they want the cle, but even when done, I would be very supprised if they won't continue to play with the numbers.
