Gender Discrimination and Prejudice

There is some discrimination so to say, female characters have a smaller hitbox and are less visible than my "welsh survivor" so I have female and male chars on my accounts. Besides that, when I see a girl I think either she is good at the game or well is something I don´t like to interact with. Since there is a possibility she is good I am careful and since I have a gaming wife who´s usually next to me I can´t be an dickhead even if I´d like to be - sometimes at least. :D 

After all I guess you are just a human being and human beings - not welshis and gingers - tend to remember the bad experiences more than the good ones. My wife is always raging that so many perverts and dickheads are playing in her team (not dayz) but I often see her playing with mannered/adult/welsh people as well so yeah, keep on playing.

Generally speaking, and please bare in mind that this is IMHO, I don't see much gender bias in game-play. My girlfriend plays with/runs my group and I have had encounters with a number of female players and I don't see them being treated very often as any different then male players.

 

Most KOS encounters are just that, KOS encounters and probably would have went down the exact same way if you had been a male.

I don’t know how to write this. Predominantly, I am worried that most will look at this with prejudice and that the term ‘attention whore’ will be thrown around.

 

I guess what I am trying to say is; please take this seriously, as it is in no way an attempt to seek attention of any kind. It is meant as a serious discussion on an issue, which has significantly ruined my gaming experience to the point at which I am considering giving up on this game entirely.

 

Although I am fairly new to this game, I have had my fair share of really bad experiences (KoS being the main one, but that is a discussion which is already going on). I am not sure whether this is just down to bad luck or simply bad gameplay by me.

 

Either way, what has bothered me the most (KoS aside) is the fact that most people are very discontented about the fact that I am a girl. Some have even accused me of using voice-changing software when they hear my voice even though I never bring attention to my gender.

 

Before anyone says, “it’s because you were a threat/bandit/mean/” that they mistreat you. I don’t play as a Bandit. Heck, for the most part I’ve been trying to play as a Medic/Hero although this hasn’t worked out very well so far. I am very nice and helpful to everyone I meet. Therefore, people have no reason for shooting me or mistreating me. In many cases, I am certain that if I had a male voice, people would be much nicer to me.

 

There was one time where a few minutes after re-spawning, I came across a big group of people (about 5-7) whom started shooting in my direction as soon as they saw me. I immediately went on to say, “Please don’t shoot. I do not have anything. I have just spawned” while holding my hands up. One of them walked right up to me and said, “It doesn’t help being a girl in this game, so bye.” Then he killed me.

 

I am so sick and tired of people assuming that I am some troll who is only pretending to be a girl. Yes, I am aware of the fact that there are not a lot of girls playing this game, but that doesn’t mean that everyone who has a girl’s voice is a guy with voice-changing software!

 

I realize that there are also many people who are under the assumption that girls who play games use their gender as a means of gaining special privileges, but it is unfair to assume that this accounts for ALL girls. I for one have never done any such thing.

 

I have considered looking into using voice-changing software to sound like a male in order avoid situations of prejudice and gender bias, but I am not sure if this would be a viable option?

 

When someone meets a girl in Dayz, do they just immediately assume that it is a man? Do they hold some sort of grudge against girls who play games? What is it with all this prejudice against girls?

 

How do you feel when you meet a girl in Dayz?

Not quite a true statement that now is it, considering that almost every major city, town and large village in DK has a shooting range, that in a population of 5 mil or so that there are over 300k with hunting licences and that DK has relaxed certain gun laws expanding the acceptable calibers.

As for fierce socialists.....well not really either; fierce democrats more like as DK was the first country to have a democratically elected government system (since Harald bluetooth). I know a fair amount of Danes that vote Venstre or DFP.

Danes are great people though and the other statements, well who doesn't want healthcare, jobs and tons of bacon ! which will now have me dying for bacon until I get back to DK.

Compared to alot of other contries around the world, theres a very small percentage of people with guns here, and you wont ever find any assault rifles in a danish home, unless he is in the military and has a special permit.

Shoguns and hunting rifles is pretty much what we got :)

Ohh and when i say against weapons, i mean owning weapons for other things then hunting and owning very large caliber weapons, assault rifles or other weapons along those lines, but you couldnt have known that hehe.

Theres a huge difference between owning weapons for hunting, which you can only own after extensive training, and giving people acces to weapons of all types, at least in my opinion and most other danes.

 

But we are socialists, and parties like Venstre and DFP are socialists aswell. Especially DFP.

All our parties wants healthcare, take care of the sick and injured, the old and the young. It doesnt matter what you vote, nobody here wants to leave people on theyre own.

Venstre is more about capitalism then the other parties though.

Socialism is just a democratic version of communism tbh, so you arent completely off anyway hehe :)

What you have to remember is that there is a virus that turns people into mindless heartless killers (Zombies). What you might not realize is that it's not as simple as infected/not infected. In actuality, there are many degrees of infection where they may remain normal in appearance, retain enough intelligence to utilize tools but have lost their empathy and a portion of the intelligence. These partial zombies are often referred to as "Bandits" or "KOSer". Interestingly enough, when a full Zombies Groaning sounds are neurologically decoded, you can see that they are actually racists/sexist slurs that are well, overly slurred. So that must clearly be a symptom of the infection.

 

That said, should you find a genuinely uninfected person, you still have to get past their paranoia and compulsive hording symptoms of the PTSD they developed during the fall of civilization. So regardless of gender the only "Safe" encounters you can expect are ones where you can control the situation with force, and the only way to be 100% in control the situation, is for them not to be able to able to move or follow you... by killing them. Besides, they might have beans... you're kinda hungry right? Those %*s! They took your beans...must kill...

Personally I treat women the same as I treat men, after all we all have the ability to be utter cunts, but it is truly disappointing to see so many men show favouritism to the "fairer" sex just because, in real life, they have a different set of genitals and perhaps some attractive lumps in their shirt.

That said I come from the first generation of gamers where there were very few women online so perhaps I just don't fall for their "wily charms".

Dont forget in the newer generation many (not all, but a fair few) girl gamers have been more then happy to exploit that sympathy. to some extent i think many pretty much expect anyone in a video game with a female voice to screw them over based on that. (this is much more prevalent in persistent MMOs like everquest, WOW, EvE, etc but i can see the same sentiments being carried over to dayZ)

One of the servers I used to play on the mod had a girl gamer, pretty well known one, who would attract new players on the server to "help" her. She would give the "damsel in distress" malarkey over the global side chat and the regulars would give it the "I would help if I could but I'm not in the area". The fresh meat would then see a girl's name and make their way to help (typical neckbeard style) as soon as they got near she would use voice chat saying she was stuck in the church and needed bandages. As soon as the heroes suckers made their way in, she'd shoot them and steal their gear while laughing at their lame ass attempts to butter up a poor defenceless girl.

So, yeah, the "siren ploy" can work pretty damned well.

My wife plays the Dayz epoch mod religiously and she is known on some servers as the black widow because she is deadly and takes no prisoners. If you are nice, she will help you, and she has gone on quite a few missions with other players on numerous occasions. if you upset her, she will hunt every corner of the map to find you. Theres no prejudice against her for being a girl. Armed only with an axe she went charging at an armed player, swinging away like tiger woods on crack. Injured and unable to get a clear shot at her, he jumps in his car and runs her over and drives away, with only a broken leg she fixes it with morphine and notices that in his blind panic, he left his base open, so a woman scorned craving vengeance with warm blood still dripping from her hatchet, what's she gonna do? That's right run inside and destroy all his cars and his aircraft. Not leaving until everything is burning behind her. That poor guy is gonna return home and see that yet again the black widow left her mark.

My wife is awesome. So if you feel you are getting prejudice in game, shoot them in the bollocks, then you will have bigger balls than they do.

No, sexism in video-games is an issue. In regards to the games themselves and how many gamers treat other, female gamers. 

 

In DayZ, I've yet to team up with a female survivor without her being subject to threats of sexual violence. Yes. That bad. I'm not talking about the ''harmless'' rape jokes that are thrown around whenever someone gets handcuffed. I'm talking about people becoming quite nastier than they'd intended when they hear a feminine voice via VOIP.

 

I can imagine it really sucking when you know you're being harassed because of your gender. There's a difference between bandits acting for dramatic effect and the kind of stuff some girls put up with in this game. Just one person being a nasty son of a bitch to  another. It's not all in good fun, for them.

Sexism in the video game industry aside, the only example of this (and one would then assume the most representative) was someone saying "Sorry, this is DayZ, being a girl isn't going to help you". That's what she's going to hold up? At that point I'd tell anyone to get over themselves. The person who walked up to her and shot her in the face clearly didn't give a shit if she was a woman, yet this is supposedly an example of someone doing what? Treating her differently because she's a girl? Sorry, I don't follow that logic.

As far as your second sentence, what you're talking about happens in MMOs like WoW ALL-THE-GOD-DAMN-TIME. I've seen dudes fawn over girl gamers and literally pillage guild banks completely empty trying to make this girl that lives 1500 miles away from you happy. In an extreme example, some chick gamer literally sold her vagina and/or asshole for the gold to buy an epic mount during The Burning Crusade. Some other chick offered to blow a dude for another 5k gold. It doesn't happen to those degrees all the time obviously, but it happens in a lesser form or fashion on a fairly regular basis, and you don't have to spend years playing MMOs to see examples of it.
