What to do with the edges of the map?

What would you like to see?

    • Create a river that is uncrossable

    • Fade the greenery into desert after which an algorithm creates repeating dunes

I am sure I don't need to explain what the edge of the map looks like, but for those who have never ventured there (and who knows there might be), here is a thumbnail..

(click for bigger image - although why you would need one is beyond me)

Ok, so now we all know what it looks like, what is your opinion on it. I'll admit I don't have any in depth knowledge of the game engine that gives me an insight into how easy it is to change what happens here. Perhaps the "hard edge" that we have now is both the most efficient way of dealing with the edge, or perhaps it's the only way to deal with it.

For me, though, I find it a real breaking of the fourth wall moment when I encounter it. Of course there is always a trade off between realism and practicalities, but I would like to think there are better options than what there is now. I've listed some options in a poll but if you have a better idea please add it into the thread.

Now, of the options two of them (water/mountains and cliffs) are based around stopping the user accessing the area beyond the map which, when aircraft are introduced, may be a problem while two of them relate to a repeating algorithm to generate a repeating landscape and I'm thinking something like the way Minecraft can do it from one seed.

Anyway, let's see what is the most popular option, or what innovative ideas others can come up with.

I like it.  That's where I go to smoke fat blunts while dreaming of world peace.

I would do that in the forest or on a hillside, at least there you have a view. In "purgatory" there's nothing to admire while you have a smoke.

I suppose you don't need to worry about someone creeping up on you though.

There should be invisible (or slightly visible) wall which crossed instantly kills you. So that nobody would put a tent here etc. Yeah, I think it would work :)

Well, now that we can cut people up and take their innards, I guess I'll start using the edge of the map to drop their insides, while using their skin as a blunt wrap  :o

I like the desert idea because it's basically what we have with a dash of context to help prop up your "4th wall".

I remember Dean saying he wanted to make DayZ maps for other regions of the world.

US style map, Asian region map, African region map, etc.

With the addition of rocks/cliffs we could be provided a means (like access points near debug) to migrate characters through borders (on land and off).

That would be neat but I'm fairly positive that this is something the devs/Rocket are not interested in.

A simple debug forrest behind a barrier of rocks, lakes, rivers, fences, walls, mine fields and contaminated areas.....

How about NATO/Russian soldiers at an iron curtain of sorts, keeping a quarantine?

I've been to the edge man.....I was there yesterday-

Actually I'd like a mix of the suggestions- one side is an impassable river, the other side cliff face. Another side mountain or super dense forest that is impassable.

Something to make it look to the player that the world goes on forever but you just can't get there is the key-

You can have highways that are destroyed and impassable, wreckage or something. They did this alot in skyrim and fallout 3- most areas were blocked with mountains, rubble debris, closed off roads, waterfalls, rivers, etc etc

I also like the idea of an increasing number of zombie spawns that are triggered at the edge that can kill you

They should just put up some signs that say "Welcome to Iowa".

Immersion restored.

Really wish they would turn chenarus plus into an island.

Add a coast to all that empty land then add coastal spawns around the entire map

I understand why people might want to see it turned into an island but doesn't that go against the backstory?

My preferred option would be cliffs with maybe a deep ravine that can't be climbed down into and out of. Perhaps turning Grozovoy Pass into some sort of heavily fortified border post so you could turn that into the one passage way out of the area, allowing for further map expansion (or new maps) later on.

I don't think people are that attached to "The Backstory" but I don't like the island idea.

I like the idea of either a wall of zombies or insta-death barrier; Call it a minefield.

Or if we ever get AI, never ending waves of AI mercs to hunt down anyone who would dare venture into the forbidden zone.
