How do you set up your hotbar, and why?

Recommended Posts

By now I've probably watched more DayZ videos than hours I work in a standard week.  I've noticed that there are many different ways players set up their hotbar.  Main weapon in the first slot seems to be the average but I haven't noticed much continuity after that.  So how do you set yours up and what are the advantages to your method?

Here's mine:

1st slot: Melee weapon

2nd slot: Secondary weapon (This can be a pistol, mp5k, sawn off, or aks-74u)

3rd slot: Primary weapon

4th slot: Canteen/water bottle

5th slot: Morphine/splint

6th slot: Handcuffs

7th slot: Knife/machete/crafted stone

The first 3 slots make sense to me in that order.  Press 1 for zombies, 2 for indoors, and 3 when I'm entering a city or in the street.  I keep the canteen and water bottle at 4 in case I need to refill at a well or lake.  The 5th slot should be obvious to everyone.  Never store either of them in your pants.  The handcuffs one... I just like handcuffing people.  7th slot is for skinning animals.  So how about you guys?

First three are the same for me, then it goes Bandage, compass, map.

I don't really use it for anything else.

EDIT:

I wish we could have a whistle, like a gymteachers whistle, that would be #7.

I used to just put stuff in the first 3 slots

1. Melee

2. Sidearm

3. Primary Weapon

But I have stopped using the hotbar altogether as it is too unreliable for me

In order...

1) Long gun

2) Sidearm

3) Melee Weapon

4) Second Sidearm (if I have one)

5) Bandages

6) Binoculars

It's notable that all these numbres are reachable with my right thumb with the mouse buttons along the side of the G600.

Hotbars aren't realistic, therefore I refuse to use them. They ruin my immersion.

4. Pistol/Sawn off

5. Rags

6. Bandages

7. Compass

8. Bino/Rangefinder

9. Lockpick

10. Grenade/wildcard

Though since they only work half the time, I usually just tab and drag. And come to think of it, I rarely pick up a compass as they always seem to be bugged.

Considering they only work 30% of the time at best, I never put anything there.

People have found a way when it works 100% of the time. Open up your inventory and press the number and it switches everytime. You can make it pretty quickly that way.

Interesting, that would be quicker than dragging it, will try tonight. Useful info earns beans sir.

  1. Meelee
  2. Gun
  3. Compass
  4. Bandage
  5. Splint

If I've got more I start rearranging at 3. I HATE that sodas and stuff just show up on there. If all I've got is an ax there's nothing more annoying than hitting 1 and accidentally hitting 2 and you start drinking a soda... that's just, awesome when that happens. So intimidating, phear my Pipsi!

Pretty much the same but 4 and 5 are bandages/rags and canteen, 9 is compass and 0 is a completed map. In 8 I usually have binoculars once I find a pair.

So you don't do anything in real life to give yourself an edge? Really? I think of the hot bar as knowing exactly where something is and having easy access to it. Makes it more immersive for me that way. Edited by Barnabus

Sorry, but any type of UI is essentially cheating. I feel bad for people who use the hotbar. So unrealistic, no matter how you slice it.

How do you justify using any keys at all or even the mouse then?  Do you use a steering wheel to drive the truck?  Cheating..  LOL. too funny, now I think you're just trolling..
