Is showing a players name through check pulse intentional? Especially when they are still conscious.

Recommended Posts

Cross post from reddit, but I thought it should be here since more dev's are lurking around these parts.

So, im not exactly sure if this just slipped by as an oversight or if it is intentional that you can somehow learn a players name through ancient magic by checking their heartrate. While this isnt some huge gamebreaking ordeal it is rather 'gamey' feeling. If a player wants to lie about their in game name and conceal their identity in direct chat when meeting someone new, they cant.

Recently /u/Ayzerr posted a video  on the subreddit where we attempted to blend into a larger group. However, he was ever so slightly too far away to see how they were able to verify I was not part of the group.

Mid sprint, one of the members check pulsed me and immediately called me by my name in direct chat. You can watch what im talking about here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMzEHf4dUDo?t=1m50s (yay self promotion)

It felt slightly ridiculous that they didn't have to do any sort of check internally, and immediately knew who I was. So my question is, is check pulse (especially while someone is conscious) intentional? I personally don't think you should be able to gain so much information just by scroll wheeling on somebody. It leaves out a lot of times where you could attempt to impersonate someone else, when meeting someone in direct chat.

Id belive it is a clutch. Hencheforth someone whould recognize you not belonging  to their group IRL rather fast i whould assume. Given the nature of a game, a bit gamey isent all that bad. Any alternative ideas ?

Thats true for groups but when you meet someone in direct chat you lose the option to lie about who you are becasue of the check pulse feature, which is a bit strange for a post apocalyptic sandbox. Deception should definitly be one of the best parts of the game. And an alternative idea - there is none. Uou can throw your ID on the ground, and then introduce yourself under whatever name you wish.

Personally I enjoy this feature when I kill a player I like to be able to know who he was.. Lot of regulars on my server and if I reveal a clan tag u know u got trouble incoming.

I agree it is gamey but in the clan situation u know they are relaying info on u through TS even after death....

I feel this one gamey feature gives me a slight help when dealing with clans but if you really wanna address things that really break the game play I'd start with

1. People using chat programs outside direct to be silent hunters in packs

2. Gamma exploits ruining night time game play for those who enjoy it

See, I'm cool with it showing their name if they're dead, and that's really about it. I just want them to add in the wallets and hopefully they have an ID in it. I know they already have the wallet model, so I dont know why we are waiting.

Edit: I just realized I sound like an idiot, it's obviously more than just the model they gotta worry about xD But yeah, you get what Im saying, so shush

No problem with it. If any stranger tries to get within scroll wheel distance of me I light them up. It's survivor courtesy to not get in someone's bubble, and 100% justified in lethal response.

The devs have already stated that there's nothing that they really can do within reason, nor do they intend to.

I mean, what would they do? Block alternate programs, force you to use your in-game mic, or what? None of those are great solutions.

Yes - and no. I think Peter and I are on the same page with this not making sense in a 1.0 sense. However, being in development - more often than not, this data being available has helped us a great deal.

I know nothing can be done by devs and I leave this to private shards/ honor system on those shards to implement rules which punish those who do.

I lie about my name all the time , just don't let them get close ... In real life there's no possible way you could integrate into a group unbeknownst to the group simply because we all have identifiable faces .. In the game unfortunately we do not have unique faces, so as long as it helps the devs gather info on hackers or what not id say keep it in the game for now .. But yes I agree I would eventually love to see this removed , also I would really love for the SCROLL WHEEL Options in general to be removed , I know it doesn't have much to do with this topic but I had to squeeze that in there , I hate the scroll wheel options menu !!! :0 !

I like the id of being able to check a players ID (living or dead).  Couple of suggestions:

1) It should be "check ID" rather than "check pulse".

2) You shouldn't be able to check the ID of a living player whose face is concealed by a helmet or balaclava or whatever.  Actually make a non-cosmetic purpose to having masks.

There should be some way to do it, at least when people are dead.  I don't mind it as it is now, but if a more complex system were introduced like some suggestions above it would be cool.

This has been discussed before (not saying UTMFSE) but:

practicality: confirms you're finishing off / healing the correct player prior to committing to the act

realism: everyone looks pretty identical for the most part in DayZ, being distinguishable only on kit + basic character qualities (mostly hidden by kit anyway).  If leaning in to help someone as close as you are to check their pulse, you'd see their face and would be able to identify them as a unique individual.

Initially I was fully in agreement with OP, but on reflection I think there are a few nuances to this.

everyone looks pretty identical for the most part in DayZ

This is just as much a problem as the pulse checking.  Why was OP able to infiltrate that group in the first place?  Why didn't they immediately recognise that there was a stranger in their midst?

I'm a big proponent of realism, but it is realistic to instantly know the difference between friends and strangers.  The nature of computer graphics makes it difficult, so maybe some mechanism is needed to help us out. In fact, I think you could argue that such a mechanism increases "authenticity" (as Rocket would say) even if it decreases realism.

I would actually be OK with a nametag appearing at very close range, but perhaps the pulse checking is even better, because immersion will never be disrupted unless you specifically take that action.

my dream is that in gold, we'll have a lot more zombies shambling and moving about (particularly in urbanised areas).  In this scenario (and many others) telling friend from foe isn't as easy as a shoulder check.

People have enough trouble with distinguishing friend from foe when wearing uniforms, let alone civilian/informal gear...

That! That makes perfect sense, creates an advantage of wearing masks and is just really authentic as well!

As the check pulse/ID takes the place of a real life 'check if I recognize this person once I'm close enough to properly see the person's face' that suggestion makes perfect sense and should be relatively easy to implement as well.

I'm all in for it.

But you brought up a great suggestion... Wallet with ID badge showing Zombie kills, player kills, last player killed, over all time played etc...

Makes for a great write up when you kill XXX top player.

Great suggestion.

and maybe a link for the dev's to report hackers. while in game.
