First Person Publics

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I wanted to get an idea of whether people are actually interested in first person public servers. From the in-game server browser it doesn't look like there is, as there aren't many 1pp servers that aren't private shards. Myself and a small group of ~5 others recently acquired an East-NA server and are trying to decide to make the switch to 3pp to attract more players. Our group prefer 1pp but it's not all that fun only playing with ourselves B). We'd like to keep it 1pp but want more players to join. I was thinking about posting the details in the Server section but thought to post the question first.

Is the player volume greater in 3pp because of lack of 1pp server?

Do 1pp players just prefer private shards?

I personally like 1pp more than 3pp, the only problem is that no one is playing on 1pp servers, and I don't enjoy playing on servers alone.

See this is our problem too. Maybe we should just post the details in the server section and see how it affects the player count.

See i am a 1pp player but yeah i find myself heading to 1pp private shards because well there is more players on them than public versions. I hope you have luck getting numbers because its almost sad the amount of 1pp players who play 3pp due to wanting a full server. (If they would just start filling a 1pp one, more people would join and then it might get full lol )

That is our thoughts too. We have ~7 in total so we are hoping for people to see that number and join.

Do you guys have clan tags in your names?? i find those can scare people away , when they join and half the people on server have a clan tag. The private shard i play on the devs are in a clan and they actually make announcements of where there clan is to 1) for those wanting to avoid a well armed group can stay away 2) those interested in trying to tangle with a clan have a general idea where they are ,they make sighting near so and so town announcements)

Clan names, sure but a clan of 3, lol. Yeah I get what your are saying. They don't know how big the clan is. I'll see if they'll change them.

We were thinking of being active in pursuing player interactions. For example, make a global announcement that a care package can found in town X. Or like you idea of saying a fight can be found in town Y. There is a lot that can be done. There are some in our group that like RP but in a lighter sense. Thanks for the discussion.

I think 1st person players usually prefer private shards because the majority of them enjoy a more immersive and authentic gameplay. Now currentl you have:

  1. Peeking on 3rd person servers warping gameplay in an unauthentic way that centers around looking around corners or over edges while staying unseen. It also makes camping and sniping more attractive and moving/flanking more of a risk as you simply cannot spot some people at all.
  2. Server hopping on public servers warping gameplay in an unauthentic way where the average player has way more and higher tier loot than he should have while also starving ingame paths and less attractive areas from players concentrating acitivities to certain areas (military bases/coast).

So if you want better gameplay you most likely choose your servers this way which means people who care less end up on the most prevalent server type (public 3rd person) while people who care a lot end up on 1st person private shards.

First person publics have the great advantage that you can keep your character and make it easier to play with friends. You also might meet more different players and are less at the mercy of the resident (often server owning) clans and the server conditions in general. However, this is even more so the case with public 3rd person servers.

So in the end we have:

  • 3rd person public: Mainstream with the most servers, huge world, many actors but the most gameplay issues.
  • 3rd person private: Eliminates server hopping and allows for house rules. I never played on these.
  • 1st person public. Most immersive with the least gameplay issues at the cost of a fairly small world.
  • 1st person public: More immersive but less servers mean a smaller world in general (you play public for the big world) while still having gameplay/immersion issues because of server hopping (you play 1st person for the gameplay/immersion).

I think that in case the issues above are fixed (no more peeking and no more sever hopping*) the public 3rd person servers will be the best option because less players would basically flee from certain issues.

*Frequent hopping for loot or other ingame advantages. Being able to switch to another server from time to time is a good thing.

Pray for the developers to come to their senses and remove 3pp from the game. That is the only way 1pp servers will increase in numbers.

The most successful 1PP servers seem to be the ones with their players making posts on Reddit and elsewhere which builds promo and a sense of community. If you want to gain or maintain population on 1PP it seems you have to work for it.

I'd happily play on a 1pp public if it could maintain any population. I don't expect a full server but ideally there would be more than 5 people at almost all times. That said I've become rather addicted to the accelerated time servers the devs started up a couple weeks ago and sadly they're only 3pp. I love the day/night cycle and for now that's a bigger preference for me than 1pp. Ideally, I'd have both.

I only play on 1PP public servers now. But I am in the vast minority.

Sadly, if you want higher pops, then you'll have to make it 3PP or Private.

Unfortunately, so begins the trend of server renters who may prefer a certain type of gameplay changing the settings to facilitate a different type of gameplay just to draw players.

I know this seems innocuous, but this is exactly what happened to the Mod. I hope the Devs have a plan to manage this when modding and greater admin control are released. Otherwise, when these things roll-out, if you want to play on a server with any kind of a population then it'll be one of these: start with a "load out" and donators will start with M4s, 1000 vehicles, all the lootz, 24hr daylight, etc. Because server renters will do whatever they can to attract players. I understand [why] they do it; I mean what's the point in renting if no one is on the server?

[Edit: typo]

That is what I was thinking and why I started the discussion here first. /r/dayz can be a bite of a tough nut. Thanks for the input.

I think the time range on ours server is pretty good. It restart about 45 minutes after sunset, so you do get some night play but not too much. We'd be willing to adjust for sure. If you're willing to play on it, you would make ~8  . I'll post the details in the server section eventually.

For the accelerated time servers I would like to see them add a restart offset. Meaning on that on day 1 the server starts at 8am game time and then on restart the time is 9am or whatever you define the offset to. This way you'll never start playing at the same time. Because if you can only play at 6pm IRL then the server time should be random each time you log in at 6pm IRL. Thanks for your input.

I'll absolutely check it out. My challenge is that I'm in the West and usually only begin to play around 9MST, so server pops in the West are already on the decline much less the servers in the East.

Yep, having the server restart changing the dynamic of the time definitely seems like a good feature.

Promote your server, here and elswhere.

I only play 1st pp always on the same server (public), it is often quite in the daytime but gets pretty busy in the evenings and weekends.

The USA may have less call 1st pp but I believe the demand is there.

That was what I was trying to gauge. I see lots of talk about it but when you see the in-game browser it's a different picture. Thanks, we'll try to get the name out there.

I'd guess private hives have a lot to do with the decline of 1pp public servers. I used to play 1pp sometimes just to mess around on a different character, but with private hives there's no need.

I logged into a first person public server yesterday. It'd been so long since I played that I still had a bad on my head. Not sure how I survived all the wipes.
