Jumping Server Cheating and Spawning Characters

Recommended Posts

I thing characters should be locked in on a server its on. Its cool to go to a low populated server gear up and jump into a high populated one and just go nuts. But don't that take a way from the game play. You should work your way up in the would your in and a naval idea trade with people instead of kill them to get things you need. Ya I know robbing killing people is going to happen, its dayz.  But limiting the speed you get stuff mite slow down the PVP stuff a little. People get all they need and what is left KILL,KILL,KILL.

I have head they are going to start letting you board up houses and make fortifications. Great and all but all a person needs to do is log out go to a server were know one has done any thing with the home or land go inside and long back in to the place you wont to get in to. You circumvent every thing. If you don't lock characters on servers you are wasting your time. Ya like night vision equipment. Who needs that when you can tern up the gamma. If there is a flaw people will exploit

People will always find a way around a hard task, so deal with it.

This also takes a bit of time, its not like on low pop servers you can search for berries and find a mosin.

OP, you're right. Server hopping is way way way too easy and there's no penalty for doing it. I think it definitely has a negative impact on the experience.

I know in the Stable servers that's what a vast amount of players do. It seems like every character I see in the Stable branch servers is on their way to a Blackwater Enterprises job interview, fully geared with their favorite weapons and sidearms.

BUT...

When I play in the Experimental Branch where server hopping is much much more difficult...I don't see that. I see players who have much less geared up characters. They have jackets and jeans and Blazes and Sporters...you can instantly tell that once you take server hopping out of the equation players wear and use what they find and go to greater lengths to find it. They spread out because they know they can't just hop servers and then stay in a military base or at the coast hassling new spawns.

The kinds of characters that you see in the Experimental branch seems much more organic. To me, as much as I've played...the difference is obvious.

One character per server.

Would fix so many of the problems in the game.

Private shards will be added. Play on those servers. Stop trying to force your ideas on everyone else. Alpha.

No, but really. Private shards will definitely change gameplay in a positive way. I'm pretty excited to see them added.

And it would create much more. There are better solutions to deal with overpowered mechanics than removing them. Private shards with 24/7 daytime would not solve the server hopping and gamma exploiting but rather reduce their impact to zero. On the other side they also reduce player options and the overall game dynamics by a lot.

So an actual fix is appreciated and for both things there are good ideas floating around.

Name a single problem introduced with one character per server that isn't people simple not being able to change servers at will that is not a problem.

Not being able to change servers at will is a huge problem - its basically the other extreme to server hopping and just as bad. The flexibility from being able to switch servers is a good thing.

  1. Interaction with a fewer number of people/characters.
  2. More crude rarity limits on loot (e.g. a single server does not allow for 1in10 servers items).
  3. A smaller economy in general.
  4. A smaller game world in a sense of barricades etc.
  5. Server capacity limits may cause people to get excluded from gameplay* because servers are full.
  6. Technical difficulties may cause people to get excluded from gameplay*.
  7. Empty servers will fill up much slower as many people would have to start all over again.
  8. More possible characters might cause players to care less about a single one.

Thats what comes to mind right now - maybe there are more things but as I said the loss of flexibility is enough. The all those things are no problem for some people thats okay - they can play on privates hives. But for others thats not an option and a fix is still needed.

In fact something like a 5 hour server switch time would probably have similar advantages as private hives without many of the disadvantages mentioned above. And thats probably much more cost than actually needed.

One possible solution is you could tag certain rare / military items as "despawn items" that disappear within a certain proximity if someone server hops in when no one else is around.  The server can already tell when a person is server hopping, it just would require an additional check of which items are in the proximity, and whether or not any other players are also in the proximity.

Or you could just attach a reasonable cost to hopping. Less effort and less impact on loot economy and other players. Was discussed here in some depth.

Very much this...it seems that server hopping is here to stay, at least that BI decides to do something drastic...like going for a MMO type of game in which they host their own servers and they have total control of what is going on..but i agree, private hives will be the solution to a lot of problems.

Private shards already do this and will be released within the next two months or so if not sooner.

What about server groups!

You would get one character per group and each group would have no more than 5 servers in it. When you think that rocket said he wants 150 player servers, that's 750 players per group. So nearly all the people you meet will be new but there is also a strong chance that you will meet people you've met before. Making trade and working together much more likely.

That eliminates or partially deals with 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. I'm not sure what you mean by 2, could you rephrase it?

on a seperate note, because server groups would help this too. night day cycles should be shorter, no longer than 8/8 and no shorter than 2/2 (the night day cycles are like that in some takistan life servers and it works very well). Different server groups could have different day/night cycles but every server in a group would have the same time!
