therandomredstone 432 Posted April 12, 2015 (edited) Bows right now are glitch, unfinished, and weak. They need to change a few things to make bows a good alternative for guns. 1) Fix the aiming and firing - Right now aiming and firing a bow is VERY inaccurate and just doesn't feel right. This needs to be fixed. 2) Deadlier - Bows need to be almost entirely silent from up close and COMPLELEY silent when firing from a distance. The only thing you should hear is the arrow wizzing through the night air and hitting your friend in the eyeball. 3) Stronger - Kinda ties in with "Deadlier" but they should conflict more damage. One hit to the chest would make you bleed like crazy, two would knock you out until someone bandages you, otherwise you bleed out. Right now the devs aren't entirely focused on bows but whenever they want players to have different play styles to be able to choose from, this should be on the list. Syphonz 64 Posted April 12, 2015 Agreed with this. 1 step further, poison arrows? Plenty of medical supplies available to combat this, could just get someone sick. I could see the bow becoming a VERY useful weapon to most players, even more so than guns.
Whyherro123 2283 Posted April 12, 2015 In reality, the "type" of bow we make in-game (as in, a bent stick) would actually be rather shitty. Low power, low range, low accuracy. "Real" bows, that is, bows that would actually be useful for hunting, with reliable accuracy, range, and power, require a lot more work. Take a look at some of my threads to see some ideas. http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/205753-archery-bows-arrows-etc/http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/215247-quiver-arrows/
-Gews- 7443 Posted April 12, 2015 1) improvised bows should be inaccurate. However it's true it doesn't feel right. 2) bows are not silent, if you want a quieter bow you need these. The bow doesn't seem loud to me to start with and it has such a short effective range you would hear it from any distance but that noise the arrows make is annoying. 3) have you used it? It's already more than powerful enough.
Whyherro123 2283 Posted April 12, 2015 3) have you used it? It's already more than powerful enough.Exactly. For something that is little more than a bent thin greenwood stick, it apparently propels light arrows out to 100m with enough force to kill a large game animal (like the Berezino cows) with one shot, without even an arrow head! Remember, children, arrows kill through blood loss. The wider and sharper the "head" (which is why hunting heads are called "broadheads"), the wider the cut will be and the more the target will bleed. A sharpened wooden arrowshaft will not be all that dangerous, while bone, stone, glass and metal is exponentially more so. (comparison of different broadheads here) Even still, it still would take time for the target to bleed out, even with a glass/bone/metal broadhead. Which is why in real life you aim for the lungs/heart, to cause exsangination the fastest.
SaveMeJebus 164 Posted April 12, 2015 With the new animation system allowing you to actually draw the bow and still move around it should make the crafted bow a little less painful to use at least.

Personally I believe you should be able to make an initial improvised bow and then later gradually upgrade it to become more refined and useful to you by making it more composite (using man-made materials to strength and enhance it). But then again I also believe you should be able to find both a modern composite recurve bow and even a Compound Bow. Both of which incorporate a special sight for aiming. The Arrows in-game are directly tied with damage, it's hard to say EXACTLY how much damage they all do. I would say it be structured like this: Improvised Arrow - By far the weakest but the most common (in that it can be crafted), it's weak, it's light and your ammunition supply with these are practically infinite (if your willing to spend time making them all).Bone Arrow - After successfully getting your first animal or gutting your first corpse these Arrows I would imagine would be as close to the damage profile of regular Composite Arrows. They would do more damage due to the broadhead design they have.Composite Arrow - The ones you find in Towns as regular loot would make this the most powerful also the most rare. Structurally they also would have the best in terms of accuracy and range, being balanced for flight compared to improvised arrows and bone arrows which would have defects. In addition I do think we need more ways to create arrows, such as taking random junk such as scrap metals (such as those of soda cans/tin cans), glass and even sharpened stone flints as arrow heads. I was thinking of adding a comment like this in my suggestion. Like you could make an improvised arrow, and be able to switch out the arrowheads, the main body "stick" and other various pieces. I still think the improvised arrow should pack a punch. Like it would stick in you and hurt like hell making you bleed. While the bone and composite arrow do more damage. shadowranger333 24 Posted April 12, 2015 Would be nice to see a composite bow. And for the bow to sit on your shoulders in a less derpy way.

Whyherro123 2283 Posted April 21, 2015 (edited) In my opinion, the "Improvised Ashwood Short Bow" should be removed from the game: It requires an axe (to cut down the tree), and either a rope or animal guts (which you are unlikely to get unless you can kill an animal, which almost requires you to already have a firearm) In its place, I propose that we instead gain the ability to craft a "bundle bow", that is, a bunch of sticks tied together. It would be very weak, only really capable of taking small game, with a reduced range. However, it would be easily craft-able with some sticks, say 10 (either cut from bushes, or foraged from the forest floor), and rags (from clothing) This would both increase the "availability" of a "low-tier" (you aren't really going to be hunting any large game/people with a bundle bow) ranged weapon, while serving as a nod to realism/authenticity. As of the latest patch, I've found you can cut branches off Ashwood Tree's with a suitable knife, it should give an option for "Cut Ashwood Stick from Tree" or something like that. Personally I think we should have multiple crafted bows, this one and the ashwood bow. I do like your idea though!

Draco122 412 Posted April 21, 2015 also as i have suggested before we should be able to create quivers from animal skin or a burlap sack + rope so we can store and shoot arrow from it not just making piles of 5 .. Two ways I could imagine you could make an improvised quiver is to use wire instead of Rope and using tanned leather (the wire is the binder and not the strap). I say this because there are already a number of crafting recipes which primarily use Rope yet wire (to my knowledge) has one use to make Rabbit snares. You could add rope to a completed quiver which allows you to carry it seperate from a backpack.

8bit_Survivor 93 Posted May 5, 2015 i would love a bow before we get another cs smg.I agree, for a survival game they are adding a lot of high maintenance automatic weapons. Lots of great ideas here, especially interested in that Bundle Bow. More improvised weapons & crafting please. The new inventory matrix is most likely the first step towards this. Deathlove 2286 Posted May 5, 2015 I just want bows to become a main weapon but its really hard to stick with them at the moment considering they offer no advantage currently. Im hopping the silenced improvements that come with the silencer sets also gets included with the bows. Its just a matter of WHEN it gets released is the big question.
BeefBacon 1185 Posted May 5, 2015 I think bows would become a lot more useful if they could be carried alongside a rifle and a melee weapon, or if they replaced the melee slot. On the one occasion I actually crafted a bow before I found a weapon, I found a shotgun 5 minutes later, and I had shells. I used the bow to kill maybe two zombies. It was great because it's effectively a silenced weapon which is ideal for picking off zombies, but I'm not going to use it if it means sacrificing a more effective weapon. Either that or, as you say, introduce better bows or allow the current bow to be upgraded in some way; in addition to improving the current bow mechanics as using them is quite the hassle. ebrim 998 Posted May 5, 2015 (edited) Just to clarify - making a bow right now is actually very easy and it's plenty effective against animals. You don't need an axe to take down a tree, you just need a knife or the similar to "cut a branch" from an ashwood. Rope is actually pretty common but it's not impossible to take down an animal without a ranged weapon for intestines. Not long ago I chased a cow into a town until it got stuck on a wall and then killed it with a mining pick. Once you get bones you can make great bone arrows. I really can't wait for 0.56 and bows working again. :( Sure, you'll probably eventually trade it for a firearm but maybe then you run out of bullets and its time to make a bow again.
