To no one's surprise, well placed shots are very effective against the zeds. But, we don't always have a suppressor handy and we don't always want to draw attention to ourselves. Therefore, let's talk melee for a moment.

 

Part 1 - Weapons

A few folks have reported that the ax is no longer king of the jungle. Others have reported that the cattle prod is surprisingly effective. Personally, I've had good luck with the sledge, I wonder if anyone has any other anecdotes about how they were surprised that a specific weapon was more, or less effective than they expected. Also, I wonder about battery life and fresh battery supply for the cattle prod. In previous builds, the battery life was rather poor, so I didn't consider the cattle prod viable (for me at least). Have there been some buffs applied to this weapon?

 

Part 2 - Strategy

I have found that standing at the top of a stairway and allowing the zed to come to me was a very effective strategy. The zed doesn't seem to be able to unleash it's full furry and I have a nice, stationary target. One, or two shots to the noggin and it was all over with very little drama.

 

Out in the open, most of my encounters have devolved into a brawl. The old strategies just don't provide the desired results any longer. If you are going to stand toe to toe, you have to get your licks in quickly, or pay the price. This "strategy" is definitely not recommended for multiple zeds at the same time.

 

Obviously you can run away and sometimes that is necessary, but if you want that MP5 that's in the police car and three zeds are circling the car, how do you approach the problem, without resorting to firearms, or the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch? Does anyone feel like they have developed a winning strategy yet?

 

As far as batteries go I am running around with four spare batteries I have found in my travels.  Five if you count the one I have in my range finder.  All are fully charged and I can usually get three-four zed kills per battery with a pristine stun baton.  If the baton is damaged that can go down to one kill.  If using a baton or prod get into the habit of checking the battery after every kill. 

 

I have been finding that shooting the bastards is the best way to go.  Remember when they used to spawn back in rather quickly and knew exactly where you were if you shot them?  They don't do that any more.  I have silenced all my weapons, not out of fear of the zeds they don't work on but because of players hearing my gunshots.  Still have my cattle prod but that is a toe to toe weapon.  You can't do the running attack anymore with it so, like I said, really I am just shooting them now.  It saves my gear a lot of wear and tear.

 

Glad to hear the Sledge is still working, I think the splitting axe might still be good too, just, once in awhile, the fire axe turns to shit.  This is one of those times.  I still carry it to chop fire wood though. 

 

I was on Sing 2 for most of the day running around in 1pp.  I have been having really good luck finding trucks, you'll understand if I don't say where, I already gave away my secret pistol location.  I hate driving in 1pp though since there really is no peripheral vision.  At least the hoppers can't move trucks from server to server, although I am sure there are many, many malcontent hopnazis out there who are pissed that they can't..   Probably the same dumb asses who think it's a good idea you can't pack a water proof bag into a ruck and then put things into the water proof bag to keep those things from getting WET.

I play plenty of FPP and never have I felt an issue with my spacial orientation/awareness.  Either way, any fixed point on the screen would serve and and off center interaction circle would still serve your purpose.

 

Maybe it's just the way I'm sitting in relation to the monitor and the way my TrackIR is setup, but I'm having issues with that when, say, trying to dodge trees while looking around to maintain a constant 360 and jogging through dense woods.. or navigating around objects in tight rooms / looking for loot - I bump into things now and then.  :blush:

Strangely, it's not as bad in A3. YMMV.

Oculus might improve on that in the future.  B)

P.S. As far as an offset circle goes - I believe a 'crosshair' should point in the direction of travel. This has to do with UI usability, having it otherwise would be (slightly) confusing. But having the ability to 'detach' a cursor from the crosshair to manipulate objects (like some RPGs we won't name here do ;)) could be a godsend though.

again you have no proof..

 

if u saw the gear i had you probably would flip out. 

 

It is easy to get gear if you know what you are doing

Maybe it has to do with the vast number of obvious dupers and other cheaters in the game using high end gear to roleplay CoD in Elektro.

There's also a vast number of players who get their gear legit. For the longest time I rarely visited military bases as I played on my own, and as a result, never had any sort of assault rifle + mag. I used to think everyone who was ultra geared must have been a hopper at least. Recently I started playing with a buddy and we frequent military bases. Only now do I realize how easy it can be to get geared. Hopefully the new central economy will have an effect. 

 

Anyway, I solely play 1PP and like the circle. Works well for orientation and interaction with the environment and I find the opacity is low enough for it not to be overly noticeable. Like Veyda said, an opacity setting would be a good way to make everyone happy. And if anything, the new weapon crosshair makes it more difficult to accurately hipfire.

No, those pics are from one of three "summer camp" type places that were added around the map. I'm not sure if anyone has checked Tisy recently though. My character's near there so maybe I'll give it a look.

Shame, I was really hyped they would finally put that in. Also, there is a huge hole in the ground north of it that I think they have yet to fill with water to make a lake. Very pretty place. I want to see if I can scavenge up enough ammo, some farming tools, and supplies to make it up to the plains north of there to do some target practice.

The sign says Летний Лагерь Арсеньево (Arsen'yevo Summer Camp) - I think this is supposed to be a scout camp for kids (пионерлагерь) of sorts.

Navigating in DayZ is a lot easier if you can read the cyrillic signs.  ;)

Hm, so did anyone else experience a char reset? I first played right after I downloaded the update and had my previous character but after going back in I had a fresh guy. I don't mind, just curious! It's unlikely anyone killed me as I was logging off but you never know.

Yes, it seemed to be on about 2 hour resets to me. And my character did get reset on the first one, but then I got him back on the second one. Of course the first one had a cz75 mag and the second one had a cz75

I think that military zombies are silent now when they attack.

 

The zombie combat model can have them turn invisible behind walls when they are chasing you. 

 

I stepped off a stairs. hurt my shoes,  cold barely move and the zombies first hit wrecked my shoes, put me on the ground and the beating started....

Ak 74 had to be deployed.

 

I found an AK74 and its mag in the same room....

 

trying to remove the mag so I could reload it turned into a stuttery dupping extravaganza. Nothing was actually duped but I had one on the floor, one on the gun and one in my pocket at one point before it worked itself out. I was sure I had lost my lucky mag.

 

Tons of 7.62 X 54R rounds about, no 7.62 * 51 or 308 that I saw. 45 ammo also rare.

Silencers not very silent even on the .380.

 

Not overwhelming numbers of Zs but they seemed to be within ear shot of each other, so it was possible to get in trouble.  Seemed easier (and necessary) to see their direction of observation and travel and exploit that.  They do not seem able to see very far, but they come very very fast when they see you.

 

crow bars are better then the knives at opening cans.

 

Got my boots wet and was never able to dry them. ended up going around in shoes for quite a while. Had a long battle with wet and cold with the one char who spawned near that garage in the ne of the map

I am blown away by the interactions that I've had today. One in particular stands out. I was wandering through SW Novi Sobor when I spotted a zed about 20m away. No sooner did I spot her, then she looked right at me. I was already crouching, so I froze. She began to slowly walk towards me. As she approached, I slowly backed away, trying to maintain the gap. She stopped to have a closer look and I froze once again. She started walking towards me again and I managed to slip behind a wrecked UAZ. Although crouching, I could see her over the hood of UAZ. Now about 10m away, she stopped again and stared at the UAZ. As she approached the UAZ, I managed to slowly back away and move around to the back side of a barn, careful to move only when she moved and stop when she stopped. I entered the barn, climbed the stairs and prepared to be rushed. Strangely, she never entered the barn. After a few minutes it became obvious that she was not coming into the barn to eat me, so I walked outside. There was no sign of her.

Not only could she not see me crouched, only 20m away, but she could not see me behind the UAZ, nor through the walls of the barn! Although very suspicious, she apparently walked right past and kept going!

These infected people don't have floating camera angels to help them find their next meal? That's not very fair considering 90% of the player base will see them coming from over a wall across the street.

All jokes aside, I wonder how the growing difficulty of the environment (zombies) will change the community's perspective on 3pp being a part of dayz. I'd imagine having 3pp enabled will make stealth a laughably achievable feat for even the most novice of players. Toggle walk, enable floating camera, hold alt, hold w, and spin head in circles. Omniscient ninja mode activated.

There is nothing there at that location on this map, I have looked.  That base is NOT in game yet, these pictures are from some kind of resort/spa style area where people can rent cabins.  There are, apparently, four of these places now.  The resort/spa area near Tisi is actually North of the village, just to the east of Grozovoy Pass and over looking the valley from the top of a large cliff.   They do have several new small camp/cabin style buildings, along with a tractor pub, some civilian barracks I guess are for the camp staff and some maintenance sheds but none of them are spawning loot ATM.  That isn't me just saying that to keep you away, they really aren't but feel free to go look.

 

I would hope that each camp will have very slim chance of spawning a special Jason style Boss Zed once each reset eventually. One that has some kind of chance to drop some type of rare, super loot, like a dragon skin armor vest or something crazy like that.

I had success fighting zombies in melee with brass knuckles. One hit kill to the head, although side stepping doesn't work any more. Need to be careful around these ones. Also, bow shots 1 hit them in the head and are silent. Who needs a gun.

Some have complained that there are not different difficulty levels ... A.K.A. an easy mode. Little do they suspect, they will have it now!

here's a few things i noticed today.  you can still craft a courier bag with a burlap sack and some string, but it's no longer possible to upgrade it to an improvised backpack using sticks.. (you only have to add sticks right?) i tried this with 2 different courier bags  edit: nvm it works, i just did it wrong

 

i can confirm what someone else posted here, the ice pick can't be used as a weapon anymore..

 

i had problems with the telescopic baton as well.. it would not open. minutes later when i had 2 zombies on me i tried again but i couldn't get it to open. while i was punching the zombies with my fists the baton opened while it was on my back. not sure what that was all about

 

and the loot spawning system still isn't very good.. just after the update there was lots of loot, today i survived solely on berries and apples. took half an hour just to find a melee weapon (that telescopic baton) after 1.5 hours i was still wearing the jeans i spawned in and a dress. i wasn't even bothered that i couldn't upgrade the courier bag because i found almost nothing i wanted to take with me anyways. like yesterday i didn't see a single zed in the smaller towns either

I learned cyrilics in grade school some 25 years ago, and I have to translate to my American and British friends. Only thing Im good for in this game  :)

I crafted an improvised backpack yesterday. You need to empty the courier and put it on ground. Then add the sticks :) one question. How come I've met 5 different people inland on exp?? On stable I NEVER meet a single person inland. Why?

oh, thanks! 

 

i think most people go inland because the coast is completely stripped of weapons and other usefull things within hours of the update.. everybody's trying to find a spot that's not looted dry yet

Carrying a landmine I noticed that my shadow doesn't get rendered. Only the mine shadow been visible.

I didn't mess around with any setting.

Some things currently disabled because of performance issues?

As it should be, no food or weapons on coast. But devs most put something to atract players bac to coast. Id sugest vehicle parts, building materials or something like that. Items you need later in game, after you survive initial time after spawning.

There are, apparently, four of these places now. 

 

I would hope that each camp will have very slim chance of spawning a special Jason style Boss Zed once each reset eventually. One that has some kind of chance to drop some type of rare, super loot, like a dragon skin armor vest or something crazy like that.

Six, actually! Severogad, Novy Sobor, Topolka Dam, Tisy (Grozovoy Pass), Devil's Castle, and Green Mountain. I haven't been to the latter 2 yet but I will tonight for sure :)

 

 

I love your "boss zed" idea, Barnabus. Not just a Jason-style zed for those areas, but other unique zeds in other areas as well.

Haa hell yes,  they should put a hockey mask in the game and a tough zombie could be wearing it at the camp as homage to those films
