My first death.

Recommended Posts

So I had my first death in DayZ today, 30ish playtime hours in.  I had managed to get full military gear, an AKM (with all accessories, in pristine condition), a FNX 45 (also with all accessoriess, also fully pristine), two 300 round boxes, each one full of the respective gun's ammo, two magazines for my AKM, ten magazines for my FNX45, and was fully stocked on food / medical supplies.  The only thing I was lacking was a canteen, (and perhaps a couple extra AKM mags)  Thus I was looking around the sourthern military base, on a server with about 10 people or so.  Figuring that there might be a chance I'd run into someone, I had my mic on, and was making sure to talk about everything I was finding, so whoever was around would know i was there and not a bandit.  But then as I was moving from one tent to another, I hear the loud crack of a mosin, followed by a you are dead message.  Given it was just as loud as when I've fired one, I'd guess he was within at least 20-25, maybe 50 meters at most.  And probably heard me talking about my frustration in finding a canteen.

Total frustration there I'd say on my part.  Was so close to being fully geared to my wants.  Now, it's back to looting to try to get everything I had back again.

I don't know whether I love or hate this game, but I'm addicted nonetheless still.

At the same time I have to ask:  Why do you shoot on sight someone who is clearly not interested in other player's items, but is actively searching for a particular item.  And is well armed enough that if you had missed your shot and I managed to spot you before you reloaded, I would have either fired back (risking injury, especially at that close range), or going logscum and we both would have been fine?   I get it if you're after PvP... but why not with other PvP players instead of the looter/medic who just tries to defend themselves?

It is kind of an unwritten rule that strangers at military bases/airfields are to be killed on sight.

Making your presence known in that way was just not smart in that location, as said in military locations you will most likely be shot on sight.

BTW, I hope you do realise that having that much ammo / mags for your weapons is just a waste of inventory space. You will NEVER need that many rounds in a fire fight, unless you plan on camping for another 50 hours.

You will either die or have killed your opponent.

Don't worry.  Death comes easy in this game.   I think I've died more to fire station ladders than any single player.   It's just harder the longer your character lives.   That's for sure!

yeah, i've heard they tend to be shoot on sight, hence why I tried to make myself well... openly heard soas to (hopefully) give someone pause on the common shoot on sight policy.

Also, I'm a hoarder, so yeah :p  just kept running across ammo and mags, though mags were rare enough to find that i figured they'd be useful currency should I find someone to trade peacefully with me.  But that obviously didn't happen.  Generally speaking though, the amount of ammo I carried wasn't for a firefight, it was what i was stocking up on to from there avoid military sites for a god while after I found a canteen.  That was the plan, anyway.

I know the problem mate, when you finally find a fnx mag, and later the next and the next you tend to want to keep them since they are generally hard to find. In the end though I keep a max of 3 fnx mags, and 3 akm mags (30 round) and 1 ammo box with 80 45 acp and the rest 7.62. I mean you can find that ammo not exclusive to military locations, as long as you have the mags to begin with..

Never stop doing what you're doing. If 99 out of 100 people shoot you on sight, that one person you meet could change the way you think of this game drastically.

It's unwise to hoard military gear, though I understand why people do it.  So far the game doesn't offer much to do besides collect rare loot.  Personally, if I see someone wearing a full military outfit with a gas mask/helmet, I either steer clear or blast them. (some loot farmers cornered me, KoS isn't my style.)  The gear you outfit yourself with says a lot about the contents of your backpack, so if you're carrying an AK geared to LMG mode, full TTsKO/Gorka, mask/helmet, anyone who sees you is probably going to start salivating with the prospect of your goodies.    It's good that you tried to reach out and let people know you weren't interested in fighting, but a lot of times the best option is to just avoid those areas. No amount of high-end loot is worth losing everything.     Personally, I carry a stock AK, hunting backpack, hi-cap vest, blue jeans, baseball cap, and a fishing pole on my back.  Take up a hobby mate, whenever you feel the craving to go looting, dig up a handful of worms and go fish.  It's kinda relaxing and you have a much lower chance of coming down with sudden-death syndrome.

This is what happened to me and made me stay in the DayZ universe since it came out.

The AK is a bit too much pimped like that so I usually keep it on my back. Feels less threatening. Makes it easier to enter conversation with others instead of talking with bullets. I know it's very basic right now, and mostly placeholder, but I love fishing!!

Frankly I think having all the equipment you want is a bit of a downer. If I'm not looking for some matches or another clip or whatever I get this "now what?" feeling.

Anyhow, gonna be different when there are vehicles and such to focus on, but for now I need someone to shoot me in the face every once in a while to keep me entertained.

You, uh, did what?

I'd pop anyone who was going Gomer Pyle status and talking to their loot, too.
