Bicycle Suggestions/Discussion [Official]

Recommended Posts

This is something I thought about, too.  We should have bikes - not foldable ones only but normal city bikes and mountain bikes too.  Of course they'll be too bulky to be carried in your inventory so you should be using them as a vehicle.

I live in Rhode Island: I see a lot of these when the yacht dudes come into town. They carry them onboard because it's easy to stow away and a good way to get yourself around.

I like them.

It would have some down sides as-well though, you could not sprint with it on your back or carrying it, if it was on your back you could not have a backpack. There are ways around it maybe if you could add a small backpack to the bike its self then you would add some loot in there. I wouldn't mind it if it was done correctly

Ohh and it should be controlled by the hive, so X amount of them spawn on ALL servers, making it quite rare tbh.

It's understandable that bicycles truly are one of the best vehicles in the mod for being silent and concealable but a bicycle shouldn't be rare, unless you mean this one specifically.

Thats exactly what i mean, as we are discussing this one in this thread, and not bicycles in general mate ;)

No I am not here to say bicycles must be added and stuff, because many other people want them to be added as well!

But what as, as soon as the vehicles gets added into the game, you can find Bicycle wheels in the store, which take like 2x2 maybe stackable up to 2?

And you can find metal bars, which could stack up to 5 which take 3x1. And then if you have a wrench you can create an improvised bicycle.

Which will look very scrappy and makes a lot of noise of course?

Wouldn't that be awesome? And that the bicycles stay after server restart, or are carryable (Do not ask me how, but the developers might find a way to)

And if you find Oil cans you could upgrade it together with a saddle and stuff, so it makes less noise and starts looking better.

Also it would be   you could use spray paint cans on the bikes to camo them, instead of the rusty color it could be Green, black or camoed? (Like 50% or 75% for the whole bike?) And if you added this all it is a normal bike? Makes less noise and you are able to go faster on it?

Everything between ( and ) would be the inventory space

Crafting recipes would be:

Improvised Bike:

Move the wrench (1x1)  on the 5  metal bars (1x5) --> Option: Create frame --> Creates:  bicycle frame (2x4)

Move the wheels on the bicycle frame --> Option: Add wheels to frame --> Creates: Improvised bicycle (3x4)

IT IS RIDEABLE FROM HERE, But there might be a possibility to add a message: "My back hurts" because there is no saddle on it. And the message "My feet hurt" because there are no pedals and "My hands hurt" because of the metal bar as steering wheel. Having a pedal/steering wheel or saddle on it will keep these messages out.

How to expand the bike:

Move leather saddle (1x1) on the improvised bike --> Option: Add saddle to bike --> Adds the Saddle in the bicycle

Move steering wheel (1x2) on the improvised bike --> Option: Replace steer --> Replaces the metal bar steer for a normal steer

Move Pedals (1x1) on the improvised bike --> Option: Replace pedals --> Replaces the metal bars for pedals.

Move the oil can (2x1) on the improvised bike --> Option: Oil the bike --> The bike will be oiled, and will make less noise *

Move the black/green spray paint on the improvised bike --> Option: Paint bike --> The bike will get the colors **

Move a burlap wrap (with grass) on the bike --> Option: Add wrap to Steer / Top Tube / Down Tube / Seat Tube ***

* This will use a little bit of the oilcan (25% orso) , and the bike will be silent

** This should use 50% / 75% of the spraypaint can, because it is bigger then a gun

*** You should be able to add it to all 4 of the tubes, so it can be optimized in camouflage, because one wrap should not be enough.

Or another possibility:

Add in a Fold Bike, a Bike you can fold up to the size of (2x3)

You would only be able to spray paint this bike because it folds up.

Pro's and No's

Improvised bike Pro's

- You can customize the bike the way you want

- It will be faster as a Fold Bike because it has bigger wheels

Improvised bike No's

- You will need a Saddle, Steering wheel and Pedals to keep annoying messages out

- You will need to oil it to keep it silent.

- It takes a lot of inventory space

Fold bike Pro's

- It takes less inventory space as the Improvised bike

- It makes almost no sound without oiling.

Fold bike No's

- It is less customizable than the improvised bike

- It is slower than the improvised bike

What should be added into the game for these ideas:

- Metal bars (1x3)

- Bicycle wheels (2x2)

- Bicycle pedals (1x1)

- Bicycle Saddle (1x1)

- Bicycle Steering wheel (1x2)

- Oil can (2x1)

- Fold bike (2x3)

- Improvised Bicycle (3x4)

- Improvised Bicycle Frame (2x4)

Extra's

The improvised bike will lose durability based on time driven on it.

How more damaged how more noise it makes, Oiling it could help this! It will basically function as a Leather sewing kit or the sewing kit.

If you're tires gets damaged, repairing it with duct tape might help or of course putting new tires on it

Same will count for the fold bike, same for the noise and stuff

_______________________________________________________________________________

Tell me what you guys think of this idea, and if this would be added!

Also I would like to hear from the developers if this is able to, Basically the bike customization works as the weapon customisation ingame ;-)

Greetings to all of you

I actually like the idea of fabricating things from scratch, a pushbike would be a good starter project. Maybe if instead of a wrench you had to find a workshop....with a welder (and have a hacksaw) to fabricate the frame. There could be many workshops around the map, but like heli crashsites only say 5 welders would spawn in some of the say 20 workshops on the map. Maybe you cant attach the wheels right away. First you have to use a drill to prepare the frame, then they can go on.

They could let us fabricate lots of things at different sites with different materials :)

Hi guys, now that they are implementing vehicles and are talking about introducing penalties for running (since sprinting for 2 hours without getting a heart attack it stupid) do you think it would be a good idea to add in bicycles?.

Where to find them: In all towns and farmhouses. About 2 or so in a town the size of Kamysovo, maybe 8 in Berezino. All bikes are chained to railings or trees with bike locks. You need a hacksaw, pickaxe, fireaxe, woodcutter axe, hammer and chisel or boltcutters to unlock them.

Benefits of bicycle:

  • Once it gains momentum it can travel about 1.5 times the speed of sprinting now (I think sprint speed will be reduced anyway).
  • There are no physical penalties, you won't get tired or hurt your feet while riding.
  • They are very easy to find.
  • You don't need petrol or any tools to repair it.

Downsides of bicycle:

  • It can only travel at full speed on roads. It will travel a little slower on dirt roads and much slower on grass.
  • Since you can only travel on roads you will unable to keep a low profile and will probably be ambushed.
  • The bike provides no cover from guns.
  • Crashing the bike will cause you to fall off and possibly be injured.
  • You can't use a gun while on it.

Good idea, but I heard that bicycles are actually much more difficult to implement then your ordinary four wheel car.

Now I remember why this forum annoyed me so much. Stop.

The last bike related thread was in April. I think a new one is justified.

Really? Why?

You gotta watch out for the wannabe's man.. you gotta use a unique title or something to try and counteract. It is annoying, Very.. I don't think they see it from a different persons perspective. It's only further saddening when it makes peoples legit topic get locked, then everyone starts to think the Mods are overpowering, when in actual fact they are not. Akin to fans in a football game screaming at the referee, literally influencing his decision making.

OT - Bikes would be awesome, as would any other forms of transport.. now vehicles are getting some attention I would hope to hear more info on whats coming up and what to expect in the future with them.

1) Have you ridden a bike for long distances before? You can definitely get tired when using a bicycle.

2) Sure you do. A screwdriver, at least, but you still need to remove screws and the like.

Yeah you can get tired but not so much as running. I figured that in the game having much greater stamina with a bike would be a good plus. When thinking about the bike breaking down I figured the chain or wheel might be damaged. Those are simple things to fix (at least more simple than fixing an engine) so for simplicity just omit it.

Wrench.  I've yet to see a bike that used screws for anything other than say some sort of attachment like a basket.

Also this topic has been done to death, you could have simply bumped an old topic and added your 2 cents to that.

The reason why two wheels are harder to do than 4+ is because of balance and physics (literally).  Say you bike up a hill and go along the side, your top heavy, does the bike remain a perfect 90 degrees relative to the z axis, in which case you'll be stable but that'll cause problems, such as clipping into the terrain.  Do you remain perpendicular to the ground?  In that case you'll fall over and tumble because your top heavy.

I don't think you will ever be 90 degrees to anything in the game. If you are only able to travel on roads then you definitely won't face that problem. You could make the bikes relatively small like a cheap mountain bike and you won't get much of the top heavy problem. Of course having a bike look a little strange because it is sticking out at an odd angle wouldn't be a major bug in a game like Day Z.

Also I don't really understand why bicycle physics would be such a big deal in Day Z when they aren't so troublesome in games like GTA.

I do 100+ mile rides and am well versed in long distance and all weather cycling.

In all the science I've come across it is well understood that cycling is approx 1/5 the effort of running.

I like the whole idea with bikes being chained to lamp posts/railings, etc.

I agree with pretty much everything you've said here, but maybe certain bikes that spawn should have like a broken wheel or a missing bicycle chain?

Yeah, and then you would have to find a random wheel or chain lying about.

Maybe the broken down ones are also not locked up, so if you can't find something to break the lock you can just fix up a different bike.

Your lack of objectivity is not fair to those of us who have read this thread, the "need more zombies" threads, the countless "KoS made me a murderer" threads and the now the soon to be extinct "we need vehicles" threads, amongst many others.

I love bikes.

I want bikes.

I don't want 100 threads on bikes.

I want all of the ideas for bikes in one place where the DEVELOPMENT TEAM can easily read through them all.

Bike everywhere in real life, please.

The top heaviness of the bike does not come from the bike, it comes from the rider on the bike.  Also just because one game can do something doesn't mean all games can do the same thing.  Otherwise we'd already have a shit ton of fully functional cars, base building, barricading, parkour, ect.  GTA has had a while to get bikes to work in thier games, and look at GTA3 onward, motorcycles did not get in until Vice City and bikes didn't get in till San Andreas.

I have about 100 ideas concerning trains and how they could be added to Dayz, guess what, almost all of them have been made into a new topic at least twice (and thats not counting the horrible ideas like fully automated NPC trains that give you a warm meal, water, and a gun as well as a ride).

Nihil novi sub sole.
