Don't buy it, or buy it and let it sit in your Steam account if you want the discounted price.  I have a feeling your expecting a finished game, DayZ is anything but.

drop the flashlight and battery, take your shirt off with inv window open - right click on it and turn it into rags, this is how you stop bleeding when zombies bash the crap out of you, other than that, get clothes, look for an axe (best zombie mele weapon and can open canned food), and eat / drink till you are energized / hydrated.  do not trust anyone... never let them behind you.  And use this http://www.dayzdb.com/map to figure out where you are and where you want to go.

And people wonder why they're freezing in the first 10 mins of respawn.  Take off your shirt only if you need to/are bleeding.  It helps provide a minuscule amount of protection as well compared to no shirt (but hey, it's better than nothing).  I keep my flashlights but I make sure I put the battery in them first thing.

Watch some youtube videos they can be very helpful.

As for servers. I try to find 3 or 4 servers I really like, favorite those and then stick to them. I only go looking for new servers if the ones I normally play on are having issues or do not have the population I am looking for.

I disagree with you. The shirt can prevent you from bleeding in the first place. And the rags will still be craftable even if the shirt takes some damage. I believe that while you have good intentions that you could have possibly offered something more to the op then belitteling someone who has valid advice.

My advice to the op Is to watch a twitch stream for a little bit to see how the game kind of works. Its complex and what you need to know will depend greatly on your gaming experience.

Thanks everyone  for your reply I know the game is unfinished and I know the basics for getting started in the game,I guess I should have asked about using servers, something about don't use a server without the red battle eye? or don't use certain servers or you could lose your character and gear. How do you know if a server is safe to go to? Is the red battle eye a sign that it is safe? Thanks again for the help.

Set the filter option for battleye required = yes

even tho its 1st/3rd be aware of a few things:

- the name of the server / persistance

     - if its  generic named server, DayZ CA 1-122 or similar you must rejoin a similar server or you prob get wiped

     - if its like a clan name, =BOM= clan server .... you must rejoin something similar or you prob get wiped

- the time of the server

    - 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 and such are bad, server in process of restarting and might not have connection to battleye/hive = you prob get wiped

    - time should be something like 8:33, or a 9:21, or a 10:43, or a 12:11, click refresh a few times - check to see the timer increment in 1 min intervals = prob ok to join

    - try to join server with the good times as stated above AND that have at least 1 person in them...

    - if you join a server and see WAITING FOR HOST... and no red battleye text in lower left corner = HIT ESCAPE IMMEDIATLY AND GET THE F OUT, means the server is not  connected to battleye/hive yet and has no player info = you prob get wiped.

- after exiting a server be carefull to not rejoin another asap... give it a 60s+ delay always - if you log out in a combat situation your dude can stay on the server you just left for like 60s or more i think = bad, again a battleye/hive thing, so make sure to give it at least a couple mins before joining another server.

- if you log out, and know you were safe / all ok, and you log in and you are a freshie... do not move... immediatly log out and attempt to log in on a different server like i stated above and you should still have that dude, you prob logged into a server that appeared to have the same paramaters as previous but didnt.

you can have 2 guys going at same time, a 1st person only view dude, and a 1st/3rd person dude ....

i got screwed out of many a fully jacked dudes by not following these rules.... since then lost zero....

Rags take seconds to make, you might as well keep the warmth until you need a bandage.

I've never ever died from not being able to make a bandage the instant I start bleeding.

Make sure you really look at how the server UI is laid out.  You can sort servers by ping, player count, name, version, etc.  You can also adjust ping limits which may help you if you're playing by satellite.  If you want to risk lots of player interaction, go to a high pop server.  Otherwise, learn to play on a low pop server. There are official servers and privately funded servers.  Look at the names and you should be able to figure it out.

Bottom line, take a bit to figure out the server UI and all your questions should be answered.

Actually this guy is not really in need of a game tutorial, more like a tutorial on multiplaying.

If you're new to multiplay there's a lot of things for you to learn. my steam id is http://steamcommunity.com/id/Yazar8

If you have any questions, ask me I'll be pleased to answer them.

Beware, satellite Internet has an awful latency compared to terrestrial Internet, acctualy it can be 20x higher than wired Internet. Make sure you get this info from your provider before you start playing or you may found yourself ragequit because you die without even having a chance to return fire. Right now I have around 50 ms, satellite average is 600ms, this means you will receive game data each half second. You will be an easy prey. Would be nice if Bohemia had a few servers reserved to satellite players only.

Actually my intention was not to teamup. I can't, I play solo. But I can help you by answering your questions quicker than you would want.

To add someone you must login to steam first on that page. You'll see a login link at the top right of the page. Then reload my profile and you'll see an add as friend button.

YAZAR 8 no offence taken I was only asking to figure out how to navigate through the steam system  since i'm new to it.Its a lot of work babysitting a new player and I have no problem going out on my own to learn to play. One more question I would like to ask is how do you know what the rules are for each server, such as someone mentioned that private servers are better to play on they make their own rules, where are the rules located? Thanks

Just get on and play. There's no rules that matter at the moment.

dayz was the first multiplayer game I played properly and I hadn't a clue at the start. 700 hours later, I'm still crap:D

Some of the best moments of DayZ are when you first start with the game and have absolutely no clue what is going on.

Thats pretty much what I have been doing is just playing, but the more forums I read it seems the good people are far and few between or just hidden cause they dont want to get shot.I hope their will some balance to the game cause its hard enough just to get started then you run into someone give them a hand and they shoot you for a thank you.I did run into a very large group of people who seemed to have a team leader he was wearing a red beret. They were all camoed out.We talked for a minute then they left.IT was awsome wished I could have gone with them.
