DayZ Mod 1.8.1

Recommended Posts

Yup, I personally am already running the Steam version and have been directing as many people as possible to do the same (search for posts by BC_Hawke on reddit, I chime in whenever anyone asks why they can't connect to DayZ mod servers and direct them to your troubleshooting post).  I just wish there was some way to get dotjosh and server admins to update.  It's damn near impossible to squash the momentum that DZC has built up.  99% of the "how do I install DayZ mod?" posts on Reddit are still immediately met with "Get DZC and call it a day!".   :(  I'll drop it if you feel this doesn't contribute in any way.  I just wanted to keep the conversation going to brainstorm on a way to get people on the same page so they can move forward without the fear of losing their player base who doesn't know better.

Yes, because they're all over their OverPoop experience, which isn't available on Steam.

But I am personally not offering any help for that - as we have no affiliation. So all I can say is that the actual DayZ Mod is on Steam and one-klick-launch without any trouble.

I have no idea who is dealing with the hive just now. I've just got home and everyone is offline soon as i know know something
 so will you.

So does this mean we'll no longer expect any delays on mod updates?

All it means is we have some contacts.

Is the DayZ mod that we all know and love officially dead? I can't find a single populated server that isn't some gross deathmatch variation.

Try "DayZ Europa" server. Great admin support. Runs smooth. Population of 20-30 during peak hours. It's located in Europe, so expect ping of 150+ as you're from west coast USA.

Public Hive database server has gone offline again.  :(

Please read the posts just before yours, as it's every likely it has been answered already.

We have no control over the Hive. We are just as lost as everyone else.

For the moment yeah, but the reason for the public hive being down is unknown.

US 434 is back and alive as a private hive that stays true to Vanilla.

If and when the hive comes back online we'll keep the private hive and also start up the public server. Unfortunately we'll bring down US 435. In hindsight it was diluting the player base.

I apologize if I've missed something that's already been said in this thread, but who does have control over the hive?  I play DayZ mod a lot but I really don't know anything about how the hive database or servers are set up.

The public hive database only serves a very few of us these days.  It provides a way for players to go from one public hive server to another and retain the gear they have from one server to the next.  Private hive servers use their own database, therefore your gear will only be persistent on that one server.

Oh, sorry, I'm totally aware of the differences between public and private hives, what I'm trying to figure out is who's responsible for the public hive database or has the ability to bring it back up.

This is something so secret it will only be revealed to you when you die.  I have postulated that it is either controlled by the matrix or is really run by extra terrestrials.

I still do not get why the current group of public hive servers along side with the group of private hive vanilla servers just rent a server with 1Gbps upload and unlimited bandwidth running only MySQL and be connected to the same database. Will serve the exact same purpose as the public hive, no downtime, more control, better maintenance and the ability to include new vanilla servers. Heck, even the team might help you guys with it, do a fancy joining cooldown on it or something.

We've discussed this with some of the other public hive server admins. In the end this might be the way to go. As for the public hive database if I remember correctly it was hosted by HFB which was a reseller from another provider. HFB went tits up (I know this because my past dedicated box was hosted by them). I don't know what's happened now. They could have turned the lights out or simply a technical issue.

Hopefully it's just a technical issue. I rather preferred playing on public hives due to it's significant unaltered state of the server such as adding in more vehicles and weapons, keeping it as vanilla as vanilla ice cream gets. Mmm.. Ice cream.

with the current amount of vanilla players/servers the pros of public hive are pretty much non existant to me. the cons overweigh more than ever.

and there are good private vanilla hives with capable admins.

but a semi public hive with only legit servers could be a nice thing though...

But I am personally not offering any help for that - as we have no affiliation. So all I can say is that the actual DayZ Mod is on Steam and one-klick-launch without any trouble.

Our Overpoch server has moved to version 125548 and requires dayzlauncher or Steam UI or command line to run.  Server population has been stable.  However lots of new and old had or have issues with logging in.  I feel eventually people will get it and figure it out.  The initial problems during migration has been the poor feedback when they can't log in.  Examples include being stuck in debug, getting kicked after logging in, getting authentication error, etc.. For the most part most players do not have the capabilities of an IT level 1 support.  We've had to support a lot of players via TS, personal forums, etc...

When they come to us the first thing I tell them to do is the following:

  • Open Steam and right click Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead
  • Select Updates: Make sure 'Automatic Updates' is set to 'Always keep this game up to date' (you can always chose to not update after)
  • Go to 'Local Files' and browse install folder and right-click properties | details and confirm arama2OA.exe is version 125548
  • Go to 'Local Files' tab and select 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache'
  • After verifying start up Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead from Steam and navigate to the multi-player screen
  • Sometimes you will re-download DLC and Battleye, especially if you've been on an older version of Arma2OA (may not be true but a lot of players with a stale state of their game I've noticed this).
  • After going to the multi-player screen close Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead.
  • Then use DayzLauncher to run

I'm not saying all these steps are relevant but I basically walked-through about half the server population so they can log in.  It's never a bad idea to go back and retrace all steps.

With that being said the move has been relatively successful so with the public hives taking a dirt nap I'm seriously debating moving over US434 server as well to version 125548.

Anyways that's been our story so far.

The issue with that is that neither Overwatch nor Epoch has version-support and obviously a user-created mashup of two mods of a mod can't give any feedback whatsoever, as it was never supposed to happen.

This is the reason I don't offer support for it, it's tedious. DayZ Mod gives this feedback and is as easy as can be due to these very issue you're describing there. To play DayZ you can download it off Steam, as anything else is as confusing as you describe.

We no longer know is dealing with the hive. Matt was our point of contact for hive issues.

The question has been asked to drop the hive. Also who is now dealing with the hive

Waiting on info back.

Whether it's Overpoch or dayzmod or any other version of the mod it's not intuitive for the masses to migrate from DayzCommander to the steam versions, especially the steam version newer than 112555.  That's not unique to Overpoch/Epoch since it's evident on how few people play on the steam version greater than 112555 for 1.8.1.

It's a question of habit and unless there is a universal, intuitive and more importantly required for players to pull the instructions in migrating to Steam I can see the confusion continuing.  The only way I can see this happening is when game spy actually ceases to exist and people quickly realize dayzlauncher or directly from steam are the only approaches.

Kichilron I don't expect the dayzmod devs to support a Frankenstein version of a mod of a mod mash-up.  However what I did experience was how difficult it was for players to properly go to a version newer than 112555.  I wasn't implying any fault or expect you to support it.  It's entirely up to me since I placed the server online.  It was meant as my experience of what happens when players have to switch over when a supposed previous format just wont die.  I whole heatedly expect when US 434 switches over I'll get the same sort of queries.

By the way I see your frustration with the amount of support you've provided in another thread.  My post was mostly cathartic with a hint of rant and was not meant to aggravate an area you are obviously tired of dealing with.
