Modding Support?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I just was thinking about modding and realised that with the old RV engine on the way out, what type of modding support will there be?

Seeing as how DayZ is a standalone game with its own independent engine, I would think that mod support for it would be rather specific, unlike the old DayZ Mod / Arma series.

Will it still incorporate pbo files? How will it be interacting with EnScript, or will that be sealed off? Just wondering, more or less, what platform will there be for modding once we get to that stage?

If this has already been discussed in detail, please shoot me a link and close this thread if needed. Thank you. :D

It will probably be much like ARMA series. Right now the stuff is still packed in .pbo and in same old ARMA formats. If it was allowed you could make some addons right now with the same modding tools for ARMA. It's not a new engine made from scratch, it's a evolution of RV. As for EnScript, why would it be "sealed off"?

I really wonder what will happen with mods. Dean was really looking forward to the possibility of modding the Stand Alone, but was also against the idea of having a stamina indicator of any kind. Now that he's gone, there's a high chance of seeing a higher detailed HUD than in the mod, and with a stamina/sprint bar, so who knows if we'll ever be able to mod the game.

We'll see how it turns out, but if we ever get a modding tool and the ability to modify the game, it won't happen before beta or even, the "final" version.

I still hope we get some, has it would grant us ever more possibilities for replay-ability than with the vanilla stand alone.

Technically that HUD was just a concept, so we're still not even for sure if their will be a stamina bar :p But I get your point

Actually modding has been confirmed many times by not just dean hall, but more recently brian hicks I believe, so it's 100% on board . Also eugen mentioned steam workshop integration could appear before 1.0 release so maybe we could see a mod appear in beta ?

Sealed off is a bad way to put it, I suppose.

Restricted, maybe? I don't know, I had a few pints when I wrote the thread, don't judge me.

Ah, I see what you did there you cheeky booger.

Correct, however, it seems like most of the talk stemmed around the Workshop section for DayZ on Steam. Not much else has been said which made me wonder about the whole method of delivery for modding.

Thank you all for your input!

It looks like it is a reality at this point. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/224386-dayz-sa-hud-concept/#entry2255924

That's still just the idea. Read at the bottom, they're still not sure if the HUD will be in game (And if it is it's toggle-able). However they confirmed everything will be done through sounds and animations at the least.

I'm not sure how I feel about this, to be honest. I've always immensely appreciated the zero HUD in DayZ....

Same, I'm all for immersion, but hey, as long as we can toggle it on and off, I'll be happy.

I'm about 90% sure that this is a console feature, but will be included in tha PC game as an option.  Could you imagine a casual console gamer starting to play DayZ with no idea what's going on?  They'd be taking the game back to the stores in droves, insisting that it was broken, or an incomplete copy.

I'm no programmer, but in most industries, you don't just go building things without having an intended use for them beforehand.  And you definitely don't showcase a feature if it is just headed for the scrap heap.

I've been looking for modding topics and the main thread is locked. Why? Because it is still ages away from modding?

I like the idea of an America Map and would like to start concepting and collecting ideas for a small prototype. However, I have never used Bohemias Editor before and would have to invest a lot of time into figuring everything out. I do have some decent experience with Unity and Unreal Engine, though.

Ideally, I'd want to provide content and designs for environments only. I'm not US-American either (I'm German), so I'd need insight and feedback from third party (I'm talking to you Murica!). Hell, why am I making this so complicated? This is what concerns me:

Will Dayz modding really be using mostly the same editors as Arma 2, or will we have to expect something different? It would really be helpful to get answers to some of the questions about the editors currently used for development. Where would I get started to inform me on such things. Maybe the Dayz devs can make a special insight vid or hire a documentary crew to do so. I always dig these videos, where they show people at work, but I'd like it more informative than for promotion. I'm sure the modding community will appreciate it, and modding will - in the end - make Dayz become a long-lived, multi-faceted beautiful beast ;)
