0.64 Freerider 261 Posted June 29, 2019 (edited) Hello everyone, it is appearently possible to have proper moonlight working. I can tell you from my own experience that this is very close to what full moon looks like irl. Perhaps it would have to be toned down, but just very slightly. I'm still waiting on information from the uploader, as I haven't found any other information regarding this. What do you guys think? ThePugman 280 Posted June 29, 2019 It looks very good. I wouldn’t want every night to be like that though. Does the moon actually go through a proper cycle of full, half, quarter, etc. Be cool if the light could reflect the changing moon, so we get pitch black night when the moon is covered. I fear that it would be too much of a big job, though.

As far as I'm aware the moon does go through a proper cycle and even if it's full moon but with overcast it should be pitch black imo! But for those times when the moon as a decent amount of fullness, it should be reflected with the light.
MetalHead2112 43 Posted June 30, 2019 This is what the game is missing. Is this a mod in the making ?

This video is all I have seen and found of this moonlight. No mod in the workshop. No reply from the channel yet. Maybe someone on here knows more.
0.64 Freerider 261 Posted September 6, 2019 I'm not sure if anything has changed, I certainly haven't seen anything in the patch notes but we have some very nice moonlight in the game currently. It's not quite as strong as the one that you can see in the video I linked too in the OP, but it's very nice. What do you guys say. Has it always been there and I was just blind? Or did they change something?
ThePugman 280 Posted September 8, 2019 @0.64 Freerider Nope, they definitely changed something. Could be the brighter nights making it more noticeable? I was actually able to see my shadow on a full moon. Very impressed with it, right now.
Mookie (original) 799 Posted September 12, 2019 I hate to be that guy (again), but we had working moonlight pre-.63, and (as far as I could tell) it was lunar-cycle (and weather) dependent, etc. It was certainly bright enough to get around, with none of that personal nightlight stuff that still seems so depressing. 2
Derleth 1357 Posted October 2, 2019 (edited) That video is from pre-beta 0.63, nights looked like that before the anti-gamma system was implemented along with beta. It interacted nicely with phases and cloud cover too. With 1.05 they recently tweaked night lighting so the moonlight is a little bit stronger (it casts visible shadows again!) than in previous 1.X builds, unfortunately the current cloud system does not work well with the lighting. The sky looks very unnatural at night (see screenshots below) and has done so ever since around the time personal night light was implemented. The anti-gamma thing was and is a great idea, I just wish they could come up with a way to make it work without making nights look worse. They looked so much better in 0.63... Unnatural looking clouds: Spoiler The moon is back! Spoiler @ImpulZ : Would it be possible to add a server-side toggle (such as for the personal night light) for server owners to switch the anti-gamma system off and/or possibly customise the ambient brightness at night? I would very much prefer to get rid of anti-gamma and have the pre-beta nights on my server. Edited October 2, 2019 by Derleth

Exactly. The unnaturally dark nights since 1.0 were a consequence of the anti-gamma system, and although the recent changes to lighting was an improvement, nights still look nowhere near as good as they did in Alpha. Which is a depressing irony... Hence my question to @ImpulZ in my previous post. I would like to shut the anti-gamma system off and have proper nights on my server. To hell with gamma cheaters, I'll smash them with my ban hammer if need be. 1
Private Evans 1303 Posted October 2, 2019 In this case one question about server side options is it possible to disable this horrible basebuilding mechanics ?? If ever I would be fine with tents, fireplaces and hidden caches and of course some sort of barricading... cheers

Cruel perhaps, but it would get the message across!

I must say, after reading this post and hoping for it to be a feature in the next update, I can confirm this: I was playing this morning before the 1.05 patch came out for us lowly console-ists, and I was looking at my compass during the night and noticed some movement of shadow. Sure enough, behind me was the full moon, visible through the trees. It was the tree casting a shadow on my compass. I could not see a shadow of my character on the ground because the background used in reference was extremely dark compared to the white surface of the gold compass when flipped open. Ergo, the moonlight was always there, we just couldn't see it. Haven't gone through night in 1.05 yet, so I am optimistic to see what the difference will be. 0.64 Freerider 261 Posted July 3, 2020 (edited) A little update on this important subject. It is currently possible for server owners to set a value of 0-1 for the parameter lightingConfig=X with 0 being a brighter night, as is default for all official 3rd person servers and 1 for the darker nights as is default for all official 1st person servers. The only issue is, that the dark version only makes sense in a very VERY strong overcast situation. Then the darkness would be realistic. But even when the sky is clear, vegetation is not illuminated whatsoever, as can be seen in the screenshots below. What we need is not a bright night for casuals and a super edgy dark night for the hardcore players. We simply need realistic lighting, with it being almost pitch black on full overcast, and very nicely visible on full moon and clear sky, as is in the current bright night setting. @ImpulZ Can you please tell us wether this very important part of DayZ is currently being considered? The Arma series of games has a good implementation of the calendar for the lunar phase, light and shadow, and does not use any mods for this. The question is different. Why did DayZ 1.0 get a moonlight parody ?. This ticket has a video from Armagh - how does moonlight work. https://feedback.bistudio.com/T143219 The moon in DayZ 1.0 received a low reflected light intensity. The intensity of moonlight for some reason is lower than the intensity of the glow of the night horizon from sunlight. Strange, the glow of these objects has the same light source - the sun. It is also strange that the north does not use the lunar calendar or weather to set the degree of illumination in the night sky. Perhaps the parameter for night light 0 or 1 is simpler, but we lose a wide color gamut in the night sky, which depend on the phase of the moon and cloud cover.
