herbivorethegoat 6 Posted April 23, 2015 'Ello.I've been playing DayZ for a while and I've noticed a very serious problem. Some servers have persistence disabled, which means you start with a fresh character on them. The problem I've found is that, if I have a well progressed character (That has a gun, large backpack, ect), it is deleted upon joining a non-persistence server and I start with a fresh one. This means I have unwillingly lost a lot of characters to this. Some servers even say that they have persistence on, but upon joining, I start with a fresh character and it is too late to get my old one back. I'm sure this problem has been talked about before, but I find it to be a very serious one and I can only safely play on one server because of it.I would recommend an "Are you sure?" prompt upon joining a server with persistence disabled.
gannon46 788 Posted April 23, 2015 never experienced that bug before i have had characters reset but that's on those shady servers with the join kick reset player stuff. you sure your not switching shards from public to private because the private hive you will have a new character everytime if your not sure join a public server and see if you have and old toon. i'm just curious as if its something else that would most certainly suck. Conrad_The_Comrade 577 Posted April 23, 2015 I've never had an issue with switching between Non-Persistence and Persistence Enabled servers. You might be switching from Private and Public servers. Private have their own character databases or whatever.

hekatoncheyr 7 Posted April 23, 2015 That might be it, actually. I honestly didn't think private and public meant anything :Pit is. Private servers have their own data, thus the new character and are the only servers since .55 that can have the persistance turned off. Go back to a public server and you will have all your old gear.

As others have stated, this isn't anything to do with persistence. It's down to the type of server you have selected. Your public character will remain on all public hives, one for 3pp and one for 1pp. Each private server has its own player database, so you will have a new character for each one you join (unless the private hive has more than one server connected to it). It is important to understand that these characters exist independent of each other, so a new spawn on a private shard will not effect your public character, nor any characters you have on any other private server. Private hives are over-all more fun to play on than public as lack server hoppers, and therefore it's much more of an even playing field.

Be aware that re-joining a server immediately after restart will sometimes wipe your toon. Best advice is to wait a few minutes. It's a known bug. Welcome to the hard lessons of alpha.
