To not get shot. What will it take. Seriously

Recommended Posts

I'm not trolling here, this is a legit question.

So I spent the last few nights convincing people not to shoot me. Even when I told them I had NV goggles, M249SAW with ammo, blood, toolbox, map, compass... TO GIVE THEM! Nope, still shoot as soon as they finally see me. I did convince 2 guys once. Only once. I gave them everything I had as they were new to the game. Both had hand guns and rifles, so did I.

So what will it take? Seriously.

I play on the US servers and I go by "paul". I'm usually on the 40 player servers with a server time of 5:00pm. If you see me, be friendly and I'll have stuff for you. I don't ask for anything back (and no they are not hacked in items).

Shoot first, or avoid areas where there may be people.

But the only surefire way? This:

Removing weapons from the game is what it will take.

So you want to know how to befriend people even though you say yourself you befriended two people already....?

I think the problem is the sort of player you're approaching. People already in groups don't noramlly accept strangers and then there's the whole problem of never being sure if your direct chats are even getting through to the other players. Fresh spawns are your best bet but even then you have to keep your guard up. Don't let people out of your sight, don't let "new friends" point their guns in your direction and certainly don't pop out of a bush in front of strangers waving the friendly flag, more often than not you'll spook people into shooting you on sight.

Yeah, it is a bit sickening.Happens a lot. Paranoia begets paranoia. I have not had to commit a murder in a few weeks now. But I am forced to play at night, though. Maybe that is why i do not get much action. They need to implement some kind ofbonus, if you do not fire. I fucking well know that Rocket has said we have to balance the game ourselves. But i think it is a crappy excuse. If at least there were some kind of tools in place, then maybe. But it is just the guns talking.

If the stuff Rocket has said about his plans for more bandit "features" come to fruition, it'll help you to decide who to shoot before even talking to them. On top of the lame heartbeat he's said he has ideas (just ideas) for things like temporary blood on your hands after looting a freshly-killed player, and scars on your character's face etc.

I've run around and helped a few new spawns lately without getting murdered for it. My only real strategy is to find someone unarmed or with only an axe/crowbar and only help them until we find a weapon for them, then I GTFO. The only other ways I've teamed up with others successfully in the game so far is when I play with people I know outside the game, I suppose you can try to hook up with a clan perhaps?

Everyone's really suspicious of everyone else, youtube is chock full of videos of people trapping, bombing, griefing, and ganking without remorse after having been nice and friendly for the first few min/seconds. Helping others is still possible though, its just difficult, try the coast around cherno/electro for new unarmed spawns to help.

You may get some random new spawns to "befriend" you but more likely they will cause more grief for u attracting zombies and being dead the whole time without much game knowledge. players who are not new spawns and have some game experience already will more likely be more interested in a murder count from killing you and taking your gear than being your friend. also if you offer them all of the gear you mentioned before they will look at it in 2 ways either 1) he has all that gear? hes gonna kill me if i give him chance. 2) if hes willing to give me all that he must have awsome gear ill kill him and find out. both are lose for you :P so your greatest chance is shoot, kill=live :)

The only friends you will make in this game are the ones you have in real life. You may find someone in Electro and Cherno that won't shoot you, but if you get off the coast, you WILL be shot on sight.

As a lover of stealth games (Thief 2 ftw) I've had no problem slipping into DayZ. The whole "don't get shot" thing boils down to "see them but don't let them see you." Keep to cover. Stay in the trees and long grass. Keep your head down. Shoot zeds only when you have to. Keep to high ground. Case the joint before heading in. Have a goal, get in and get out asap.

You also have to take into consideration that there are not many reasons currently to trust strangers, what exactly are you hoping to achieve by offering other people your loot?

I'm really looking forward to the introduction of more features centered around group play but they're still a way off yet so trying to indulge in anything of the sort now is pretty pointless.

I think you get much more from helping each other - but PK will always happen because there's no consequence and its easy to do

The problem is simplicity, many players don't want, are afraid of or aren't capable of social interaction.

As long as its simpler to just kill another player and loot his items, there is no benefit in approaching someone you do not know and try to interact / trade with him.

Well hopefully people will think differently when the stand alone version comes out. However my efforts to give/trade/communicate/hangout will continue. Will I die a plenty, oh yes. The all out PvP is fine, but the shoot now ask questions later needs to change. One can easily communicate from a fair distance, even from outside buildings, what your intentions are... But if you're prosperously out to kill other players, then so be it. It's your game.

Yes, this is a funny problem....

To show that not everyone is a douchbag. All I need to survive is a few cans of food and water. I don't even need a gun to handle the Zeds.

I approached the fire station in Cherno a few nights ago as a fresh spawn, there was a green chem light glowing up stairs. So, I decided to get on the direct channel and see if I could get a response. "Hello, I'm friendly and unarmed" I said. The other players response?

"Hey there sexy, can I rub my balls on your leg."

Not getting shot is pretty easy.

There is a technique you need to learn, though, it is called stealth.

Instead of running around trying to talk to people who don't want to talk to you, who only want to kill you, stay in the tree line, stay behind hard cover, only move when the coast is clear.

It is hardcore PvP survival, not 3D facebook.

That's pretty much it.

I would add that people have this all wrong. The folks that don't want to get killed...also seem to not want to protect themselves. No offense OP, but seriously, if you have to time to give your stuff away, you have to time to kill to protect your stuff. I don't understand why you'd rather buy your life than protect your life. If you have a gun...shoot. If you don't run. But my god man...do not try to buy what you are not willing to defend.

I can count on one hand the number of survivors I have killed. I have avoided plenty. I have been killed a few times. Once to a sniper so far away I have no idea where he was. Once to a guy that was sniping and I got behind, but wasn't able to finish the job I started. Twice to guys I litterally ran into in the woods who saw me first. And once by some smuck who'd rather shoot other newborns and bring the horde dwon on himself.

That's it. In just at a month of playing...that's it. Those are all my player deaths. I have done pretty good. I have killed 3 guys. All at Stary incidentally...but you kill or be killed.

You need to learn to pull the trigger OP. Stop begging to save what you aren't willing to fight for.

Out.

I don;t shoot on sight and have had several friendly encounters.

Apart from my missionary work, http://dayzmod.com/forum/index.php?/topic/22485-im-kinda-like-jesus-but-not-in-a-sacriligious-way/ I've also ran into a few guys who didn't want to fight and we teamed up. I once came across a Belgian guy I helped get a gun, and we raided Balota and the military tents nearby.

Then I also came across two seperate guys in the middle of Electro, and we parted as friends, so it's not impossible.

Not that I agree with the KoS mentality of most of DayZ's playerbase, I must point out something pretty obvious in the OP

If you tell people you have all these rare items to give them, they can easily just shoot you and loot them the same as you giving the items to them. If you have to essentially bribe people into not shooting you, chances are they're not actually "friendly" to begin with. Most friendly players are just happy to have someone NOT trying to gun them down, loot is the last thing on their minds

They don't want your loot. They want your life.

DayZ's not a zombie survival simulator, it's a murder simulator. Minus the whole "disguise yourself, avoid witnesses, stalk your target" part. More like a "shoot random people you see on the street and disappear magically" simulator.
