gannon46 788 Posted April 27, 2014 So I was looting a house the other day and I ran across a kitchen knife. Suddenly I thought of the new throwing mechanic and thought of a scenario in my head of getting held up, then quickly not COD/etc fast but rather quick throwing this kitchen knife into the chest of the assailant knocking him out of the scenario. So my question to the community is should they add throwing hatchets and throwing knives? And do you think not sure if its been mentioned items thrown can damage another player like a brick or big ass rock? i don't want to see shuriken or anything crazy though the ballistic knife would probably be floating around chenarus ideas thanks. Oyface 74 Posted April 27, 2014 (edited) Yes. I think they should. Edited April 27, 2014 by BillySpleen
Katana67 2907 Posted April 27, 2014 Do I want them? Sure. Could I live without them? Absolutely. Unfortunately, I'm not really seeing anything with the physics I've seen so far in DayZ to suggest that throwing stuff will be any less of a chore than in ARMA. Their statement of "tossing magazines to one another" seems to be fanciful thinking at best. The physics aren't accurate (yet), the throwing is still a chore, and the pickup detection is inconsistent.
Gekkonidae 270 Posted April 27, 2014 molotovs that set people on fire, improvised grenades, other explosive bullshit would be nice.
Survivor_Ted 269 Posted April 27, 2014 Don't think they need new items to accommodate the ones who want to throw their weapons, just throw the kitchen knife or the bayonet knife.
Deathlove 2286 Posted April 27, 2014 I think it SHOULD be in game. Dont forget throwing weapons can ALSO include explosive grenades as welll as smoke grenades to the arsenal.
liquidsnake 275 Posted April 27, 2014 Gameplay wise, I see nothing wrong with it. Some might whinge on about it being a CoD thing, but they need to realise it's an ancient combat-tested means of killing. But... not as effective as a bullet, nor as a crossbow bolt. Even though it isn't entirely out of place, it seems rather useless because of its sheer weakness. With the blood system we have now, get ready to throw 10 knives before seeing your victim fall to the ground.
Deathlove 2286 Posted April 27, 2014 No.Why? You have ppl hunkering down in a building the only option would be to throw a grenade in there unless you want to walk into a meat grinder trap. Think about it man. It would throw off ALLOT of campers.
hannibaldaplaya 1095 Posted April 27, 2014 Allow us to throw everything we find, give us animal masks, and I'll be a happy camper. I'll be raiding buildings on the coast with just a bag full of melee weapons to throw and slap people with.

Bororm 1156 Posted April 27, 2014 I think on a basic level it'd be nice. I think all items you throw at players should sorta interact with them, like how in the mod you could chuck cans at people and it wouldn't really damage them much but would still act as a hit and a headshot gave them a blurry status. I don't think it should be like you throw a knife and it's some high damaging thing, but I could see it doing a little damage and making the guy bleed. Throwing any sharp object should have a chance to make them bleed, and throwing blunt objects should do more shock damage. Basically I'd like to see it almost like an equivalent of a melee hit from the same item. I get the feeling they're going to go that route eventually. over9000nukez 199 Posted April 27, 2014 things an average person can throw, Molotov, grenade, i would NOT want to see any throwing knives and tomahawks, that takes a LOT of practice, if they wanted to add that i guess they would have to add the possibility of the blade not hitting, but the handle, and you'd have to become a boss knowing the ranges of it to use it properly. THIS.If they added them, I'd love to see things like Kitchen knives, M4 Bayonet and Combat knives being a 50/50 chance to stick. Maybe add a speciality knife that has a 75% chance.I'd love to see the rocks have a use other than crafting.. Be it for smacking people, or throwing at someone. Deathlove 2286 Posted April 27, 2014 It's a shame you can't throw stones.Yet you find a pristine stone lying on the floor to loot out of a MILLION rocks in the environment! XD
AlphaDogMeat . 493 Posted April 28, 2014 It's a shame you can't throw stones.Particularly from a proper sling. Getting hit by a plum-sized stone travelling in excess of 100mph is going to mess up anyone's day.
eskamick 20 Posted April 28, 2014 I'm not to sure about the effectiveness of throwing knives. I've tried that crap and I swear to god the safest person in the room would be the guy I was trying to hit. P.S.Don't stand behind me unless you want to lose a toe. Murlough 192 Posted April 28, 2014 (edited) I don't think we should add "throwing knives" just use regular knifes and machetes and stuff. But yes it would be pretty cool so long as it isnt instant killing or anything like that unless its a clear headshot. If it hits it should (depending on your attire) cause bleeding and stick in you until you manually remove it. As for grenades i always figured they would show up eventually.Edit: Also (this is just for my personal enjoyment) id LOVE to see tomahawks added. I tried those out once irl and i was WAYYY better with those than the silly knives. If i could get tomahaeks in game id roleplay the heck out of them. pillock 850 Posted April 28, 2014 Maybe if you could throw the .22 rounds, they might actually deal some damage?
-Gews- 7443 Posted April 28, 2014 No, I don't want them, throwing a throwing knife at a stationary target is hard enough, throwing an unbalanced kitchen knife or M9 bayonet is harder, throwing any with enough force and accuracy to stick and inflict a decent wound is even harder... People don't throw knives in combat, I can't see it being implemented in any kind of realistic way, otherwise players would start complaining "omg this sucks I can't even hit from 20 paces what a ripoff change plz" so I don't see the point and if it isn't realistic I don't want it. Throwing stuff sure, throwing weapons no. The only time people threw weapons was if the weapons were designed to throw and they had two or three other weapons ready to go. Throwing a knife would only be "effective" at only a few yards max and that's if you were a practiced knife thrower, and at that kind of distance you could sprint and stick your knife into them several times instead of (a chance of) only once.
MagneticToast 102 Posted April 28, 2014 Yes. You should be able to throw anything. Also, hopefully they fix it so you can throw items out of windows
ForceRecon (DayZ) 10 Posted April 28, 2014 It's a shame you can't throw stones.Exactly! I want to play this game Far Cry status and just chuck a rock to distract somebody and kill them when they go to investigate the noise. Or just chuck rocks at people for funzies. Irish. 4886 Posted April 28, 2014 Yes. You should be able to throw anything. Also, hopefully they fix it so you can throw items out of windowsWhile I want that.. 1 possible issue. Arse hats will throw loot out of windows. If it is close enough, loot may not respawn. But thats a maybe. What I want is for items to make appropriate noise when thrown.. tin can sounds. Environment makes noise.. like metal sheds, brick walls, dirt, water, etc.I want to throw rocks into a pond near someone and make them think something is in the water.. or toss a can of food to distract a zombie away. <-- (this worked in the mod to an extent), etc.. Whyherro123 2283 Posted April 28, 2014 Particularly from a proper sling. Getting hit by a plum-sized stone travelling in excess of 100mph is going to mess up anyone's day.My god, an actual sling is literally the most efficient weapon ever designed. Twirl a rock slowly about your head, then release. The rock will SCREAM to the target, followed by the crack of the sling, which is a sonic-fucking-boom. Centrifugal force is your friend. The only issue with a sling is the time it takes to become proficient (not skilled, proficient, as in "not kill yourself with the damn thing") I have had a sling for about 3 months, practiced with it almost every day, and I am glad to say that I can hit a torso-sized target at 50 paces..............2 out of 5 shots. Using the damn thing is HARD. You have to have a very thorough knowledge of tangents (when you release the cord, the rock flies tangentially from the point of release), speeds and velocities, as well as the effects of wind and aerodynamics of the specific projectile. I had some fun with beach rocks for a while, then made some lead shot by dripping melted tire weights into a bucket of water. Those motherfuckers FLY. Fast and far! It apparently has the perfect balance of weight, aerodynamic properties, and size. I can sling a lead shot about half a mile, with absolutely no sense of accuracy, but watching a shot zoom into the air and landing over 2000 feet away, travelling fast enough to make a baby sonic-boom is a sight to see, and almost as fun as shooting a rifle.Would I take a sling over a rifle? Absolutely fucking not. Would it be an amazing, efficient and effective backup, for both hunting and self-defense. Absolutely!
