Opened doors are not random!

Recommended Posts

I have noticed that recently introduced "randomly" opened doors do have an actual pattern. For example I know when the Zelenogorsk military base has not been looted if barracks doors are closed and the main building is opened.

You'll notice that the doors inside the barracks inside are varied. Sometimes all of them are shut, sometimes some of them are open, sometimes even all shut. And I hate to burst your bubble, but I have been to Zelenogorsk military base and found one barracks door open and flashbangs and high capacity vests inside. Which I'm certain would not have been left behind.

They are very much random in my experience.

There is a pattern as the OP said, it just varies by location:

Jail building in e.g. Turovo always has the front doors open, jail door closed and room doors open on server restart, where the jail building in e.g. Green Mountain always has front doors closed, jail door closed and room doors open on restart.

So there is a pattern, it is just not building specific. My guesses are, either the statuses were randomised once when the map was compiled before the update or the randomising algorithm they created for the doors always comes up with the same result upon restart.

This and barracks also. Actually it seems less random than before 0.49 which I by the way enjoy immensely.

Who cares about door patterns? Just go inside and see if it was looted by yourself. If you find something, great! If you don't, well, shit. Someone beat you there!

I should have clarified, I meant the outside door, not the inside ones.

Because most players power-game DayZ to the last letter. They look for clothes/weapon/food stats, memorise distances for sniping, server-hop, etc. Learning door patterns to see if a building was looted is just one position on the list to be even more efficient in the gearing up process in order to minimize time before going PvP to Berezino.

I know, cause I play this way and won't deny it. I would play it differently if DayZ had more content and balance right here and right now, but that's just not an option. I know this, since I don't play Project Zomboid multipayer the same way I play DayZ. It is only natural that a player chooses the most fun aspects the game can provide and right now DayZ can offer only this. After each update with content the cycle repeats - you search for new stuff, test it, then go gear up, learning new power-gaming techniques in the process, and kill some people.

That's why people are doing what they are doing in the game and why they are writing about it. It may change after the game is completed, or may not.

P.S. Don't berate me for my play style, I take the game I play at face value and don't try to make into something that it's not by RP, headcanoning or some other artificial means. If the game is immersive and pushes me to play it in a more elaborate way, then it's the game's design that should be commended, not my ability to play. Same case for when it's not.

Aside from server hopping there is nothing wrong with power-gaming. If there is any knowledge you can use to your advantage its fair game. And even server hopping is actually no different from using a massively overpowered gun thats no fun to use (and certainly no fun to play against). So its a matter of game "balance" (actually more design than real balance) - if there is a pattern people will get used to it. A more complex pattern increases the games difficulty level. Randomizing between certain patterns increases it even more while randomizing each door makes for uncertainty - however you can still watch out whether there are abnormal deviations from the distribution.

I think there should be a good mix between knowledge and uncertainty. Learning something and applying this knowledge is just as fun as having to deal with unkown circumstances. So for example I think doors should be randomized while certain loot should be more common in/exklusive to certain buildings (no AKM in residential homes or fire stations).

In the world of 1s and 0s, nothing is truly random.  Even random number generators.

That said, seems random enough to me.

From my experience it's not at all random.  Each location simply has a different 'start' point, with certain doors open, and others closed.  For that building, in that location, the doors will always start the same.  So while it's certainly an improvement over the 'all doors start closed' days, it still isn't as random as I hope it one day will be.  As for now, you simply have to learn the default door positions for various locations if you want to know whether or not someone has already been through the area.

Or you just leave the doors the way you found them and nobody moving through your wake will be the wiser... I do this at military bases to 1) cover my tracks, and 2) to slow server hoppers down.

Being truly "good" at dayz requires diligence and attention to detail. In a game where the first shot often ends the fight, taking steps to ensure you're not the one in the sights makes all the difference.

TLDR: stop leaving doors open like you were raised in a barn!

Who dafuq cares.  :|

If you cant tell whether its been looted or not at this point, why does it even matter to you?

Oh wait, thats right. Server hopping.

I hopped over 100 bunkers and not one spawned with all the doors closed. More than likely it was someone like me who came and closed them all. They are always the same doors that are open. Nutten random about it.

I repeat. Nothing random about it...

Edit: I hop to hunt server hoppers. Call me a camper if you will...

So you willingly waste your own time sort of playing this game to get yourself to a point where more traditional shooters allow you start? I find that funny.

Because it adds something different to the game. Why do some people play CoD, others BF and others a yet another different shooter? Because they all differ to a certain degree. One has good competitive action, the other enhanced squad tactics, another is e.g. in a WWII setting. This one has a fun gearing up process.

Yes, I find gearing up fun. Makes PvP kills even more rewarding.

I'm sorry, but the game does not offer much more than that at this point.

Approved by Rockett and being built fundamentally into our new central loot system. Camping fresh servers till the server restart every 30mins ins't hopping per say. That's just Alpha and Admins with 1Hr servers hell even the 4hr servers are crashing every 45mins.

Hopping would be going from server to server every 10mins at best untill I found someone to shoot. Which isn't what I'm doing.

But being a @sshole by not making a constructive comment isn't somthing I normally do..Call it what you will.
