[SA] Driving Style

In DayZ, Dean wants the player to have a lot of control over his/her character, and to help with this, I feel the vehicles in DayZ should be manual. It would be a drastic change from how we drive now. Instead of just holding W all the way to your destination, it would require you to utilize correct starting procedures, shifting, clutch, etc..

But yes, agreed, if it's manual IRL it should be manual in-game. Vehicles have a very arcade feel to them right now, especially in third person, that's not a good thing.

But most modern cars come with automatic transmissions. I guess the cars in Chernarus might be older, but I can't imagine every vehicle would have a manual transmission.

 

If you're referring to things like starting the car and putting it in drive, I suppose that's interesting, but it wouldn't add too much unless you were really working at it on an older car (which is entirely possible).

In the USA maybe. Many people prefer a manual because it is cheaper, you can fix it yourself and you have WAAAAAAY more control about the car. Of course you need a decent clutch and the feel for it. Sadly many people are dumb or lazy. Hence they buy automatics.

 

And after all this isn't even the west, in Chernaurus, they probably don't even know what an automatic ist.

I think it will be rated for adults. Anyways this game isnt supposed to be easy. Its supposed to be hard and learning should be the hard way.

That is also a thread started by me. I just saw this pop up in the thread and decided to put the spot light on it.

Most cars in the east don't have automatic transmissions due to cost and manageability. Some country's don't have automatics because they don't have the tech for it. And it would actually add a lot to driving in SA. It revolutionizes the aspect of driving period.

I know you live in the US but most cars outside of the US are "stick mdoels". An autotrans costs 1000-3000+€ in Europe depending on the car.

 

 

I like it, but i think it may be hard to get a handle on for some of the younger/newer players.

 

I guess they don't even have a drivers license anyway considering the average age of the new players. ;)

That's interesting. I had no idea that was the case.

 

I guess I just assumed it had been around long enough to find its way into most of the world's vehicles.

Shouldn't we be discussing more basic implementations than this beforehand? Being able to push a car, or handbrake securing it on a slope is more important then fumbling different keys for clutch and gears imo.

In the UK everyone drives manual transmission. I only know one person that drives an auto and that's cause she failed her manual test multiple times so switched over to auto, haha.

 

Autos are very American.

 

If manual transmission was implemented in DayZ IMO there should only be 'shift up', 'shift down' and 'reverse' keys though. The clutch seems a bit unnecessary as switching gears is second nature to most drivers. It would be like implementing seperate keys for your right and left legs while walking.

Side-note: In France, the only people I've met who own automatic cars are over 70 y-o, or with physical diabilities.

Recent high-end cars with optimized fuel consumption also tend to come with auto transmission but those are not very common.

But I'm perfectly happy with auto transmission cars in DayZ ^^

would love to see that addition to the game. everyone in this community wants everything as realistic as possible. kids would have massive problems to start and drive cars. Luv it!

Here in America, our drag cars reach a point where an auto-gearbox is needed due to:

 

#1: Lack of hearing the engine's RPM

 

and #2: Reaction time since the car can rev from 1000 rpm to 8000 rpm in the blink of an eye.

 

 

In addition, I don't see why most people assume that Americans all drive auto. Where I live, most cars are manual. Heck, I drive a manual and wouldn't have it any other way.

Well, then that kinda defeats the purpose doesn't it? Cars in DayZ shouldn't be the easiest thing in the world to operate. Using the Take-On: Helicopters engine, the helis in DayZ SA will be VERY complex and you might find yourself dumbfounded trying to start it. With that being said, I think car mechanics should be revised to be a bit more complex. We are aiming to make this game hard. Currently some average joe can just hop in a heli they found at balota and fly it no problem. I know this because it happened to me. Little kids start crying? Let them cry. The spoiled brats would wish they would respect and appreciate their parents more.

I would be fine with removing 3. person view  for vehicles completely, implementing Physics and use ToH flight model...

Beside that everybody is free to use TrackIR, joysticks, pedals and steering wheels   :) which I think is the only way to get as close as possible to the real thing

And making controls for the car wouldn't be difficult. I used to write engine E2's for Garry's Mod and I never had to map a vehicles control that was out-of-reach from any of your fingers. Most of them were VERY comfortable. 

For example:

 

W= Throttle (75%)

S= Brake

A&D= Turning

Shift= Throttle (100%)

X= Shift Up

C= Shift Down

Space= Clutch

Parking Brake= V

 

-OR- (for a more modular and comfortable set)

 

W= Throttle (75%)

S= Brake

A&D= Turning

Shift= Throttle (100%)

MScrollWheelUp= Shift up

MScrollWheelDwn= Shift Down

RMB= Clutch

Parking Brake= V

 

Or an atlernative to this:

 

W= Throttle (75%)

S= Brake

A&D= Turning

Shift= Throttle (100%)

LMB= Shift up

RMB= Shift Down

Alt= Clutch

Parking Brake= V

 

 

There are many ways you can config the keys to make driving really modular and comfortable.

There should be no third person in vehicles I mean it is just ridicilous. You can dodge things you wouldn't even see in real life. You can look behind you and see everything.

 

But that is another topic...

They say in the years where the automatic transmission got a lot more modern and efficient people tend to buy them more often for their new cars but that only counts for cars normaly people can't afford like f.e. a BMW or Audi which costs a fortune to buy. Just an example in the small car deparment ( The 2014 Fiesta ST costs 21k USD while in Europe it's 21K€ which is 28k USD  ). Cars for normal people are driven stick due to lack of money and a lot don't seem to feel comfortable with automatic transmissions ( it still has the stigma of beeing associated with US cars and their high fuel consumption ). Fuel prices didn't play a role in the US a long time so people didn't really car about gas mileage. What's the price for E10 or usual fuel over there atm?
