In-Game Map vs Online Map

Recommended Posts

Whenever I play I have an online map of Chernos (I like the iSurvive one I think it is) on one screen while I've got the game on another.  This has worked REALLY well for me even though I need to alt-tab to zoom or change the view on the online map.  I know there are in-game maps that you can even combine to form a complete map.  I also know that you can annotate the in-game map.  But other than this, is there any advantages to the in-game map at all?  If anything, it certainly takes up precious cargo space.  (And I know not everyone rocks dual monitors but you can just as easily throw up the online map on your smart phone or tablet.)

Many consider maps outside the game itself cheating. (Finding out where you at is part of the survival aspect of the game.)

However, I prefer in-game map myself anyway because I get my head knawed off significantly less.

Also, even with all the maps put together, it only takes up 1 inventory space.

I never use in-game maps. Go to safety, alt-tab the game and enjoy.
I consider the iZurvive satellite map the best of all I've seen. Highly recommended.

There is nothing wrong with using an online map, in game map or map you've printed.  If people think that using the online map is cheating, they should look at all games.  Online guides, wiki's, walkthrough's, you name it, it's out there and people use them.

The ingame map is fun to put together. Can't you also drop markers on the map and label things? I think it is a cool feature to the game. I use my other monitor in page view so I have a huge map off to the side of me (topo from iZurvive) whenever I need it so I don't usually spend any time looking for the map pieces any more. <------- Cheater

Thats a really good point, Gecko, and I would tend to agree that using offline maps is somewhat cheating.  Caboose brings up a good point too about guides but I can see how using a map can be construed as cheating.

I'll still use it anyway lol.  I do wish iSurvive did a better job with the icons since it covers up a lot of the town name.  You can hide the icons but then you lose a lot of the infos on the town.  Now if anything, I'd consider that info an unfair advantage since you already know piano house coming up on the left, police station up the street there, etc etc.  I do notice though that while these online maps are ridiculously accurate down to a patch of shrubbery or random rock formation, I'm pretty sure the railroads relative to the street roads are sometimes off or switched.

That's the thing for me, I don't care about the icons, I use a map to navigate when I actually get lost.  I don't need an icon riddled map so I turn them off.

I refuse to use anything that isn't the ingame map solely for immersion. I don't like ruining the experience by tabbing out of the game. Plus you can keep running even with the map open while ingame, unlike when you tab out, so advantage to me! :P Other than immersion and being able to run though, their really is no point. It doesn't really matter to me what other people do, as long as you're not ruining the DayZ experience for others.

I don't like using online map

I don't like the split up ingame maps either :/

So, I just try to use a compass and memory, most of the time it works fine, even though much has changed the basics are there from the mod in my head.. New areas are a nice surprise this way too :)

Although I had one embarrassing moment last night leading 2 friends from pustoska to zelenogorsk through the woods and we went full circle and ended up back at pustoska industrial lol (my friend had the compass btw, I blame him!)

Really good point about still being able to see the game while you look at the map!!!  SO MANY times I lost track of time looking at the map, tab back to the game, only to find I'm surrounded by zeds having their way with me LOL!!!!

You, sir (or madam), are a bigger DayZ person than I ever will be.  Dude, I still manage to get lost while USING the map!!!!!  Often it's because I wander away from sight of the road and end up back on a different road without realizing it.  It can suck really bad.

well, i personally don't need any maps 60% of the time (Played too damn much on chernarus in the mod, arma 2 and Invasion 1944 mod for arma 2) but when i do, shift + Tab, use steam browser et voila !!

It is mainly to get the town names, get a refference from where i am, get my bearing on the compass and keep on going...

Worked pretty well and can work both without and with the map in-game... I just don't want to bother right now as im' trying to test the game and already know how the in-game map looks like !

When the game is minimum on beta i'll test the maps properly, but now, trying to explore new additions, find bugs and most importantly, test the gameplay's limitations !

I like the online map - both putting it together and actually using it. Its detailed enough but not overblown with information and it can be used while also using the autorun feature.

Good call.  I admit my alt-tabbing to get to the offline map sometimes throws my autorun feature off.  (Quite literally, it falls off lol.)

No one considers it cheating... it is just a reference. Also you don't have to alt tab, you can set it as your steam default browser page, then you pres shift tab, bam ingame map.

Asking people for medical help on the forums here is cheating, asking people where all the best loot spot are on the forums here is cheating, using the internet to get your information is cheating, hell, using these forums is cheating. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/214856-helicopter-crash-sites/

I wouldnt go as far as calling using an online map cheating but i would say your making your experience easier... So if you like easier in whats already a fairly easy survival run thus far by all means go ahead ,its a slippery slope once you start down the path of making things easier for you, before you know it you realize somewhere along the lines you stopped playing Dayz and some how your on a epoch server with 24/7 days and 1000's vehicles lol..

I use both. The ingame map is much more friendly its a full fledged map. But most of the time I use web. But I usually don't do that too, I already have the map in my head.

Real men (& gals) use in-game map.

You know, the way it's meant to be played, in the spirit of things !
