umm so if its a server with persistence you should be able to just log back on to that same server after the restart and then pick it up. provided it wasn't too damaged to remain that is.

Its strange how an item can be as common as for one person and a rare mystical treasure to another. I think this is all part of the evil plan that is dayz ,it knows what you want to find and thus doesnt spawn it or if it does it will will reset before you pick it up and finally when it lets you have said item after many days it will then spawn tons of them so everywhere you look you find one now you dont need it as a cosmic slap in the face.

aaaaarrrrrrggggg... I hear ya... Haven't found a can opener yet post-49.  I have a completed smersh vest/back pack, AKM, PSO1, 3 mags, full gorka, hunting, 357, ammo, couple morphines, flash and grenade.

 

Honestly given that food is not rare I really don't care, I will take the food loss to save a space in my pack.

Last night, 2AM.
I just made my way to the military base north of Balota. Found an AKM, already had 4 mags for it in my taloon backpack so I thought "Yahtzee!". I get out of the barrack and BAM..."No message received for 10 seconds..". Of course when I joined another server I was back with an SKS. Started to loot the place again, found a hunting backpack, dropped my 4 mags in it then put the backpack on me. In the next room I found a drum mag and in the room after, an AKM !!! Wow, another "Yahtzee!" I thought. Then I got out of the barrack and BAM..."No message received for 10 seconds,,,". Of course, I relogged and I was back with an SKS and a taloon backpack with no mags in it. I cried.

F*ck you Brian !

I think some players find different items more often then others because they know where to look...then look in those places for loot more often for that particular item. You learn where to go from experience.

 

Forget about can openers since just about anything with a blade on it opens cans. Does anyone know the 'spots' for matches??

are there actually designated "spots" for matches / can openers..? i'm pretty sure you just look in houses, and eventually you will find them.

 

i've found matches in pretty much every type of loot spawn i'm pretty sure. farm houses / barns, regular houses, fire stations...pretty sure i've even seen them in an ATC

Pre .49 it seemed I always had the best luck for can openers in either red brick pubs or military Jails.

I don't bother with those any more, except to pick them up on case anyone needs one. I use any tool, even my fire axe. There's enough cans around that i can afford to slip most of it. Us meat, berries, apple trees, and random fresh food is plentiful.

I found one (in trash, the big red warehouse), after 3 weeks if not mistaken (since the Great Wipe), damn, for me it's as precious as a smersh vest, from now I'll call it the smersh can opener.
